Knife myths

A tanto point is Japanese, and is designed to penetrate body armor.

A 3" bladed knife (BRKT Journeyman) is a gigantic knife with no practical purpose (from a co-worker that has a 7" chef knife sitting on her desk).

Glass cutting boards are better for knives.

FBs are more dangerous than folders.

"The 3 piece boxite scaled BAJK is the best knife in the world" - in spite of the fact that the springs are so hard you break a nail getting the blade out and when do the closed can opener blade has an exposed point that cuts your palm. Why? "Well Sir they're made to militaary specification" Haha! It's not as if Sheffield makers don't produce some of the world's best knives. They certainly do, but this one is a horror.

A knife with a black coated blade and/or serrations is absolutely a weapon.
"Why do you carry that thing on you? Are you some kind of war junkie?" :barf:

My favourite one is the myth about knives being mostly weapons instead of tools, and even as weapons ineffective and dangerous to the user.

I don't think I need to tell any of you guys just how useful a good knife is as a tool! :) There might be some people here that consider knives ineffective and dangerous to the user as weapons, but hey, that's life. One needs to be able to look outside the box.

The following has happened to me more htan once, but the best was....

I was in a county chancery clerk's office researching and copying deeds. The copier ran out of paper. I brought in a box of paper for a lady who worked for the county, pulled out my Chive, and cut the plastic straps on the box.

She said (jokingly), "Oooooh, you have a weapon in a courthouse!"

I responded, "It's not a weapon. It's a small cutting utensil."

My favorite is when somebody says "oh, I have a knife just like that" (Manix) and the next day they show me a CCC that looks nothing like it.

The worst myth:

People who carry knives are more violent or more likely to be criminals than those who don't.

The truth:

A gentleman is not fully dressed unless he has a knife!

M.

Another: Young males (especially ethnic) are most likely to use knives violently.

The truth from DOJ statistics on violent crime: Desperate housewives armed with kitchen cutlery comprise 70% of the reports. Gangbangers come in a distant second - using firearms.

The comment about an office worker who had a 7" inch blade on her desk while dissing her male colleagues pocket folder is commonplace these days - they don't see themselves as the issue. They are just asserting themselves in a domestic dispute, not brandishing a deadly weapon.

Of course, the responding officers see it differently . . .

I think your subject should be " What is the most shocking comments from a non knife-nut"

For knife myths, or legends, I've heard of some.
1) Treat all knives(eg. swords..) with highest respect. They are powerful and there's a "spiritual(mystical) force" guarding it. If you respect it, it will respect you.
2) All knives are more than just 'metal'.You can't just throw it in thrash when it's old/worn out. One need to bury it safely.
3) Once the blade tasted blood, it yearns for more.
4) A dominate knife or sword controls the mind of the weak( often the carrier).
5) In some culture, a spell or curse will be casted during sword-making. Humans are often the weakest being, do you think one could acheive great success by just relying on brute force?

Just my $0.0002
what kinda freaks do you associate with?

I was talking about the American tanto point. If you look up a Japanese tanto, you will notice it is a short sword/large knife that has a non-geometric looking tip.
People seem to insist that American tantos are a Japanese design. They are not.

Just for the record,
The comment about an office worker who had a 7" inch blade on her desk while dissing her male colleagues pocket folder is commonplace these days - they don't see themselves as the issue. They are just asserting themselves in a domestic dispute, not brandishing a deadly weapon.
it isn't a folder. :)

I have another co-worker that has some knock-off brand uber hunting folder (gut hook and all) and she has never commented to him. I think it was seeing me using a FB... <shrug> or that I am 25 and AWB, and he is 40-ish and Chinese.

"when I remove the blade that I keep in my boot from its sheath I cannot return it until it has spilt blooood"

Not2sharp: you're exactly right. It's staggering how much dependence and ignorance modern society has. It truly is the MTV culture. If it's on TV we must believe it and obey it. It's really frightening the amount of control our media has over the thought processes of society. The exception, of course, being those who refuse to accept everything read, seen, or heard as gospel and who find answers for themselves.

I worked in an office full of women. One day a large package came in and as the secretaries poked at it with aluminum scissors, I dug down into my pocket and produced a Cold Steel Voyager with 3-inch blade and easily opened the package, slicing through the cardboard and tape. The secretaries all thanked me and I went back to my office.

