Knife under 2.5 inch blade length for college?

Depends on the use intended. Pure utility = almost any SAK. Utility/Defense = stout lock blade. I like the Boker Subcom series.

I think the Dragonfly recommendation is solid. Awesome ergos make this a little "big" knife. The G-10 version has a nice quality feel and little more weight.

If you were doing in pocket carry, I wouldn't worry about a blade length restriction. Been a college student for a long time (thankfully with little to no knife restrictions) and have never seen a student searched for weapons/contraband. As long as you're not causing a problem or disturbance, a few hours of class time presents a very very (if not zero) chance of ever having a problem with carrying any knife. Do you think teachers/students actually know it's legal to carry a knife period? Or that the blade length limit is 2.5"? Or even be able to judge a blade length by looking at it?

Its best not to test this theory getting thrown out over a pocket knife. If saftey is your main concern a 2.5in blade may not be the best choice eather. A blunt trama device such as a monkey fist lanyard attatched to keys may be a better solution. No one is comming back after getting cracked with a ball berring tied to some 550 cord. My EDC has changed depending on the school I am attending. WHen I was in Detroit my edc consisted of a monkey fist, two knives, a fenix p30 flashlight. Where I currently go to school, I still carry the monkey fist but usualy only 1 knife no need for a back up.

California Penal Code Section 626.10(b) Any person, except a duly appointed peace officer as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, a full-time paid peace officer of another state or the federal government who is carrying out official duties while in this state, a person summoned by any officer to assist in making arrests or preserving the peace while the person is actually engaged in assisting any officer, or a member of the military forces of this state or the United States who is engaged in the performance of his or her duties, who brings or possesses any dirk, dagger, ice pick, or knife having a fixed blade longer than 2 1/2 inches upon the grounds of, or within, any private university, the University of California, the California State University, or the California Community Colleges is guilty of a public offense, punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by imprisonment in the state prison.

You may want to ask the University to clarify this rule for you. Most of the policies they write list a 2.5" limit, but the legal code listed above is specific that the 2.5" limit applies to fixed blades. Not sure if the policy is a change to the penal code or someone neglecting to note that it only applies to fixed blades. Can't hurt to ask (politely, in a non-creepy way) about this.

Practically, no campus officer or RA will care if you have a Delica unless you hurt someone with it on campus or you get in trouble for something else (like drinking or vandalism) and they need leverage to make you cooperate. Oh, and stay clear of fee hike protests or mass demonstration with anything like a weapon unless you want to be pepper sprayed, tasered and jailed.

If you could track down a Spyderco Kopa, I think that would fit your bill perfectly, this one is in Giraffe bone

And just to clarify, is the requirement UNDER 2.5 inches or NOT MORE THAN 2.5 inches? Because if 2.5 inches exactly is OK, you might consider the Mini Lawman.

Nobody is going to physically search you this is college, not prison. Just carry whatever you want and use one for self defense and the sak for utility.

I was recently accepted to the University of California at Berkeley. Unfortunately, in the new student handbook it explicitly states that any knives with a blade length over 2.5 inches is a "weapon" and punishable if carried. There goes my BM 710, Delica, and Leek. Anybody have any suggestions? Price should preferably stay under 100. Open to pretty much all major brands.

Thanks in advance,

I'm pretty sure the law and rules are 2.5 max for fixed blades, there's no limitation on folding knives for UCs. I had a Para 2 at UCSC and none of the RAs or anything ever batted an eye.

Part b is the important stuff but I'm not actually sure if it's been updated/revised lately, I've personally haven't heard of anything new for this section.

It depends on if the school is a private school or a state school private schools must follow all state laws but can implement their own policy legaly on their campuses. Furthermore some of these school now have metal detectors ect that require you to empty your pockets for security.

What the hell California will actually let you take a knife to college? They have a lot of laws restricting knives/guns that Georgia doesn't have. I go to UGA (go dawgs!) and I don't THINK that I can have any sort of knife on me I'll have to look into that. Sorry for getting off topic but that was just a big surprise.

Not sure if this is an option at Berkeley, but as a current student at Yale, I carry a SAK for utility and pepper spray for self-defense. For whatever reason, pepper spray is not covered in the campus rules prohibiting weapons.

Edited to add: Emerson, you can't carry any knife at UGA? At this liberal bastion, I interpret the rules to say that I can have up to a 4" folder.

The UCs and CSUs are public and as far as I know, none of them have metal detectors. Some high schools in more...shady...districts have basically tight airport screening.

Hmm I am familiar with knife carry in the UC system and have researched some blades under 2.5". Some blades I picked up specifically for UC carry is the SOG flash 1, SAKs, Boker Subcom (it is marketed as a self defense blade, kinda sucks at utility imo), spyderco grasshopper, spyderco dragonfly, spyderco ladybug. At my school in So Cal we have a blade length limit of 2.5" as well however it is very ambiguous because some versions of the policy do not express any limit while the other do. Luckily California state law does not limit blade length on UC campuses, however local laws apply.

Personally, after abiding by this 2.5" policy for a few months. I decided to just carry whatever is most comfortable with blade length going up to 3.25". I have found that nobody really cares and cops don't do any checks, though I tend to unclip my blade when cops are around.

Also any blade length requirement is university policy. So logically cops don't have the legal obligation to enforce policy right? They can't possibly have reasonable cause to demand to measure a clipped knife unless they have reasonable suspicion that it is an illegal knife such as a switchblade which is prohibited under California law? And if for some reason they are able to determine the blade violates university policy and they do notify the school admin and the school admin decides to take administrative action, how can they possibly even prove that you had that knife? The cop can't have confiscate it as evidence because no crimes were committed.

edit: correction, blade length in my post refers to folding knives, not fixed blades. Interestingly I have seen some people open carrying fixed blades at UC Irvine.

According to PC 626.10 you can't have a blade longer than 2.5 inches on a K-12 campus and a fixed blade longer than 2.5 inches on university property. You can have a folder of any length per state law on university property.

The mini tuff lite seems still not available from my preferred US knife stores. Though it was available in the UK from at least last week. Go figure.

that's right.
i saw it for sale at a uk knife site but was already out of stock before i could get my hands on one.
probably a too small blade for my taste but looks like it has some great ergos.
kind of a strider look!

And that is why I suggest the CS Rajah II :)
