Knife Storage

Noxious are you using an AK to cut cheese? If so thats awesome gettin some pretty thin slices. My wife tends to look at me funny when I use any busse/knives in the kitchen.

Was the thin nick made to be a kitchen knife? Curious cause it looks like it to me.

I didn't read all the posts, however, if you want the absolute best way to store collector grade knives call Bill at Bills Custom Cases. I had him make a case for a fixed blade, and another to hold a dozen folders. He will take your call talk to you for a while, and ask you what you want exactly. His work is the absolute best, and it is truly custom, he makes what you want. He is very fast at making your custom case, and he puts two elastic bands on the outside of his fixed blade cases to hold the sheath for your knife. I was redundant in this post a couple times, but he is the best and prices are reasonable. A note of caution when I talked to him last time, I inquired about some cases that I saw on a website. He told me they were counterfeit and not his, so order directly from him if you order.

As someone who's been burglarized, I recommend that everyone put **ANYTHING** of value (jewelry, guns & ammo, all paperwork like insurance/tax/house/business, Bussekin, etc) in a locked immovable device that cannot be opened with a heavy crowbar or prybar. A safe is a decent start. A safe that is cemented & framed into the structure is better. Hit 'n Run thieves will find what you consider hidden & take it. IIRC average "in & out" time is 5-7 minutes. In that short time they can trash your house and locate/steal stuff in obscure locations you think are "safe". They're not.

Noxious, Bussekin can be recruited for kitchen veggie duty and do a passable job, but are not the optimal tool for the job. (Says one who has used them in the kitchen often enough. ;) ) They will take a backseat to good thin dedicated kitchen slicers. The operative words are "good thin". Not a wally world $15 chef's knife. A blade that will cost you a Franklin or two or three. And a knife with a spine thickness of 1/16" +/-. Skinny Japanese kitchen knives can slice 'n dice veggies all day long like cuttin' air & not wear you out. In the kitchen, Wauseon bruisers come into their own busting up animal parts & other cleaver & crunching applications.

OP, best place to store your Bussekin is in your hand while beating the tar out of it.

I agree, I spent 6k on a Fort Knox safe, it is bolted to a concrete foundation in four places. It is at a different location than where I live, but I do keep one firearm per room here plus one on me at all times. when you have over 50k in firearms and knives an expensive safe is common sense too me.

For Storage, you first have to define What you are willing to lose. and under what conditions.

Anything over $2,000.00 (in aggregate)of any particular brand or heading (Knives/Firearms/Tools/Watches/Jewelry/Coins/Art pieces)

All require Riders relating to insurance, and how they are to be stored or displayed.

Most so called safes (not builtins set into cement) are concentrated Wealth in a convenient carry out container although fire rating does have some benefits.

But very adequate for dealing with kids/neighbors/junkies and the occasional plumber/carpenter/electrician.

On an average you will loose more (value) to not having them all wiped off and put away(misplaced) than you will to actual professional theft.

Once you have more than fifty Busse Knives, assuming that you have sheaths for most of them, storing without sheaths becomes kind of a Nightmare when the time come to find a particular sheath for a particular knife.

Pegboard, in the sheath makes keeping track pretty easy. (but can be scary so far as casual theft)

Roll around Mechanical Tool Boxes (think Snap-on or Craftsman) have been very popular amongst people with over a hundred.

Stacked cardboard or plastic boxes set into Gun lockers(or gun safes) is sort of an interim step taken some where along the path of having many knives.

Display? Fun, but limited as to how many/where (unless of course you are single or have an unusually understanding Spouse.

Me? I reccomend keeping the ones you want to touch more readily available than in a Safe/Box/drawer/locker, Strewn about, in and out of sheaths, some here, some there, certainly some on your desk and near your bed. If you want to try them in your kitchen, then pick a few for that and USE them, so a few in the kitchen (a NICK any of the Anorexics(Badger) Boney Active Duty, Cuttuless (no I do not remember how to spell it) I suspect that a WTF will make a Fine Kitchen Cleaver, Right up there with "Ward" (you know, Mister Cleaver)

Define What you are willing to lose and under what conditions, I have lost most of mine to sales, and a Few Dozen that I have given away as Gifts. What I have left is either Strewn about or sitting in Cardboard or plastic Boxes stacked in Gun Lockers.
(I like the Peg Board, but I lack the wall space and I fear losing those to casual theft)

The older ones I usually remove the handles and throw em in the pile out back, then clean one off when I need it.

I totally agree that dedicated cooking knives are best. I just Enjoy using my Busse more.

As for the burglar part. All you can hope to do is slow them down, and hope that they will miss some valuables in their rush. I've seen them pick up so so watches and leave a Rolex.... Now that is rushed!

Having my Busse spread around the house (some mixed up with ordinary house hold wares). Will make it less likely for thieves to view them as more valuable than other items/ knives, so I hope. I can only pray that they will miss a few. There just aren't any ways to be completely safe.

I've cut both cheese and tomatoes with most of my Bussekins..... And I swear that "cutting the cheese" has got nothing to do with my user name;). Yes, I have used the AK to cut cheese.....

Don't know about the "thin nick"....

Does anyone keep there knives/swords in a foam padded hardshell rifle case like pelican brand or anything like that? Im curious to know if the knives/swords stay tight fitted inside when closed and being carried or will they slide all over?

Any info would be great on this before I get one. I prefer not to have all my stuff on display
Thanks!

I'm a fan of pelican cases for my knives. I also use reusable desiccant packs that you can recharge in the oven that keep the knives dry in the airtight case.

FYI Guys, Harbor Freight has a nice looking Windsor Design eight drawer felt lined wood tool case that looks like it would work great for larger knife collections and it is currently priced right for $69.99 with coupon.

Like Jellyfish I got a pelican 1350 for Christmas from my son and love it, was thinking I would need the 1450, but after strategic planning I think this 1350 should hold upwards to 42 folders, way more than I'll ever own!
