Knives and flashlights ( traditional )

Silver Twins: a Mikov linerlock from the Czech Republic (thanks, Tom) and a very old school Montgomery Wards flashlight:

I love that flashlight GT, proper old skool :D:thumbsup:

I can't remember exactly when I purchased the Gerber but it was at least 25 and more like 30yrs ago to the best of my recollection. I love how simple and rugged it is. The Gerber stamp (not into the metal) that once was on the barrel, was worn off long ago and is barely visible now when the lighting is just right.
Mine is definitely no older than 20 years but that was what was available in the UK, and I remember the silver one and the green led one I bought after that were cheap as they were in a stock clearance. So maybe Gerber had already bought out CMG in the U.S and what I got was just old stock in the UK.

Thanks, David. It still works as well as it ever did, but is not very bright by today's standards, and I rarely use it for anything. But since we re-discovered it in a drawer in the basement a couple of months ago and found out that a change of batteries was all that was needed to get it working again, it has been sitting on the back porch ready to use for after-dark trips to the back yard, etc.

Here's another classic: a big Maglite. This one uses only 2 D-cells, so it's not "weapons grade", but I've been using it fairly successfully in locating and picking up dog poop now that the pooch's after-supper trip to the back yard occurs after dark.

A blue maglite solitaire was my first flashlight of any kind and coincidentally my first " EDC " pocket flashlight too.

I found this one for $1 at a yard sale recently.

The LED solitaire is miles ahead, I think I already posted that one but I used it the other day and misplaced it anyways.

You mean like these?

:D

My brother still has a 2-cell with a LED upgrade which is his go-to house torch.

These old eveready's were $1 a piece at a thrift store a couple months ago.
What a great catch. Eveready in India still make flashlights like that.

...
Yeah, with the larger "swing radius", those definitely look more intimidating than the red one I posted!

You guys are making me want to get one of the 6D models and adding a carry strap to it, they're not expensive at all so I just might buy one for fun.

I saw one in a movie as a kid and I just thought the idea of a flashlight big enough to need a strap was so cool.

I got rid of my 2-cell Maglite about 5 years ago, and haven't carried a Mini for a long time. I might have a Solitaire around somewhere, but even my tiny key-chain flashlights have a LOT more lumens :)

They are reliable in my experience, but absolutely Maglites are not the performers that others are.
Even their LED versions or with LED upgrade bulbs, unless you spend way more than it's worth to upgrade it.

Now if you start adding the D cell tube extensions from Litt industries you get into fun almost novelty territory which is worth something, but I'm not sure I quite want to make myself a Maglite walking stick.

Believe it or not, I managed to lose not one but TWO 6D Maglights. How someone forgets an ~18" long, 2lb flashlight, I don't know, but I did. Loved them when I had them, though.

I just ordered one ( received a discount code ) and I ordered a 275L led upgrade bulb.
I also ordered a 2d extension, but will probably have to use it on my 3d because apparently 8 could overpower the bulb.

If you wanna get more intimidating you can apparently buy a pointed tail cap and a spiky bezel for them.
I haven't really tried it under "field conditions", but if I were going to "weaponize" a Maglite, I think I'd want to hold it by the head to get a less slippery grip for swinging it, so I'd probably pass on the spiky bezel! ;)

I'm not into that sort of thing either.

My 6D was once wrapped in anti-slip tape and both the 6D and 5C had at one time thick rubber O rings located near the cap end to increase grip options. They improved the grip no end, but that was back in the day.
Great to see the Solitaires. I've just dug my old Solitaire out as another emergency light I'll place somewhere in the house for the coming 'dark winter'.

Totally, it's amazing they lost their position as THE definitive flashlight. They seemed very slow to adapt, as LED flashlights began to dominate the market. I did think of upgrading, but the upgrades seemed expensive, and not that good :(

Take out the batteries, and replace with concrete! ;) :D
