Knife storage, what do you guys use?

The knife tree works pretty good!

I have most of my collection in a gun safe and 2 machinist chests, the same Costco & Harbor Freight ones previously referenced in this thread. The machinist chests contain only traditional knives while the safe contains a variety of boxed knives, padded taco cases, Spyderpacs and Sack Up knife rolls. I hung an open Spyderpac inside an armoire that holds some users in rotation and is concealed by clothes. I use a Pelican case with a cable lock secured to the seat of my truck when traveling. I also have another vintage machinist chest and a vintage desk top 12 drawer card file that I plan to restore and use for knives.

I've got a few Gerstner machinist chests (not Gerstner international).. a couple of 52 journeymans from the 70s/80s and a nice older one from the 40s.

also have a really old Union

lately, I've been getting into roll top desks

The foam insert has small cut-outs so you can 'design' the foam to fit anything.
You just pull out the parts you don't want and leave in the parts you want to keep.

Im pretty sure its on all pelican boxes.
And the foam is fairly cheap to replace, about $20 bucks.

Look for models advertising "pick-n-pluck" foam.
The one problem with storage of knives or firearms in any foamed lined cases is moisture retention. Carrying or hauling those items in foamed lined cases is one thing, but long term storage is another.

I have my pistol in a Pelican 1450... I think.
I keep a reusable silica pack in there. Its a little bit smaller than one of those folders pictured above.
I have to stick it in the oven every couple of months to 'recharge' it.
Thats with me opening and closing the case about once a week.

If you put one of those in a box for long term storage, it should be fine for many years.

You can take your chance with long term storage. I won't. I've seen too many blued firearms with marred finishes due to long term storage in foam lined cases. If you are going to do it, I'd recommend at least using closed cell foam.

There's a website called nalpac I believe and they actually sell foam inserts special made for knives, worth a look I think.
