"knife-like instruments" used by Hijackers

none of us knows what happened in the planes - on at least one it appears that the scumbags did encounter some resistance because the plane crashed w/out crashing into the whitehouse, etc - so i think some tried to do something - we are not a nation of sheeple, i promise you - this will be avenged.............

I just read this.
http://www.msnbc.com/news/627214.asp
Tom Burnett, passenger, United Flight 93, by cell phone to his wife:
"We are all going to die, but three of us are going to do something."
There were 38 passengers on board.

God Bless Them. I bet by crashing the plane, they never realized they stopped the hijackers from reaching their target and causing more harm.

Sheeple this and sheeple that. It was a tragedy and I feel really bad that so many people had to die. :(

But...

Maybe we, all of us, have seen that a hijacking can lead to more innocent deaths if one is complying with the hijackers orders. I have thought a lot about non-compliance in situations like this. I have made a decision. I hope that many more makes the same one:

I will not follow a terrorists order. I will fight them to the end. No matter what.

I think that this is the only way to make terrorism an obsolete weapon.

I'd like to clarify that I am in no way criticizing the victims of these crimes. My original comments were intended to criticize the society that fosters the attitude, "comply and it will be okay" in the face of armed intimidation. On further reflection, though, there are plenty of reasons (as have been pointed out by several posters) why those on board might have done as they were told that have nothing to do with the attitude I perceived as the problem. I would love to be wrong in my initial reaction to this -- and with any luck I am.

well - without revealing too much - it can be said that all Israeli commercial flights are protected by highly trained and armed men.

NO Israeli aircraft has ever been kidnapped. None.

Being an Israeli I can assure you that the passengers will also never give in like that - I am certain no flight with many Israelis on it would surrender like that - we are just too damn hard necked to go like that...call it national attitude -but we usually don't take sh*it from on one...not on a personal level - anyway...

I think the only real solution is having armed men and women on ALL flights - there is simply too much to risk.

It has to be said that the price of such security is very high - and maybe now people and airlines will be willing to pay it.

I know I always prefer flying El Al - the Israeli carrier - cause I KNOW how well protected the planes are.

Situations like this bring out the best and worst in us all.

Having just slept a night on this, I think I was wrong to pass judgement on Razoredge's statements. Razoredge, my apology for taking a "holier than thou" stance when in fact everyone has a right to their opinion expression on this matter.

This tradgic situation has certainly made me, for one, open my eyes to a lot of things in our country.

Professor.

Professor,

No apology is necessary, friend. My initial assessment was too easy to make after the fact, and plenty of people have brought up very valid points to the contrary. I think there's a certain amount of value to all the views expressed in this thread.

I fear that, people hate KNIFE like in Japan In U.S. too after this attack.
In Japan, this Knife hate occure after a stabbing of Asanuma Inezirou;head of opposition party.

I feel the best not to hijack is allow open carring arms. All carry handgun is great deterrent.
If stop all Mission counter terrorism or Mad Dog mirage, all passenger must not have anything;get on after shower and all HOLE check, only bathrobe.
Second best is all crewmen have shotgun.

Much of this talk is ridiculous. Not that I am criticizing any of the postings here whether they question whether those on the flight should have done something or they defend them if they did not...
The fact is that none of us were there (thank God) and none of us know what really happened on those doomed flights. The main reason I say that much of this talk is ridiculous is this: It is easy for us to make such grand comments as "why didn't they do anything" and "I would never sit and let this happen if it was me" - we didn't have to make the choice. I hate to say this because I have a great respect for the people here, your experience, knowledge and opinion, but this thread seems like the classic "If it had been me...". Give me a break all you tough guys who would have jumped the terrorists. It is big talk and much of it is BS. Easy for us to say that we would have dealt with people armed with knives - this is a Blade Forum! We KNOW about knives. Most of us are trained in how to use them and how to defend against them in some way or other. Many of us have trained in martial and various combat arts - in this case we are often not considerd the average citizen. Please, let's not talk about how we would have saved the day... As many have said here: it is likely that people had no idea that they were about to become a suicide missile, it is likely that people thought there was a bomb, it is VERY likley that people thought they would simply be taken to some foreign country like Cuba and then ransomed... It seems very clear that most of us here may have risked our own lives, but those people on the planes were not alone - there were many others aboard including women, children and elderly. I often wonder what I would/could do if someone held my little son hostage...How tough would I be then. I think it is rude and unacceptable to criticize any in this scenario. there are bigger fish to fry here: What does this mean for the face of global politics? What does it mean for the security of our families and friends if these attacks are seen by other terrorists as "successful"? What does this mean for our rights and freedoms? NONE of us are so great that we can say what we would have done - we did not have to face that terror. None of us is in the position to criticize anyone for their inaction.

