Knife myths

A Swiss Army Knife is just a toy.

thats a good one, I never heard this myself, but heard of people saying they hear that alot...About people saying they are gadgets that don't work...or that they are cheap, and not well made...:jerkit: There are thousands of SAK fans that would love to argue with that statement...

I'm sure the hobbyists and the full time makers have heard this line from many a jackass visiting their table:

"Hey man, how much for that knife right there?"

"Oh, the hand forged hunter with a presentation desert ironwood handle? Well sir, I'll let that one go for $180."

"A HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS?! I CAN GET A KNIFE AT WALMART JUST AS GOOD AS THAT FOR 20!

:jerkit:

You guys already covered the "omg dont sharpen teh knives, sharp knives are more dangerous" thing.

and the "It says ROSTFREI on the blade, so that means it's rare/expensive/old etc."

and that "ORIGINAL BOWIE KNIFE" on the blade must mean exactly that.

"That's a good knife...it's made with surgical steel...."

"omg...you make/collect knives? What are ya some kind of psycho killer?"

And every large hunting knife of ANY style or brand is referred to as a "Buck" knife.

And every knife no matter what....with a sheath/pouch is called a "Case" knife.

oh....and where people see OTF switchblades and say automatically "Them knives work by pushing it up to someone, then pushing the button and it shoots out and stabs them huh huh..."

I think this is one myth better to let them hold on to.. at least it's the only one that doesn't come after a gasp ;)

The one I hear the most is that "A blade longer than the width of a palm is illegal" My reaction is always "Who's palm?"

I think most of my pet peeves have been covered.

How about people who refer to a "fuller" as a "blood groove"?

The NYC flick open rule..
my personal favorite, calling any folder a switchblade

my dad loves to pester me with, "carry a butter knife instead, so when you stab someone, you won't get in trouble"

A lot of people think Rostfrei and Inox and Solingen are knife manufacturers -- even some of the members here....

Aside from confusing those words with brands, a very common myth is the idea that the brand on a knife indicates what company manufactured it. Sometimes it does, usually it doesn't.

A friend recently showed me a smallish modern looking folding knife (2" blade) with the words "CHINA" on one side of the blade and "stainless" on the other. Badly roll stamped, not even straight. He said "Pretty nice knife Huh?" "I had to pay $20 for it but I thought it was worth it." What do I say? It was not sharp enough to cut anything and the finish was rediculous. I think it was suposed to be a locking knife but it did not lock. My relatives hate the "Damn" knives I give them because they are too sharp! They keep cutting themselves. I have stopped giving knives away.

Once I was at a swapmeet and one table had some really ugly looking buck 110 clones. I opened it up and saw that it was manufactured in India. The guy then went on to tell me that this was a much better knife then one made in China or Japan.
The reason was that the knife from india was made of steel that was made form ore, the ones from China and Japan were made from melted down recycled steel and everyone knows that this type of steel just isn't as good.

I don't know if the guy was a $hit artist or if he really believed it

I think your subject should be " What is the most shocking comments from a non knife-nut"

For knife myths, or legends, I've heard of some.
1) Treat all knives(eg. swords..) with highest respect. They are powerful and there's a "spiritual(mystical) force" guarding it. If you respect it, it will respect you.
2) All knives are more than just 'metal'.You can't just throw it in thrash when it's old/worn out. One need to bury it safely.
3) Once the blade tasted blood, it yearns for more.
4) A dominate knife or sword controls the mind of the weak( often the carrier).
5) In some culture, a spell or curse will be casted during sword-making. Humans are often the weakest being, do you think one could acheive great success by just relying on brute force?

Great thread.
A guy who came to me once was very puzzled to hear that the Spyderco 204 sharpmaker is good for serrations. And this because: "a serrated edge doesn't need to be resharpened" (because it never gets dull, you see)
Later on, I found that the everlasting serrations myth is pretty common.

... Once the blade tasted blood, it yearns for more.

So that's why some mornings Jeremiah has blood stains on it. It shouldn't have stains, but it does. I think Jeremiah is a vampyre and in full moon nights it rises and flees away instead of staying under my pillow, where Santa taught me to keep it. Jeremiah is my friend, the axe.

This post is made of pure METAL. \m/

Where are these from? I've seen some of them in anime and fantasy books (applied to swords) but not all of them together.

I think the myth that ticks me off the most, is that any knife not specifically designed, advertised and sold for food preparation must automatically be designed for violence, illegal activity or gang activity.

I used to explain that a 16 year old could purchase a cheap stainless steel knife from a department store or the local markets if their aim was merely to possess something capable of inflicting harm on another person, as opposed to coming into the small shop i work at, where we get to know the customer, always ask for ID and have video surveillance. These days i tend to walk away, really it is not worth my time.

Isn't it amazing how ignorant and brainwashed people are? Great thread!
I really like to comment about "at least I'm not brainwashed into fearing an inanimate object." I'll have to remember that one.

Most people are like that about everything; an absolute lack of curiosity about history or the process by which things work. They will sit there and suck up dribble such as "Reality TV" or "American Idol" like so many zombies.

hint: most of them still believe in department store "Sales"; even, the ones who purchased the same item at a lower regular price just the day before.
