Knife Pet Peeves

For folders:
- blade wiggle when locked open
- bad centering when closed
- weak detent (safety issue)
- assisted opening

For fixed blades:
- when the synthetic sheath dulls muh edge. Hate that
- small handles that not even a toddler can grip
- JIMPING EVERYWHERE
- FINGER GROOVES EVERYWHERE
- scales that are too smooth

Black coatings that won’t stand up to the test of time and use

Dull blades in any price range
Yup.
"Drop shutty".
I hate hearing that too haha. Been watching some shot show videos of new knives coming out and hearing the presenters talk about how a knife will be a good knife because it's an excellent fidget device kinda makes me feel embarrassed for them.

Yes. If you had a mud flap girl hanging from another mud flap or in a place that mud flaps shouldn't be... then yes. 😁

I have held knives that have jimping in some useless places for no reason and jimping that is so rough they might as well be serrations or a saw back.
The ol' aesthetics vs. utility debate... a long and storied one.
I definitely knew what you meant, but I couldn't resist the urge to make a joke.

Sharpened edge or point too close to scale edge when knife is closed - I've noticed this on some very expensive knives and it really bugs me. When a knife is closed, neither the point nor sharpened edge should be easy to touch. If I miss the flipper tab for some reason, my finger shouldn't run into the heel of the blade. If I squeeze a hand past my knife in pocket, or somehow fumble my grip a little in picking up or otherwise handling my closed knife, there should be zero chance of me bleeding. Seriously, this isn't hard to figure out. Most of my collection manages to space everything with a margin of safety.

I once returned a custom knife because of this. The clip point actually stuck out past the scale a hair and it sliced the s#!t out of my thumb. I left the blood on it.

Lanyard hole prioritized over clip placement - It isn't just that I don't care about lanyards on modern folders. There are better ways to do this, such as having a pin between the scales and protected from the blade by a back spacer.

Exactly. The layard makes it easy to pull the knife out of your pocket. Too many makers think that it is unnecessary, or that just drilling a hole anywhere solves the problem.

Honestly, I wouldn't really say I have many "peeves" these days, because I only tend to buy knives that speak to me, and as I get older, I've found that pretty much every old rule I'd had (and stated in past threads like this) has been broken whenever I see a knife I just like, you know? I have locks, steels, designs, blade shapes, makers, countries of origin, designers, etc. that I don't like....and yet I own knives that I enjoy with one or more of those "violations" present.

So, yeah. 🤷

The knife in that picture looks like it will catch pocket lint which could prevent it from opening completely. That is also a pet peeve of mine.

I have always struggled with the "Spydie Flip". I have had carpel tunnel surgery and can't do it smoothly no matter how hard I try. For that reason I avoid knives with big thumbholes in the blade. Drives me crazy. I'm more angry at myself then the knives, but its a peeve for sure.

Action that’s too stiff. I have an OTF and a couple of flippers that the action is so stiff I just don’t use them - especially the OTF. They’re otherwise nice knives with good steel and hardware; but the whole point to me of OTF’s and flippers is quick and easy deployment … and maybe some fidgeting fun. If the action isn’t easy to operate, that kind of negates both of those.

As for blade shapes, handle shapes, opening and locking mechanisms, I have my preferences, but I really can’t call stuff outside of those preferences ‘peeves’. Everybody has different stuff they do and don’t like, and that’s where those design-related aspects fall for me. Example, I don’t care much for thumb holes, but obviously a LOT of other owners and users love them, so I tend to call it a not-for-me rather than a peeve.

Oh one more: the new trend of mini Bowie style blades in folders and OTFs… just not my cup of tea
