Knife Joy Slysz Bowie Second Run Coming!

Spyderco returned my call today about the KJ 2nd gen. Slysz Bowie pivot. The gentleman was very brusque... And almost seemed annoyed with me? I was a little bewildered as I thought the message I had left was very respectful.

First he informed me that he didn't think there had been any changes to the pivot of KnifeJoy exclusive Slysz Bowie 1st gen and 2nd gen release. I informed him that I had both a 1st gen release, and a 2nd gen release both on hand and that the pivot seemed to be much more shallow on the second gen (which others have also reported), and that there are also reports of red/permeant loctite being used. Then he questioned me about why I, or anyone else would want to take the knife apart to begin with. I let him know I like to replace the lube with KPL.

In the end he told me to send the knife in. I asked specifically if the pivot could be removed and replaced with a new one and was told yes... So it sounds like they can help. I'm glad I won't have to resort to destructive means and replacing the pivot.

When I got off the phone I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy, so I measured the pivot depth of both knives with a set of Mitutoyo calipers. On the 1st gen. KJ release I get a repeatable depth of .235". On the 2nd gen. KJ release I get a repeatable depth of .017".

I think this video shows off the issue much better though. The first bit is a Wiha T8 Torx. The second bit is a higher end, PB Swiss T8 Torx. The first gen is on the left, and the second gen is on the right.

It definitely is shallow. I had to use the "shock" method to the break the loctite free (I put the bit in the pivot and gave it some firm whacks with a hammer until I was able to unscrew it).

If I had known they had used red loctite, I would have done the same. :(

My Slysz Bowie from the previous drop didn't have the permanent loctite and came apart very easily, so I was expecting that. Then, because of the shallow pivot, I ended up partially stripping it. :(

I could probably get it myself if I really worked at it, but on a knife priced like this, I'd rather Spyderco just handle it. I'm glad they were willing to help.

I scored one of these on the forum and it seems to be an excellent knife.
If I wanted to change the pocket clip can other things go onto this slot?
Thanks.

Back in stock today limited quantity at knife Joy 10AM CST!

Every time they drop these I think I will grab one, but then I realize that it's not worth the money charged, to me at least. I'd also have to factor in the time to strip that blue off the scales. Hopefully there are enough for those that really want one!

I wish they'd kept the stonewashed polish blade and the stonewashed plain ti handle. The lockbar insert was a nice upgrade to give the people what they wanted, but at this time of the year any knife has a tough sell given the multiplicity of big sales and the other competitors for our dollars, e.g., financial responsibility.

Last batch of the second (gone forever afterwards) run drops @ 10am CDT May 16!

Has it only been a year since KnifeJoy initially released their blue Slysz Bowie?

Seems longer ago than that . . . 🤷
