Knife modding by committee/GAW

I'm in. Voted in all categories. I'd like to see the blades cleaned up. Not that they shouldn't be allowed to patina in use, but if the rest of the knife is new, seems like the blades should get a fresh start too.

Just an FYI this is a shell construction knife meaning those aren't real bolsters.
This is a stamped metal with a thick heat shrunk plastic wrap for the scale material.
I like the way you think though.

Yeah I realized that after my post, it looks like a Hammer Brand knife I just cleaned up for a family member. In that case, a handmade set in Nickle Silver would push this little knife over the top!

I'm getting really excited about this! I've been loving the detailed breakdowns about how people are voting. Very cool! My preference is just for rugged simplicity so I usually go shadow pattern unless the handles are too nice to toss. Pretty excited about the idea of black bolsters and hardwood too - I had never even thought about the combo but I think it'd be very pretty. If that doesn't win on this knife, I'll do that before too long on something else. I do have a nice project knife in mind...

R8shell - thanks for the kind words! Is that one loosening up at all? I had to go pretty snug with the pivot pin due to it being copper - the material seemed really stretchy.

My preference would be able to retain the bolsters [or cut my own] and do brass liners but I've been horribly frustrated working with brass and n/s on the equipment I have. Built in bolsters and liners are doable, but full on DIY is beyond me for now. Here are a little Schrade and a Boker Congress with two blades removed that I re-worked the factory parts on...

NO WAY!!!! Never say never, you could do it. Grab some nickle silver online, could potentially even find it the perfect thickness and shape it when your doing the micarta scales. Would be amazing and you already have pins for each end to help keep it together. I enoy doing brass guards on some of the fixed blades I make and its nerve wracking for sure but when it goes from nasty chunk of ugly metal to polished amazingness...its extremely satisfying!!!

Super cool idea for a thread! I need to get myself some basic equipment and start doing mods myself, threads like these are such good motivation. Not an entry!

My vote is
Both blades
Patina
Long bolster of natural canvas
Yellow liners
Green canvas covers
Copper pins (although brass is good too)
No pin covers

Thanks for the chance. I'm looking forward to seeing the process. :)

Good luck to all who enter. :)

I'm in. Thanks. I voted, but I don't feel that strongly about it. My only concern is that a combination will be voted for that isn't ideal, so I'd say use the poll as a guide and do what you want.

Thanks for the encouragement! I've got some SAK liners traced out a big slab of copper and I'm about ready to start cutting. I think I'll get to the point where I feel confident in working in it, NS and brass. I've actually done some work with Ti in the past and, despite being hard on tools it came out OK. I'm just not quite confident enough in time for this GAW ;)

I'm in, because this is cool. But mostly, I'm just excited to see what you do.

Is there a thread for your mods, like we have one for @Jfowl31 ?

No, I don't think I'll do one. It seems like he's interested in doing work for other people ~ I know I completely lack the followthrough to do that. I'd be one of those guys who eventually gets chased off the forum with people's knives and money in hand. Just keepin' it small and simple :D

Yeah, I've worried about that. Especially with the option to re-use the stock liners. In my past experience, the liners on these shell knives have notches cut in the ends and tend to be in pretty ugly shape. If that wins, I may need to do something that will make 66sprint6 66sprint6 happy... and we don't want that!

Well, what you lack in follow-through, you make up in marketing - now I definitely want one because I can't have one :):D:rolleyes:

Im in. I voted for natural canvas, black liners, brass pins, patina, and birdseye. Really cool give away.

I voted, and it looks like most of my choices are not very popular, but I feel like I would be a fool not to get in on this anyway. I am in. I can't wait to see the WIP and see what a committee designed mod will look like.

I'm in!

I debated hopping on this one but the chance of getting a one of a kind knife with great old carbon steel was too great to resist.
I just voted and regardless of what happens I can't wait to see it !

Hey! Guess what showed up in the mail box today!

Really pleased with this guy as is for $3.59. I think it's gonna be a really nice candidate for modding too. Looking like natural micarta on natural micarta? Very... uh, interesting. I may have to exercise executive privilege on that combo if it wins

Looks like an awesome candidate for a new lease on life! Cant wait to see what you end up doin with it!!!

You can always take the 2nd most popular choices where the 1st make for an ugly combo. It is hard to believe a knife can cost so little!
