Brought home from Edinburgh, but it's almost over

Skipping bourbon tonight and going international for a change. Wow this is good!

Is there much difference between Scotland and Irish Whiskey?

Most scotch is peated. Irish whiskey generally is not. Bunnahabhain 12 is special because it is not only a non-peated scotch but a non-peated Islay. It has an interesting flavor and aroma profile that is a nice comparison against Irish whiskeys.

Thanks, but what does peated mean? Appreciated.

So once the barley is malted, it must be dried. Heat is used. Dried peat from peat bogs was a traditional fuel source in these regions. The smoke from burning peat adds flavor and aroma to the malted barley. So an extra variable between different scotches can be how much peat character they have, how smokey they are, or how those flavors and aromas work with the other notes in a whiskey.

Thanks, much better understood now.

I'm definitely a Beckerhead at heart (though have not yet attained the privilege to claim the official designation). I'm working on it and it's why I'm here today.

Today's knife however, is the Ontario M3 trench knife/fighting knife. I'm a sucker for good/beautiful designs of all types.

As for drinking - in that regard, I have without question, attained the loftiest of statuses (even have a local patch to show for it). I haven't reached the end of the internet, but I've reached the end of the ability to consume alcoholic beverages without flat-out falling over dead. I quit while I was ahead by making my last formal consumption a hearty portion of a spectacular tart cherry cider. Nowadays, it's water. Fill/drink this bottle at least 2x day. Better for me.

However, think not that I intend to rain on a good-natured parade... Not at all! In fact, I'd like to share a favored poem by Carl Sandburg:

HAPPINESS

I asked professors who teach the meaning of life to tell me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool with them.
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines river
And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children and a keg of beer and an accordion.
