Knife to carry in Bear country

I had a client that was a big game hunter. For quite some time he held the record for the largest Kamchatka bear in Russia at 13' something. Seeing pictures, I ain't going anywhere near a bear without at least a howitzer.

There was movie a while back with Anthony Hopkins called The Edge where the hero, Hopkins, is stranded in Alaska with a giant Kodiak bear hunting him and all he has is a beautiful folding knife made by the late great Canadian knifemaker, Brian Lyttle, and he kills the giant by making a spear and having the supergrizz fall on it. Except.
I've seen the knife. It's a beauty. No way could it penetrate deep enough to kill that bear. It's stupid.

The knife wasn't part of the spear. It was used to prepare a number of spears, and their tips were then fire-hardened.

You may be right and I may have forgotten. Thanks for the correction. Fire hardened wood penetrating the bone and muscle of a bear weighing over half a ton. That makes even less sense. I liked the knife a lot more than the movie

It's your funeral, I'll suggest three, pick the one you like best.
Tops Prather War Bowie
Ontario SP10
KA-BAR BK9

I would also suggest carrying a staff.
Use your brain before using the tools.

I loved Legends of the Fall and nobody wants to go out like a punk, but the best thing to have when you're duking it out with a bear is a cyanide tablet (just don't take it too soon or you'll feel silly when it wanders off). I still carry a blade in the bush as a tool and of course because I'm even less interested in trying out foxy boxing on a bear's nose to see how that goes, but I wouldn't want to count on reenacting the ending of Legends of the Fall for the win.

That’s a true story, I know- I was the bear

If you want a serious answer, been a hunter for 4o years, including black bear.

Any K bar military knife or
k bar ontario clone copy lkke the sp 1 combat.
A cold steel bowie
or this

I personally carry an Ontario SP 1 combat with a special grind on put on the tip for penetration. Bears are very tough animals, to kill with rifle or bow, you need a stiff stout blade to puncture.

I didn't realize there was bear country that won't allow bear spray but allow large fixed blades.

I have read a great deal of debates on the minimum caliber for bears, but never even considered a knife. I am in black bear country, and never crossed my mind. I do carry a gun when with my dogs.

The knife law that I think is funny is how in Michigan I can carry a hand cannon under my shirt, with permit, but not fixed blade. WI you can though.

In many places in Canada, bear spray is illegal, but a big knife isn't.
Most laws about "weapons" make no sense at all.
Where's that? Seems like it's legal to use on bears anywhere out West.

Problem could be the folks who try to buy it to use on people?

If you're going to say something like can't carry it in Toronto I'd guess that's probably because bear attacks have really dropped off there.
