Knife under 2.5 inch blade length for college?

I attend college in south Louisiana and I'm allowed to carry up to 5 inch blades. So I've never really had to worry about a smaller blade, though I would recommend a dragonfly. Those are pretty nice.

I EDC my VICtorniox Cadet exclusivly when I'm at college.. Try the kershaw OD-2, $12 on ebay

+1 -- One of the guys I train with carries an OD-2 on campus. Nice little knife. Quick to deploy. Not too tacticool. Easy to replace if someone steals it out of your dorm room.

I was recently accepted to the University of California at Berkeley. Unfortunately, in the new student handbook it explicitly states that any knives with a blade length over 2.5 inches is a "weapon" and punishable if carried. There goes my BM 710, Delica, and Leek. Anybody have any suggestions? Price should preferably stay under 100. Open to pretty much all major brands.

Thanks in advance,

I got my undergrad and JD at UCB. Knew plenty who were assaulted & robbed there over the years. Every robbery I personally knew about involved a gun, even motiveless assaults were from behind and involved cold-cocking someone or even hitting people with a brick (girl I knew turned around from using the ATM and caught a brick right in the face). Punks wander in from Oakland looking for soft targets, just don't end-up looking like one, and a healthy policy is to expect every one to have a gun. I never was robbed or threatened during my time there, but I have better situational awareness than most people.

If you think that a 2.5" knife is going to give you a sense of security, I would advise that you rethink everything. If you really are concerned, then you may want to consider something a little bigger or more useful and deal with any legal issues if it ever comes up, later. If you live in the dorms, don't "show off" anything, you will get ratted-on.

I work in a building with similar 2.5-inch restrictions. The three most common knives in my workday rotation are:

  • Spyderco Dragonfly
  • Victorinox Ambassador
  • Case Swayback Jack
All very different styles, but all nice knives.

Another vote for the swayback jack. Im a college student myself. Thats a great little knife!

I will add that while at work, I tend to carry my endura more, simply because the one-hand opening makes breaking down cardboard quite a bit faster.

If you are living in an apt, then definetely, definetely get a nice kitchen knife (if you can afford it)! I'm stuck with this Cutco piece of junk, and I gotta sharpen the bastard every 2-3 days!

Congrats on making it to UCB!

How about a benchmade Aphid?
2.38" blade
and its assisted (but that could be a plus or a minus depending on your preference)

Appreciate the solid advice here. maybe strap on my 710 if traveling at night. planning on doing so in groups. I'm 6'4 and 200 lbs so i don't know if i appear as a target. Won't plan on carrying much money on me either.

To those citing state laws: I believe those apply to citizens who are non students on UC campuses. according to my freshman orientation guide, 2.5 is the rule.

I love many of the knives so far... keep em coming. might be I'll carry a larger folder at night and a smaller one during the day. Hoping on a CC permit at 21.

U are cool with the knives you listed. I fought CSUF over a 4" Buck/Strider. The 2.5 rule only applies to fixed blades.

I'm pretty sure you'd still be fine though, the law explicitly states "any person" regarding non-military or police personnel. The orientation guide is probably being vague (as they all are...) and just lumping it all together, afaik there are no individual university rules that explicitly state anything else. It's probably still good to be safe in case sheeple get scared when you have to take it out for something, there's a lot of easily frightened sheeple in the UCs. I'd recommend a Dragonfly as it's got a good useable blade and with the choil works pretty well even if you have big hands. More expensive would be either a Leafstorm or a Michael Walker if you can still get one from somewhere.

If you were doing in pocket carry, I wouldn't worry about a blade length restriction. Been a college student for a long time (thankfully with little to no knife restrictions) and have never seen a student searched for weapons/contraband. As long as you're not causing a problem or disturbance, a few hours of class time presents a very very (if not zero) chance of ever having a problem with carrying any knife. Do you think teachers/students actually know it's legal to carry a knife period? Or that the blade length limit is 2.5"? Or even be able to judge a blade length by looking at it?

This is the worst advice you could ever give to another person. This is true but only as long as everything goes well. If nothing dramatic ever happens, nobody will be interested about your blade. But if something goes wrong there is a good chance for you being in trouble because of your knife. And don't think this only applies in an extreme self-defence situations where you have used the knife to protect your life. All it needs to the law enforcement personnel to be interested about you and your equipments is you being in a wrong place at the wrong time. Avoiding those situations is not in your hands. For example a student party can go wrong. A fight, party crashers, participant using drugs, etc. will cause the police to show up, and you being busted.

Oh and the knife... I really like my Spyderco Persistence in EDC use. You could give it's little brother, the Spyderco Ambitious a chance. The blade is 2 1/4 inches. Having used some FRN handled knives I really appreciate the G-10 handle of the Persistence. A really nice knife for a very affordable price.

You sound like you'll do fine at CAL. Enjoy your time there, it will be great and you will miss the people and times there after you leave.

No, I don't think people will want to mess with you, especially if you are on campus or minding your own business off campus. We always travelled in groups most of the times at night anyway (you need to go to Top Dog on Durant Ave. for a Bock or a Brat after the library closes!). The people I knew that got robbed were pretty clueless to their surroundings and would have never noticed somebody following them or walking towards them with any intent.

Couple of folks mentioned the Spyderco Cat, nice knife. Slightly smaller is the Spyerco Chicago, at only 2 in. Surprising useful for its size though. I have a Syperco MeerKat, which is discontinued, but a neat twist. 2in blade of VG-10 with a "unique pressure release locking system." Great little useful knife.
