Knives and Drinks!

This is down to the level that it needs to be finished off by New Year's. I doubt I'll replace it, as I can't really imagine an instance that I'd prefer it over Ardbeg Uigedail when I'm craving peat/smoke

They're both excellent Islays, but I find the Ardbeg hits you over the head a little more with its peatiness than the Lagavulin 16 does. I like both, it just depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Oh, without a doubt, both are great. I would never turn either down, that's for sure. What I notice in the Uigedail specifically (the only Ardbeg I've tried thus far) are fruit notes that balance it out for me. I'm fairly new in my journey with heavy peat though, so I'm sure there are subtle notes in the Lagavulin I'm not picking up as well. I also tend to like the boldness of flavor in higher proofs, so that could factor into my preference.

Here are the three that I've tried. I took me a while to get past the iodine and notice anything else, and at first I wasn't a fan, but after some time periodically returning to them something clicked and I started loving the briny flavor.

And in a proper glass, no less. Well done. ;)

There's a good chance I'll be traveling to Islay next Fall, where in-depth "research" will be conducted...

A blind taste test game New Years Eve. The bottles were hidden a way. Each person took a sip from the red solo and ranked their favorite in order A thru D. You were also allowed to write down either the type of whiskey and or the actual make if you thought ya knew one. I ranked them C, A, B and D as far as my favs. I knew C was a Single Malt and was pretty sure it was an Islay. Funny deal I thought the Suntori was Glenlivet. Missed that one and it was the only one I guessed on.

I love doing stuff like this with friends. I wouldn't be too concerned about guessing wrong. It could have just been the solo cups. It's been a decade or two but I remember them having a slight aroma of their own.

Yeah I’ve never liked drinking whiskey out of plastic. It was fun. More fun that I expected it to be.