That afternoon the boss asked me to see her in her office. Expecting another assignment of some sort, I was surprised to hear that my 3-inch knife had frightened the ladies and she asked me to please not carry it. Well, the official limit was: 2 3/4-inch blade allowed; longer blades not allowed.

I showed her the knife and told her it was within the limits (well, sort of) and that it was allowed (I didn't show her the 4-inch serrated Night Force I had in my other pocket). She again repeated her request and told me I didn't need a knife in my job, so I said, yeah, no problem, blah, blah, blah. Well, the next day she handed me a memo recounting our conversation and her request that I not bring a knife to work.

Well, legally she couldn't do that. Second, how did she know what I, a guy, "needed" or didn't need. Did they "need" lipstick, cigarettes, or nail files? The line between NEED and WANT is admittedly a fine one, but since I was within my legal limit (sort of) of 2 3/4-inches, I kept carrying it. Oh, and I also brought in my 6-inch Voyager, my 5-inch Gunsite tanto, and my 4-inch Voyager serrated, all on different days. But they never knew.

I also carry my 3-inch Voyager at times along with my 4-inch Voyager, which I keep in my back pocket. About a year before my story above, I used my 4-incher at a government installation. Someone snitched there, too, and I had a security guy pull me aside later and he said someone had reported that I had a BIG knife on me and that there was a 3-inch limit. He asked to see it and I let out a big sigh and pulled out the 3-inch Voyager. He looked at it and it, too, had a black handle and a serrated blade. He handed it back and apologized. I laughed and said, "Well, some people think knives are larger than they really are!" (I'm glad he didn't search me and find the 4-incher, but hey, who in his right mind would carry more than one knife, eh??)

Thats messed up...This is not knife related but my father got his Job where he works now almost 14 years ago, about the 1st week he was there his boss saw that he had tattoos...He didnt know this when he hired him, but it was a hot day and my dad wore a short sleeve shirt to work, he works in a warehouse....he runs the whole show there, its a small buisness privatly owned, but makes millions on gauges and industrial valves...anyway, when he saw my dads tattoos he called him in his office...He 1st asked my dad if he smoked pot? Then he asked him if he was in the black panthers gang? LOL, because my father has a panther tattoo on the inside of his forarm...My father laughed at 1st and had to explain to him that 1st of all not everyone with tattos smokes pot or does other drugs...and second that the black panthers is a black group, my family is white...lol, but later that ngiht he got upset thinking about it...I mean how badly judged he was because of a few tattoos...People are messed up, and stereotypes are bad news these days...they cause all kind of unnecessary trouble...

My father is a blue collar hard workign guy, and he feels his boss looks down on him some times...Im talking about a guy who goes to his compnay for 3 days to check on thigns then takes 3 weeks vacation to some island...this is a guy who drinks $130 wine daily...just to give you an idea of how loaded this guy is, his wife bought a papertowel holder for the office kitchen that cost $285 and was made out of silver! But it was like no nig deal///so to say the least his boss really annoys him sometiems...but he has been there a logn time and things have gotten better, but he is still the only real worker their, its just him doing all the real work, and about 5 salesman who make a few calls, and play card games on the computer all day...

Myths

Non locking folders (slipjoints) are safer then locking knives. (lol digit insurance pls)

A knife with an edge shorter than 3 inchs is considered less sharp.

Large knives are only used by rambo or to fight dinosaurs/zombies. (3 inch blades are suitable for everything including martian disposal and rapscallion frightening!)

mechanical opening knives are a "spec ops" weapon. (not a knife that just happens to be opened easier and faster)

Butterfly knives are weapons (because many users end up harming themselves playing with them)

Carrying a Knife is premditated murder. (Hello Mr Apple, say hello to my little friend!)

Mostly at gun shows. The lady with the customer will many times say " I hate, am afraid, don't have any, don't see the need for a knife" You add your own experience here. I then ask. Do you cook. Oh yes they will say. How do you cook without a knife? Oh. Thats different they will say. They are just kitchen knives! Another, only knives that will rust will hold an edge. A knife won't hold an edge until you leave it out in the weather and let it rust, or stick it into a potato to get it dark. Then it will hold an edge much better. I've heard a million of 'em. and my favorites, isn't that illegal, regardless of what it is. And "ALL" Ivory is illegal. Has been for a Year or two. Mike

Matte black blade color and black G-10 scales makes knife more dangerous and effective for deanimation purposes.

If you give someone a knife as a gift, they should give you a penny or that knife may cut your friendship.
