Knife sheath survival kit

Greetings,

I'll play. While I do believe in redundancy/having backups in your gear (ie, BIC lighters are so cheap, why not spread a few throughout your gear...pocket, back, sheath...I generally do), I am also a believer in having a few essential items in your sheath pocket that are 'always' there. If you keep your knife securely on your belt, the likelihood of sheath (at least) going astray is pretty small unless YOU take it off and leave it somewhere. And there are short occasions that maybe don't call for much of a bag or other gear (day hikes). It's nice to have a basic 'get through the night kit' if needed. I also like the idea of an 'emergency' situation where perhaps you don't have time to grab a lot of items...maybe just a few...this is 'always' ready...grab & go as it were.

Just my thoughts...YMMV.

My knife kits have fire starting and water purification supplies. I also carry back up lighters, a SAK etc. in jacket pockets. The longer the trip or more remote the location, the more elaborate it all becomes. But I learned the hard way to have back ups. We get tired, forget and leave things behind etc. Forget one of one and you have nothing. Forget one of two or three, and you are still ok......Just have back ups.

I'm making another one along those lines now (bigger knife, smaller knife, sharpener, fire steel and Altoids tin pouch as a drop loop)

Since this thread has been resurrected, I will ask- Rock6- who made your sheaths? They are perfect to me! I like the idea of having a DC3/4 and a firesteel on a leather sheath for my knives, and I don't trust my skills enough to make my own yet.

Also, elof, looking good man!

On my ESEE-4 i carry a pouch with a tin that contains simple firekit: Lighter, tindertabs, inner tube and a fero rod+striker. That is as much i would want to carry on my belt, for the F1 i will not fix anything to the sheath, just stick the altoids tin in a pocket. I very much prefer to keep it simple and low profile.

Just realized my new Lundhags trousers has a small mesh pocket inside the right cargo pocket. The altoids tin fits in there like a glove.

My kit:

ESEE/RAT Survival card in the bottom
Big lighter
Going gear Mish rod
7 Dutch army issue fuel tabs
Inner tube
Going gear striker
Emergency whistle
Tinder tabs
Ranger bands keeping the tin closed.

Hey elof, if you got really creative, you could even put the small knife on back ;) :D

I think 'bulky' is relative due to how much crap you've got to carry. Some of the stuff I do requires a good bit of equipment so I like sheath kits. Grab it and go! Here's one I use all the time

And one in leather

I stuck this little gadget onto a strap on my new sheath. It has a compass, light, and ferry rod.

I don't know the actual sheath maker for Martin Knives, but they do have his contact info...

The stuff the 710 makes looks so nice! ^ Did he do the whole setup?

He did, and I got it just a couple of days after ordering too. Kydex sheath with strap/loop setup so it can be carried vertically or you can remove the loop part and carry it horizontally. Very nice. He could be charging more $ than he does.

Thanks man. I've got to hit him up for something before long.

what brand is the firesteel? Looks sleek.

I don't disagree with the idea of having things in or attached to the knife sheath, but I change knives often. That's why I attach a pouch to my belt that keeps all the "stuff" in it. Then I just grab whichever knife I want for the trip.

BTW, there's a small knife of some sort in each pouch.

It's an exotac firerod. I like it on sheath setups because the cap is o-ring sealed, and has a little bit of storage area, just enough for about half a jelly cottonball.

Checked it out, looks really cool. It seems though that the container works more for a good grip than storing stuff.

A firesteel, because I use the spine of my knife as a striker.

All the other doodads are in my pack.
