Knife to carry in Bear country

Where's that? Seems like it's legal to use on bears anywhere out West.

Problem could be the folks who try to buy it to use on people?

If you're going to say something like can't carry it in Toronto I'd guess that's probably because bear attacks have really dropped off there.
Fewer bears, more hyenas in Toronto, but that's for PA.

Pepper spray is a prohibited weapon everywhere in Canada. Bear spray isn't, and here is where the legalisms enter. Bear spray is legal provided it is for the purpose of protection from bears ( and similar wildlife) in a wilderness setting. Otherwise, it's a prohibited weapon and all the other provisions regarding weapons, like carrying a concealed weapon, apply and you'll likely be charged under section 90 of the Criminal Code.

Warning to the uninitiated. I never used bear spray so on one of my earliest trips to the nahanni, which is grizzly country, I decided to train with a canister because everyone knows you have to train, right? Found a nice target tree and practiced. Like a moron. What I didn't know is that on the mucous membranes of a bear it might discourage bears mightily, but on a tree it attracts them mightily because it's like hot & spicy night at the local restaurant for them.

Actually it is no Joke.…..hiking in bear country..

Smoky MT NC National park has a number of fatalities by black bears, as recent as 2020.
see link.

Another person was killed by a Griz near yellowstone recently too.

When we went to the national parks in Wyoming, Montana, I carried a 44 mag s&w. and bear spray and knife.

Over 20 people have been killed by Grizzlies in Yellowstone, Grand teteon and Glacier over the years.

I faced down a bear just yesterday at my cabin with only a Freeman 451 and some bedroom slippers. And a dog.

Walked out in the morning and and next thing I know dog is growling and about 40 feet away is a black bear. So I did what every self-respecting, knife-carrying man would do and pointed at the no trespassing sign and said "ah, excuse me, this is private property. I'm afraid you will need to leave". Bear gave a huff and ambled on down the road.

Damn dog probably invited the bear back so you could kill it with a spear... probably. :D

Never mind.

What kind of slippers, dammit!
I gotta get me some of them for my next trip to Banff!

ETA: Will I need to declare slippers to CBSA?
Hard soled land's end. Nice tweed outer and fluffy wool inner. Very stylish and comfortable.

Come at me bro!

The run courses out here with spray cans that will spray but have inert dye. That way folks can draw and spray before the stakes are real. Some of them even had fake bear on a rope you have to hit.
