Knife to carry in Bear country

Just add salt to your shoulder or clothing, at least you could let the bear have a little flavor.

I see this is old, but had to comment. I lived in North Georgia, before conceal carry was a legal thing, and even after they made conceal carry legal, we were not allowed to carry any pistol greater than .22 rimfire during small game season (January-March), as well as muzzleloader/Archery only (Sept-Oct). That changed sometime after 2012 ish, now you are allowed to carry any caliber in a side arm that meets conceal carry dimensions, any time of year. So... Yes, we carried side knives for defense from bear, cat (yes there are Mt lions in N GA), perhaps pigs, etc. Besides, we needed a knife anyway for random chores, also long knives were used to get game out of holes in the tree, or cut twisting rods out of grape vines, and run those up hollow trees, twist the hair into the split vine, and pull the squirrel, coon, etc out to the bayonet that was at the base of the hole. At that time (70s,80s, 90s, etc) many country kids still had domestic pigs, and it was normal for folks to have a pig sticker. I still have my grandfather's. Pigs were killed with a .22, or .32, etc. But a big boar pig can take a shot to the head, and shake it off, the lead will not penetrate. So out comes the sticker. The pig was in a fenced chute, and was easy to reach. Most stickers were made from military bayonets, or a broken cutlass. They were often marked with different years on the blade,1903, 1907, 1917, 1942, etc. I carried one muzzleloading, Archery, and coon hunting. (Yes we had muzzle/Archery bear season later), and if you wounded the bear, you could not reload the muzzleloader fast enough, hence the need for your pig sticker. I never stabbed a bear, but I had prepared to, and stood in front of a boar black bear with a pig sticker, and a empty muzzleloader, his hair went up like a dog shackles, and pawed the dirt like a bull, fortunately he actually slipped down the bank into a creek, and died, or died then slipped. Since they changed the law, I haven't thought about it much, and carry a Glock23, and small folder, but I remember the good old days when our coon dog struck on a bear, and you could hear the Mt laurels breaking in front of you, you knew a bear was headed your way, and all you've got is a .22 and a knife. It's cold, pitch black dark, and you're scared shit-less, but you had to be out there. We were young, and wanted to be like our father.

Re: Bears . . . Never bring a knife to a gun fight. Who do you think you are? Davy Crockett? 🤷‍♂️
What about a Big Bear Lovless style subhilt?

When I lived in brown bear country, many of my friends favored the 44 mag, but I carried a 357. I figured it gave me a better chance at getting all my rounds into the bear before it killed me.

I planned on taking posthumous pride in that. Leaving my bear-mauled carcass next to an unfired pistol, or even one with 2-3 rounds expended, seemed an unbearable disgrace to my family name.

I know you said no guns, however, I am taking a gun. If I don’t use it nobody will know. If I do use it at least I will be around to explain why I brought it. I would also run like hell down hill, bears don’t do well running down hill as their front legs are shorter than their hind legs, they will trip up and roll

Good luck with THAT...
A bear running downhill is still MUCH faster than you are.
There are exactly ZERO circumstances where you will be able to out-run a bear.

Hell, a three-legged bear running uphill is still much faster than you are....

But as always, I don't need to run faster than a bear. I just need to run faster than you. :)
Than me???
You are as safe as you were in your Mother's arms.!
(Slower than the Spring thaw here...)
