I need some advice. While traveling from JFK airport to Europe last week , a Spyderco knife was stolen from one my checked bags. Not only was a knife stolen, but the combination of the TSA approved lock on the bag in question was changed. I was lucky because in my other checked bag I had a Leatherman Wave and was able to cut off the lock with pliers.

My question is, should I file a complaint with the TSA, or will I just be creating trouble for myself when I travel next year?

Any advice will be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice. But I'm worried that I might end up on some list for possible
retribution.

There's no "payback" list. File a complaint, you'll probably get nothing out of it but you may reinforce an issue in a particular airport that is rearing it's ugly head within the TSA.

Best case you get your knife or money back. Worst case, you waste a few minutes of your time.

Thanks, I'm considering my options.

I'd file a complaint. Even if you don't get your knife back, it may at least alert them to be on the lookout for a thief among the ranks. It may save some other poor soul the grief you've suffered.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I don't expect to ever get the knife back or any money to compensate me. Just like DoctaD and others have stated, I think the TSA should be aware that they have a thief in their ranks at JFK airport.

Thanks guys.

Fuck it, make some noise.

File a complaint. Follow it up. Demand (politely) to speak with supervisors when you are stonewalled. Document the steps you take, people you talk to, all communication, etc. Send it to your congressman. Senators. Media. Lobbying groups.

Make a big deal about it, because it is a big deal. Only a knife, but it's one instance of a bigger problem. These things don't get solved unless people make noise.

I know its gonna sound like a cliché but you might call your congressman…I mean it is an election year…

I would also see about filling a police report. I read that often times outside agencies are not informed and so have know clue of the issue and it is not in TSA best interest to inform an outside agency of the problem.

But I'm worried

Don't be a 'fraidy cat. :) Make others afraid of you.

I like the idea of getting the police involved too. Even if you get no love from it, enough complaints may result in some action. You never know.

I consider myself VERY lucky to have never had anything go missing during travel but stories like this make me want to pack a POed Pitbull in my luggage. "Can you ID the thief sir?" "Yes he is the guy severly bleeding and missing a hand" :D

They can't make a case against a stealing employee if nobody ever files reports.

Make a record of it, even if you don't get the knife or money back, it may help them find who's doing it.

I lost a Benchmade the same way back before 911. I now pack cheaper Smith & Wesson knives when I go on a trip.

LOL, This seems to be the only way to protect our valuables from these thieves.

Thanks, Bill

I would like to thank EVERYONE for their great advice. I am going to file a complaint with the TSA and also complain to my Congressional representatives. The problem is that both my Congresswoman and my Senator are rabidly anti-gun, anti-knife and just plain anti-selfdefense. I don't expect too much from them, but I at least expect some kind of response from the TSA.

Once again, Thank you all.
