Josh - great talking to you at the Blade Show. Wish I could make it out to your hammer-in. Everyone I talked to who went last year said it was a blast. And with Tom Ferry and Tim Hancock instructing there's not a bladesmith on the planet who couldn't learn a thing or two by attending.

Folks, I just realized I never posted any info on the New Northeast Hammer-in (July 21,22 in Essex, Vermont) on this thread. For those interested, check out the website ( http://www.dicksworkshop.com/hammerin.htm ) and the thread here in Shop Talk ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=463398 )

The line up for the 2007 Ashokan bladesmithing seminar (Friday September 14- Sunday September 16, 2007) is done! I finally capped it off with the exciting addition of Ric Furrer to show us how he makes Wootz and other crucible steels. This will make for a seminar that I have wanted to see for some time, one where almost every ancient method of steel manufacturing is covered and actually done. While Ric mixes up his crucibles, Michael McCarthy will be firing up the bloomery hearth to produce a bloom of steel for us. Later in the day Rick Barrett will show us how he folds and welds Japanese swords.

While all this is going on, Burt Foster will show us how he makes some of the most outrageous hamon activity I have ever seen on western blades and forging integrals. Dan Maragni will share some pointers he has on grinding longish blades and his choice of must read books for this year. Jim Siska will show hollow grinding techniques, and Tim Zowada will cover how to sharpen them when he gives us some insight into his time with straight razors. For those who get too caught up in all that ancient metal and blade making and need some primal gladiatorial release, Bill McGrath will be giving a short course on the use of short swords. I will be taking some time out to share some of what I have been doing with the microscopes and the study of steel from the inside.

Those wanting more information on how to sign up can find it at my site at:

http://www.cashenblades.com/Ashokan.html

or call The Ashokan field campus at (845) 657- 8333

Hope to see you there. The Ashokan seminar is one of the oldest and most highly regarding gatherings in the business. The information presented there is unequalled and solid, the scenery nestled there in the Catskills is phenomenal, and as always the food alone is worth the trip.

Half Assed Hammer In -- HAHI

I was hoping to do an informal gathering in early August. I'm located in Blacksburg, VA, on 85 acres.

We'll do a little forging, grinding, hamon work, 22 shoot out, maybe a 3d shoot, BBQ, and show and tell.

I have a feeling I'll be the only person there ;) , but if anyone is interested send me an email.

Matt

Sounds like fun, Matt. Have you taken the bar exam yet? If so, then you can have a "prep course materials as forge fuel" demonstration:D

I could easily do Bothell! Do you know the next date or dates?

Thanks a bunch. I want to do stonework for handles but I need to know pretty much all I can find out to ensure work I expect to do will be up to the task or quality expected. I retire in about two months and will have a lot more time for stuff I want to do as compared to stuff I have to do.....

Hi,
I'm a newbie knifemaker in Tucson Arizona. I've made a nice bowie for my father and a not so nice brittle cinder ( read -broken knife after quench) for my wife. I'm working on building a shop to work in out of the heat and rare Arizona cold. :)
I would like to know if any of you guys know of any hammer-ins in Arizona or New Mexico or Southern California. Also are there any makers Arizona who give weekend classes. Feel free to e-mail me

If anyone knows of anything going on in the Erie-Buffalo-Cleveland area, please drop me a line. I've got wind of a few blacksmithing events, but the bladesmithing seems to be poorly represented.

Or I'm poorly informed.

Thanks,
