Knife lost in shipping.

I would like to state that I am in NO WAY saying that the buyer is lying or trying to pull a fast one. I looked at their reviews prior to accepting the deal. They are clearly an experienced buyer and all good transactions. I was simply asking if this had happened to anyone and what potential advice was out there. In NO WAY do I not believe the buyer, throughout this situation they have been open and helpful. If somehow my description of the issue made it appear I did not believe them, I am sorry for that.

Moving forward I will do my absolute best to secure the package and will most likely also use UPS from now on.

I appreciate the comments and will do what I can with the USPS.
Sorry to hear you're going through this. It's almost a right of passage for anyone who sells something on the web...bleh..sucks..
Ive had good luck with USPS where I am... but when i ship a knife (or something valuable) i use FEDEX Always (for a few reasons).
Eventually your stolen USPS tracking info will update as delivered - at which time you should file a claim.
Good luck

Been there, done that with USPS, every package lost was insured and never have I been paid after filing a claim. I really feel for you and suggest you set up a fedex account and ship 3 day or faster. Whenever I've had a problem with a package, I call and they're on it, even calling me back to inform me as to any updated status. And even when they had that big problem at their Memphis hub with the one week shutdown, I never lost faith that they'd get it straight - and they always have. Farewell UPSP - RIP.

Earlier this year, I had an expensive knife shipped across the country and arrive like this on our porch:

Luckily, the (excellent) BF seller had heavily wrapped and taped the knife against the inside of the package wall, and stuffed the box with sticky large bubbles, so whoever cut open the box, was not able to find out what was in there in a rush I guess, so the knife was still in there. Regarding the OP's question, once the package is marked as delivered, try the insurance. Would have been helpful to have a photo from the buyer of the package ...

Roland.
I took delivery of a Carothers last week that arrived in a USPS box cut open in that exact fashion. I too was fortunate that the knife was securely wrapped in a couple of layers of bubble wrap, which was inserted into a USPS bubble wrap envelope.

$@%$^$#@$king thieving mongrels weren't so lucky this time.

From my personal experience, using USPS is like taking an air trip. You better pray nothing goes wrong. Or, it is a total disaster.

Prior to shifting all packages to being sent to a PO Box, I would have 3 to 4 packages go missing every month due to porch pirates and mailbox shoppers. (For the last 12+ years, I have had EVERYTHING shipped to a PO Box, even UPS and FedEx).

Since the shift in delivery locations, I have had over 4000 packages delivered, with values ranging from $1 to $5K+. During that time.I have had -

- 1 package "lost" that I believe the seller never sent as I could never get a tracking number from him. Had to file a PP claim.

- 1 Barlow knife lost out of a box that got wet and the end got ripped off. Showed the damaged box to the postmaster, I sent pictures to the seller, he refunded my money and filed a claim which was paid by the USPS.

- 1 package where the dumbass seller put a 1-1/2# BSA hatchet in a flimsy hair dryer box secured with Scotch tape. Filed a claim w/PP as the seller just told me to file a claim with USPS - news flash the recipient can't file a claim.

- 1 package where the seller shipped a plastic bayonet scabbard (FN-FAL Type C) in a bag - got broken. Seller sent a second one.

- 1 package where the seller shipped a dive knive with plastic scabbard in an envelope that was broken on arrival. Crickets from the seller. 1 star reviews left.

- had a USCW-era saber go astray - showed leaving Pennsylvania, going to California and on to Hawaii and vanishing. After 25 days, lost in the system, I reported to seller. Seller refunded my money and filed a claim (full value insurance). He eventually got his money from them.

9 months or so later, I received a package at the PO that I was not expecting.

Opened the box at the PO. The missing saber has arrived. Went to the desk with a saber in open carry mode. Asked for the post master. He knew I collected sharp and pointies. Told him

"Paul, you know that saber that went missing 9 months ago?? It just arrived today after taking a little trip to Fiji?" (according to the stamps on the box.) "What do we do?"

"I see nothing. I do not see that box. I do not see that saber. I do not want to do the paperwork."

Maybe central Texas POs are just better manned.

I sold a Hinderer Fatty today and paid UPS to pack and insure blade with photos . Way too expensive for the shipping! We have to figure out how to stay ahead of any dirtball that jams up the gears of our hobby or, for some, their living!

Update:

As of now, I have been denied insurance payment from USPS. They are stating that a receipt from Paypal sales is not sufficient evidence of value. Paypal has taken the money back and charged me the fee of payment............. This is just a shit show.... So, the knife is gone, the money was taken back. The money I paid for shipping is lost, and I have a bill from paypal for the fee of a transaction that was reversed.....

I don't understand. Is there no way for you to access the original receipt/invoice from when you yourself purchased the knife??

Even if you sold the knife for more than you bought it for, some money back would be better than none.

I once had a claim denied for a similar reason. I asked a friend who was a lawyer and a knife dealer to write something official looking stating the value of the missing knife. 30 days later I got paid. Contact the maker/manufacturer and ask for something that proves the insured value. The PO counts on people just going away when they say no. Keep fighting them.

A trifecta of crap! I am reluctant to even sell anything thru P.O. I paid thru the nose to ship w/ UPS, but can’t trust USPS with $$$ items anymore. I do think that if a buyer or seller wants to jam someone up they can just mail you a rock…… this is a bummer.

can’t trust USPS with $$$ items anymore.

Sure you can. USPS Registered Mail. It’s the safest way to ship something in the U.S. (up to an insured value of $25k). Secret level classified documents are mailed this way.

It takes a bit longer, costs a bit more, and you have to deal with paper tape…. But the item will get there, every time.
