Knife myths

how ab ought "that knife is illegal because it's _____ long". Most people through out numbers they just pulled out of a hat with out ever looking at the penal code.

My favorite "myth" is that a "good working edge" which won't shave arm hair or cut paper is superior to a "flimsy razor sharp edge.":jerkit:

I like "razor sharp.":D

That's a good one. Or how about if you make your edge razor sharp that it will dull and roll and be all out of shape after cutting a foot of cardboard. Sometimes I wonder if people trumpeting the thick, "working edges" have ever even used a knife ground at under 15 degrees per side (Which is still way too obtuse for me).

With a thicker edge, if you want to peel carrots or whittle wood, you have to angle your knife and arm away from what you're cutting. How does that make things easier or more comfortable? also, wouldn't a thinner edge be less likely to take damage since you're using less force in general to make cuts? It would also help you not cut yourself. But I guess some people will never see the light. :D

Serrated knives are weapons.

Blades over two inches are unnecessary.

People who buy none traditional knives are mall ninjas! (this myth is both within and outside of the knife world)

Small knives are made for women only.

Knives over thirty dollars are marketing ploys. They all cut the same.

All you need is one knife...(for all task) if it is a good one.

Switchblades or automatics are more deadly than a kitchen knife or slip joint.

Knives deemed illegal are more dangerous than knives deemed legal to own.

GREAT thread! I have heard almost all of these myself...I got another one...This one really bugs me!

"in our day an age there is NO reason for anyone to have to carry a knife around"

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I use my knives almost every single day! I would be lost without it! Im sure many of you feel the same way...Here is one I heard 2 tiems from 2 different people which made me laugh both tiems, lol...

"My knife is really nice, its made of german steel rostfrei...I got a good deal on it to $7...Its just as nice as yours"

the 2 times I heard this each person said it a little differently but they meant the same thing...I just laughed and told them to go check out knifeforums.com and bladeforums.com...I didn't spend the time to explain anythgin to these people, the kind of guys who say this and own $7 knives wouldn't agree with anything I was about to say anyway...too thick headed, and stuborn...

Out of habit I alway tie my bags when purchasing anything at the "sporting goods" section of wally world with my receipt inside. On the out through the garden section the older gentleman who was checking the bags asked for the receipt. I pulled out my folder and cut the bag.

"Man, that's as illegal as carrying a gun!"

"That's okay, I got one of them too!"

my least favorite comment is " what do you use a knife like that for". That questions drives me nuts, the guy just asked me to borrow it then asked that question.

The worst myth:

People who carry knives are more violent or more likely to be criminals than those who don't.

The truth:

A gentleman is not fully dressed unless he has a knife!

Them Opinels are just junk!

Scary sharp after a couple o' swipes on a smooth steel makes 'em worthy in my book. Like the patina, the light carry, the great design.....hell, they're just a great usin' everyday knife that I never have any qualms about usin' to the point of abuse. They beat the crap out of many folders that cost four and five tilmes and mebbe' more each and everyday.

Ever see one with a "wobbly" blade?....I kinda' doubt it, mebbe too tight, but never "wobbly".

good ones guys, I have heard them all...its amazing how uneducated people are about things like knives...I mean I can understand some people not liking them , but don't comment on something you don't know about...you know...but people do that with all kinds of crap nayway but when they do it about knives people like us get extra annoyed...

You know what I hate...In most palces bigger fixed blades are ok "if you have a reason to use them" like say huntign or somethgin, how about I would like to have the right tool for the right job if the occasion pops up...good to be prepared you know, just in case...and who gets the right to say if your reason for having a big knife is good enough or not? The whole knife in society problem thign is too much...I wish I lived way they heck out in the middle of nowhere so no one cared...I live in the suburbs, I can't imagine how you city guys take it...must be worse for you guys than for most of us in the middle of the country and city...

"in our day an age there is NO reason for anyone to have to carry a knife around"

That one drives me up the wall!:grumpy: I'm an archivist and historian, and I work around musty old books, documents, and magnetic computer tapes. Yet my Benchmade 710 D2 gets used several times every day!:p

Not so much a myth as an attitude, but people who show off their dull, mistreated high-end knives with pride.

"Of course I never sharpen it, it's made in GERMANY!!!"

Yeah, those Black Forest magical dwarves make never-sharpen knives.

"If the blade is longer then your palm its illegal"
:jerkit: This one is probably my least favorite to hear! I try hard to be polite in most situations (in general), but with this one, I just have to look at them in a puzzled manner and ask, "Where did you hear that?"

"My knife is really nice, its made of german steel rostfrei...I got a good deal on it to $7...Its just as nice as yours"

I always have a hard time with this one. Like I said, I try hard to be polite. I don't have any real need to prove that my knife is "better" than their flea market special, but still, this would be like me telling some guy with a Mercedes that my beat-up 1989 Toyota is "just as nice as yours". (In defense of my Toyota, it's paid for, and it runs and runs.)

What would be my motivation to say this to him? Am I jealous? Am I stupid? Thinking about it, I suppose both the cheap knife guy or I (Toyota guy):
  • am being defensive of a tool (car or knife) that is adequate for my very undemanding needs, and
  • am probably pretty ignorant of a real quality luxury good, or
  • am jealous.

But the point is, I suppose, that I wouldn't tell a Mercedes guy that my old Toyota is "just as nice as yours."

Great thread!
