I had an idea. How many of you have gift exchanges at Christmas in your families? My family does this, since we have such a large family. It would be too expensive for all the brothers and our inlaws to exchange gifts, so we pull names out of a hat. We keep the identities secret, so that we have no idea who is buying us our Christmas gift.

I think that since we are so much like a family here, that we have a Knifemakers Christmas Season Gift exchange. I propose that anyone interested in this make an EDC knife for the gift exchange. No one is to make a high end, embellished knife, but a simple every day carry type of knife that they can produce without taking a lot of time out of their schedule. Many of you probably already have one laying around that you could use in the gift exchange. No pictures are to be posted by the makers, but instead, the receiver of the knife would post the pictures of the knife that they received and a description, with their happy comments!

If you're interested, please post your intent to participate here and also email me the following:

Your name and shipping address.

What I will do is address envelopes to each person. I will then put the name and shipping address of each person on a piece of paper too. I will then fold them and put them into a hat. I will have my wife draw out the names and put them in the envelopes, checking to make sure that no one gets their own name. This way, I won't know who has my name either. I'll email them out on November 1st. So if you intend to participate, please get your information to me in plenty of time!

My email address is scott.ickes@timken.com

Come on guys, lets get into the holiday spirit! Just remember, keep the knives simple. Maybe a little decorative filing, or mosaic pins, or damascus for those that use damascus primarily, but don't make a $1200 knife. Sheaths are optional, and up to the maker to decide whether or not to provide one.

I'd take a customized kit folder. craftmanship and spirit is the important point :)

I'm in.

If I make a folder from a kit is that ok or should it be made all by me?

I think a kit folder would be wonderful. We all have different styles and are at different points in our knifemaking journeys, so it doesn't really matter at all how you make your gift knife.

There may be someone that wants to get involved that doesn't even make EDC knives. This is alright too. Make whatever you want. I suggested EDC because most of us make an EDC of one kind or another, but if you don't make an EDC and would prefer to make something else, go for it.

This is all about just giving and friendship. I know that whoever makes a knife for me, it will be a most cherished knife that I'll show to any and everyone who visits my shop.

I'm actually hoping that the person that I end up making a knife for is someone in a place that I travel to on business. Since I travel to about 15 states on a regular basis, it is a possibility. If the timing is right, I might be able to deliver it in person! How cool would that be?

I'm in...email on it's way. Fantastic ideal, Scott! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I don't make folders, but I can make a nice EDC fixed blade ;) a woodcraft type thing should be very appropriate.

Make what ever you want. EDC, fixed or folder, is just a suggestion. But make whatever you're comfortable making. This isn't about following some kind of contest rules. It's about making something for a fellow knifemaker in the spirit of the season.

Whew, glad about that. I read about the folder part and freaked. Not even gonna try to pass that off. Fixed I'm in with though!!!

Scott, I'm in! This is gonna be really strange for me, because I've never had a knife leave the shop that was not in the trash can! I'm excited and paranoid at the same time. I actually started the gift knife this afternoon, cuz I'm gonna need all the time I can with this project. I hope no one minds getting a knife from a fairly inexperinced maker, but I promise I'll do the best I can.

What should be the approximate delivery date? Obviously before Christmas, but did you have a date in mind? -Matt-
