So....

I received a gift from Knifecenter.com, because they're great, and that gift happened to be a SAK Tinkerer.

I'm not entirely sure how to say this or who I'm going to offend by saying this but here goes: A free $40 dollar SAK has effectively replaced my EDC knife entirely.

Now I haven't totally lost my mind. I still carry a knife everyday. One of my many $300+ pieces in my rotation. They just don't get used anymore. Why would I sully their beautiful fit and finish with the woes of wear when I can do essentially everything I need to do with my new found best buddy the SAK.

I understand that a lot of you probably demand a lot more out of a blade than a simple SAK can produce but man was I wrong for having wrote these things off as "toys for boy scouts."

This ever happen to you guys? Any of you carry two knives? One for using the other for pocket porn?

I carry two knives, but they're both for using. Boker Tech Tool gives me a cap lifter, screwdriver, corkscrew and a blade that's fairly unobtrusive and just generally won't raise blood pressures in public because I'm courteous like that. Manix 2 XL is bigger, tougher and a lot more comfortable for me to use for extended periods. It also holds an edge a hell of a lot longer when I'm cutting abrasive materials.

A lot of us do, welcome to the madness!

Congrats on discovering the SAK. I always have a 91mm Victorinox SAK in my pocket in addition to my main folder. Incredibly useful tool; can't leave home without one.

check out the hole opening SAKs ; they also offer an aftermarket clip for it IIRC. neal

I dunno. While it's true many don't need any more cutting performance than the little SAK blade, I do "demand" my knife have a pocket clip, and be one-hand open and close. :)

That's a big one for me too, the clip, and I have been pondering a way to affix one to the side of this little guy. Nothing yet, but I'll rig something up. I can't stand it loose in my back pocket.

I can't even believe how many times I have used it in a matter of weeks. A LOT. I would have never bought one on my own. Thank you Knifecenter.com for showing me the light! Fantastic tool with a ton of utility. I'd even grab this guy before my Leatherman. I often leave the Leatherman because it's just "too much" in terms of weight and usefulness. On a jobsite, sure, but EDC? Tinkerer all the way.

Same here.

In December, I entered into a "challenge" on another forum to carry only a Leatherman Surge and no other knife or MT for 30 days. And I figured out pretty quickly that I really did not "need" a modern folder clipped to my pocket. And I further determined that after getting used to no folder, when I did try one it felt like it was in the way.

Another challenge in January (SOG PowerAssist) confirmed my new-found freedom from the modern folder.

I still like modern folders. I just have not carried one for more than 5 minutes in the past 10 weeks, and somehow I have survived.

It is quite liberating. A true paradigm shift for me.

So yeah. I can get by just fine with a SAK and nothing else. I may carry an MT from time to time, but for the foreseeable future I will not be carrying a modern folder. Once you get used to the freedom, they just seem unnecessary.

Self defense, you say? That's what my Glock 43 is for. If I am legally justified in stabbing it, I'm also justified in shooting it.

I have nothing against modern folders, and still dig them. I just can't figure out any good reason to carry one.

Wait till you discover the alox models...

I carry a SAK Tinker and either a Kershaw Crown (or Drone or Oso-Sweet). I need a OHO as I use a cane. My Kershaws are great, but IF I had to only use one knife, it would be my Tinker.

I couldn't believe it.

When I got the package my initial impression was "oh look someone sent me $20 (as I was going to sell it on the exchange)." Later on that day I had some work I needed to do outside and I went over to my EDC shelf to pick out a good user for the job. That's when it dawned on me, I'd just use that SAK I got in the mail and spare my precious folders from the terrible dirt and grim (I just cleaned/oiled/sharpened everybody). So I grabbed it, threw it in my back pocket and went on my way. A week later and it was a permanent resident in that pocket. A month later and I'm starting to question everything I've ever believed. It was hard enough justifying a $300-$400 dollar folder versus a $100-$200 dollar folder. Now it's $400 folder vs $40 SAK.

I have to say that if it weren't for my job not allowing me to CC a firearm and my grossly out of control addiction, I wouldn't even carry a folder anymore. Especially after someone flaunted their custom scales on their SAK!!! I love personalizing. :)

I typically carry three knives daily. A Vic Classic on my keys, a Tinker or Super Tinker in rear pocket, and a Spyderco locking folder in right front pocket. They all see regular use. A Spartan (same as Tinker but sub corkscrew for Phillips driver) was my only EDC for 20-some years. The same knife used daily, they are wonderful tools.

Wow, they sent you a free knife? That was nice...I've tried to get them to send the knives I wanted to pay for and they wouldn't! But I digress...

I bought a Cadet Alox about 3 months ago, it hasn't replaced anything in my usual carry, but it definitely has earned it's place and is carried almost daily...incredibly useful for being something so simple, I assembled an entire piece of Ikea furniture using it (didn't have real tools available) once.

IMO, an SAK can be one of the most useful things you can carry. I normally EDC a Victorinox Executive, which I've been carrying since around 1999, and a Spartan, along with a large CRK Insingo. I would probably rather carry my Alox Pioneer over the Spartan, but I carry a mini screwdriver in the Spartan's corkscrew. Otherwise, the Puoneer would pair well with the Executive, tool-wise.