Be careful we do not make enemies of ourselves - there are bigger enemies to be dealt with...

I agree, Sirius. I've lurked around in this forum for a long time, occasionally posting. My opinion is that those who know what others should have done in this crisis, or believe they know what they themselves would have done, are generally sadly mistaken. All the chest thumping and testosterone....

I know whereof I speak. I have been a hostage. I also treat victims. I also treat the chest thumping testosterone bearers, many of whom are LEOs, who run into a wall we call humanity. These are great folks, who dedicate themselves to the service and protection of others. They are highly trained, and are brave and competent. They find out that they can't ALWAYS be brave, tough, and in control. They find out that they make mistakes, and they get terrified, too. With luck, they come out of these situations even better officers than they were.

So it saddens me to see some of the posts here in which shock and anger have overshadowed compassion.

Terrorists are the equivolent of child molesters on a grand scale. This was done to destabilize our society. It has failed. I work in an office with serious politically correct overtones. We all came together yesterday like never before. White, Black, Hispanic, Asian Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Agnostic, Athiest, Gay, Straight, Bi, Democrat, Republican, Independent, Fat, Thin, whatever could possibly be an American demographic came together to support each other in this, the darkest hour in our nation's history.

We as Americans; of all different arbitrary terms of division; will fight tyrany. It is our obligation as Americans to do so.
I feel a great sense of pride in hearing of the actions of those brave souls on flight 93. We will avenge them.
I think we have reached the end of our tether.

"Cry havoc! Let slip the dogs of war!"

but, it can't be that expensive to have a couple of decently trained ar,med guards on board each flight? There seem to be plenty creeping around the airport?

Every day, there are 4000 airplanes flying commercially in the US alone. That's a lot of armed guards. Doable, but expensive. Not just in personnel, but the loss of paying passengers and more guaranteed weight per flight.

Chris

cris. Sorry to disagree, but from what I have heard, the school shootings has dropped to ZERO.

Tell me this. . . How easy would it be to hijack a plane full of armed passengers? It would be next to impossible. We've just seen that it is possible, with little frigging boxcutters, to hijack a plane full of unarmed passengers trained to comply with criminals. We make it too easy for them. Terrorism will never be eradicated completely, but more could be done. We are heading in the wrong direction by clamping down on weapons.
The statement about clamping down on weapons hit the nail on the head. This mentality of lets get more weapon control and it will solve the problems of the US is leading to the general public's inability to defend themselves, and to the "lets comply and the danger will go away", way of thinking. It is a proven fact that increased weapon controls increases violence.

While the idea of a bank vault like cockpit sounds like a great idea on the surface it has one major flaw. If there was ever a rapid depressurization in the aircraft it could result in a structural failure in the fuselage...cockpit doors are equiped with blow-out panels for just such a reason. While I didn't lose anyone in the tragedy my sympathy goes out to the many people who did.

PS: If you want to hear something erie call the ATIS information number for your local airport...it should sound something like this.."ground stop..all aircraft due to national emergency until further notice".

Ollie North just held up to the nation what he recently brought through security (On Board) even after this event. Leatherman Supertool with extended 50/50 blade. They are coming for our sharp objects. :(
