Knife in the Hat 2 (read this to participate)

Kalindras, not a bad idea, but too much work in my opinion! No one got screwed last time. I think I ended up having to wait a really long time (couple of months) after the send date because the maker was Australian and was having some real financial troubles. He stayed in contact with me and I didn't care, so it worked out good. People were pretty lax about the reviews, though. Nothing we can do about that. So, I think if we do it like last year it'll still work.

I have a few seconds for the "send knife by" date of February 1, 2003 and no later. Another recommendation for the $150-$300 range of value. I think that's do-able, even for a hack like me. I've seen knives for ten times what I would sell one for if I were to ever sell one and they looked about the same! :D The problem with sending all the knives to one person is that I would go through them and pick out the one I like best for myself, which isn't really fair! :D Some people shipped their knives way earlier and had pictures up and stuff long before the ship date. This year I recommend:
Rather than a "ship-by" date we do a "ship on" date so everyone gets their swag about the same time (or if that date doesn't work for some reason, as close to it as possible). Also, no pictures or comments on what you're making. Total CIA-type secrecy on this. No pics, no hints, no descriptions on the forum, nothing. That way it's a complete surprise.

Keep the registrations coming and we'll get the details hashed out. And, like I said, if you're on the fence register and when we do get the deatils hashed out if you want to drop you can.

Anybody else? Come on guys, it will be fun. All of you really talented guys can just throw in one of your "rejects";)

Since it is open to non-experts I'm in...have only made knives for my own enjoyment but am game!

Just bringing this BTTT. Also, remember that this is a way to challenge yourself and get feedback on your skills from another knifemaker, as well as to have some fun. Do not get into this with the thought that you can knock out a piece of crap and, by the luck of the draw, get a really nice knife in return. If you want to do this you need to realistically be able to make a knife that would sell for the target range, which sounds like $150-$300 at this time. I've made 20 or so knives and I will be digging deep into my bag of tricks to make something appropriate (mainly because I do EVERYTHING with hand tools, so it takes FOREVER and finishing is a bitch). I've seen knives much better than anything I've made on someone's first few attempts at it, depending on their experience, but if you aren't confident that you could put your knife out at a show and get $150-$300 for it from a consumer then don't do this. It isn't fair to the other makers. Maybe someone can organize a KITH for brand new makers or something in that case. Sound good? We're going to have a big group this year, so it should be fun!

BTTT....
Couple of days left on registration. Email must be received by me by the end of October 31, 2003. Anyone after that will have to wait until next time.

Count me in. Email sent.

I like the idea of keeping it open as far as type of knife. Not everyone can make all types of knives.
$150-$300 range sounds good to me.

Hey all, 7 more build days until we have to ship, how is everybody doing? I got mine done a couple days ago, now I just need to find a box. It is always the little things.

I am getting excited to see all of the work that has been done. Can't we move up the ship date a week? :D

Ha, no we can't as I'm cutting out guards today(or maybe tomorrow) :)

Am looking forward to this though.

Mine's done. Tess is just finishing up the sheath. I tried something a bit different. Hope you like it Dan!
:)

It's sheath makin day!

Finished my knife yesterday and am going to work on the sheath today. Hope to be done everything by tomorrow.

I've really been tempted to post a pic of the knife but will wait. This knife is a new variation on a recent design, I think it worked out pretty well.

I just need to put the final edge on it and it will be done. Any ideas on how much longer I should alow for shipping to Canada?

Tempering as I type, then a little sanding and a little sticking parts together an I'll be ready to mail it. Its even turning out pretty good for the hack that I am :D

Aw man, I;m still grinding! I put it off forever! Stupid. Still nee to finish, heat treat, finish, glue scales, finish, make sheath. Ouch.

hahaha, don't worry, I put it off too. Course, not as long as you did. ;) but still have about 45-50 hours of regular work this week to take up the time.
