I was recently accepted to the University of California at Berkeley. Unfortunately, in the new student handbook it explicitly states that any knives with a blade length over 2.5 inches is a "weapon" and punishable if carried. There goes my BM 710, Delica, and Leek. Anybody have any suggestions? Price should preferably stay under 100. Open to pretty much all major brands.

Thanks in advance,

loving the suggestions so far. blade is supposed to be a folder, btw. planning on carrying this in addition to a SAK so no worries on multi tool level.

Victorinox Farmer or Leatherman Wave if you want one hand opening.

Edit: You beat my post. Isn't the Delica 2.5 inches?

Edit, Edit:D: Nope, cutting edge is just about 2.5". Actual blade is about 3". Why not just carry the SAK and call it?

Victorinox Waiter, so you'll always have a corkscrew and bottle opener handy. :)

Congrats on your acceptance!

normally i would consider just carrying the sak, but berkeley is, quite honestly, not the best neighborhood. Having a little something to settle my mind will go a long way on midnight taco runs.

also, the dragonfly is looking pretty sexy.

I like the scallion idea. however, I think my first choice would be the spyderco dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189. I am not a huge fan of the steel in the scallion.

Spyderco Leaf Storm! 2.5 inches exactly, strong frame lock, wide bigger blade performance, tecchie look to boot...

Where I go to school this is not a problem, I carry the Millie every day :D. But if it does not have to be a locking blade the Spydero Squeak offers a nice price point folder. You could also go with the persistence and get some extra beer funds

Anything with a bottle oponer, in the line of bottle openig tools. Quite useful where you're heading.

To the best of my knowledge the blade is over 2.5.:grumpy: The cutting edge is under but the overall blade length is over.

From spyderco website:
blade length 2 7/16 in. (62 mm) blade steel CPM S30V
length closed 3 5/8 in. (92 mm) cutting edge 2 3/16 in. (56 mm)

2 7/16" is under 2.5", so the leafstorm is a a viable option.

I think the Leafstorm is over the $100 price requirement, but 2 7/16 is less than 2 1/2. Metric conversion says 2.44 inches.

If you were doing in pocket carry, I wouldn't worry about a blade length restriction. Been a college student for a long time (thankfully with little to no knife restrictions) and have never seen a student searched for weapons/contraband. As long as you're not causing a problem or disturbance, a few hours of class time presents a very very (if not zero) chance of ever having a problem with carrying any knife. Do you think teachers/students actually know it's legal to carry a knife period? Or that the blade length limit is 2.5"? Or even be able to judge a blade length by looking at it?
