I'm in a bit of a rutt. I've looked at a bunch of new knives and just said "meh." I just upgraded my carry gun though to this:

I'd like to get a knife to pair with it. Pretty loose here with budget and size. I'm not real fond of liner or frame locks though, but not totally excluded. Tantos and aggressive recurves are out too. The gun's a J-frame round butt so the gun grips can always be changed to match knife materials. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

well on wheel guns I'm a fan of wood... and I see you live in Texas so.... that opens up a lot of knife options for ya....

personally I'd get a set of Ironwood grips for it, and match a bark river ironwood handled smaller fixed blade to it... Probably something like the " essential " or " city knife "

but hey, I'm pretty old school....LOL

Something small and easy to carry that can still get the job done...just like the S&W J-frame

That J frame is screaming for a set of Craig Spegel Centennial boot grips! As for a blade to go with it, I'd recommend a small fixed blade karambit or a quality folding Karambit (Spyderco, Emerson, 5.11, or Fox). A defensive sidearm needs a good defensive blade for up close and personal work after you dump the first five shots.

I think that the Benchmade Griptilian or mini Griptilian in black would be a fine choice and would match nicely. Also the Griptilian has the ever so fun to play with axis lock. Worth looking into. Good luck.

Is the only prerequisite be that it matches your gun? What is the reason you need a knife? Guns and knives are not accessories, they are tools. More info needed.

Absolutely agreed. You've given us no info on the intended use of the knife. A carry gun really only has one primary use. Sure you can use it at the range (especially the steel framed J-frames. the extra weight soaks up recoil nicely) but really, you're not carrying it with a load of Gold Dots for fashionable purposes. It's purely about self defense.

Now let's look at the knife. Why are you going to carry a knife? For which tasks do you find yourself using a knife the most? What type of environment are you in? Salty? Dry? Rainy? Will you be in a rural area where you can more easily get away with a small fixed blade? or are you in an urban/suburban area where you will want a folder for discretion sake?

I'm fat, slow and have short arms. I'm not sure a karambit will do me any good.

Like most of us, I have a bunch of knives. All of which do what I need them to: cut stuff. So yeah, I just want something that looks good next to the gun.
