That's a nodachi. Good idea, I'm thinking of throwing that at the bear and running... Of course they can run faster than a horse over short distances but you have to think positive...

Thinking about it, the best knife in bear country might be a Swiss Army knife or similar. It will keep you from thinking dumb things like how you will use it to fight a bear. That might lead you to being careful to not disturb bears and to get away from the as expeditiously as possible. At the very least it will give the bear a toothpick after he has eaten you... Try to be courteous!

Any knife you can fashion a flaming torch with, because most animals will avoid fire. Better make it in advance and have a lighter in your hand too. At least then if it all goes south the bear can cook you instead of eating you raw.

If you're going to say something like can't carry it in Toronto I'd guess that's probably because bear attacks have really dropped off there.

I’d rather stay out of bear country. Even a burning, flailing bear could still have 3-4 seconds to seriously hurt anything or anyone nearby.

I disagree, with respect. There technically is a right to self defence under the Criminal Code of Canada but there are so many unreasonable and downright oppressive prosecutions that it might as well not exist. I can give you examples if you like, but on the right thread, not here.
No, you cannot have a loaded gun in your house and you could be charged with unsafe storage and other offences.
I also like Western Canadians, and love several who are like family. I do not agree with comparing them to Afghans, but they could do more to stop being screwed over, ever since Pierre Trudeau and the NEP.
Anyway, that's really PA terrirtory, but there you're not allowed to insult other members, unless you do it in a Parliamentary way.
