Knife in the Hat 2005 Registration Thread

What the heck do you mean no pens? I already had them done and I was just waiting for this year's KITH to come around.

Pens can be weapons too, haven't you all seen the movie Casino?

Awww, screw it, I am out this year :grumpy:  :grumpy:

;) :) ;)

Yeah right, I am in, email sent. Time to get creative.

Tons. No list yet. Registration stays open until November 1, 2004. At that time a master list will be compiled, I'll reiterate the rules and regulations, probably a few people will drop out, and then we'll be all set to draw names, etc. This is defintely going to be the biggest of the 3. Some familiar names, some I've never heard of before, so should be interesting! List and group emails will roll out in November.

Looks like a great crowd this year. Should be very interesting. :D

just had a thought....how about setting a "standard" that we all could agree to. It would help some of the younger guys understand the level of expectation.

It could be something like:

1 - glue joints to be no more than 0.03" thick
2 - minimum one pin in the handle
3 - forged blades to be clean of scale
4 - soldered joints....
5 - and so on...

Somebody smarter than me could come up with something better to cover all the bases. It's kind of vague to just have people "do their best". Works better (for me, at least) to know the level of expectation I'm agreeing to do, and then rise to it.....and maybe exceed it if possible. ;)

[edited to add]

I don't see it as being harmful to new guys....it will ensure a little safeguard because anybody that can't agree to the "standard" probably won't make something that will satisfy another knifemaker.

I should also add that I see myself as being near the bottom of this list and while I will certainly do my best, it probably is going to require a good sense of humor, patience and above all, tolerance, on the receiver's end. :D

Dan,, you could throw a cat through that

do you mean 3 thousands .003 :D

I think we have good people in here and everyone will try their best to get a good knife out there and I don't think we should set rules for how the knives are made and crush any creativity. Plus, some great knifemaker's don't solder, may use one pin on a hidden tang, etc.

see.....already found somebody smarter than me....didn't take long....:D

Forget rules and requirements. If all knives were made to a set standard they would get pretty dull. When it comes to creative talent ,the only rules you should follow are the ones you set for yourself.( By your rules I couldn't make that quillion dagger I was planning on doing,no pins or solder at all,oh well I'll just make something else if I draw your name! )

I can't help it that my ass is a Harvard graduate. :D

ahh yes Haaahvarahed.. did the rest of you go to the other one that makes paddle-locks
rrrr Yale :D :D

I don't think they meant you HAD to use solder, but if you made a knife where soldering would be important that it SHOULD be soldered. Instead of duct taping a guard on, for example. I say no rules. Throw caution to the wind and all that! ;)

I think the best rule is the Golden Rule in this case ("If I just made a great knife for someone else and mailed it to them, and this is the one I received from someone else, would I be happy or pissed?")

Nov 1 is when the list is closed. I may have messed it, but when is the knife due??
