Knives and wives

My wife is ambivalent about blades. She doesn't see why I'm so attracted or why I have so many. But she is a great housekeeper, and always picks them up and hides them away somewhere. Like a squirrel hiding nuts. So I just buy new ones.

I gave up on sharpening her kitchen knives. Seems she is fond of banging them together in the sink or trying to slice ceramic plates in half. No man is equal to that.

117. And if you need a nice, custom leather sheath for one I have a couple.

I'll give up my blades to have my wife back. All of them without a blink.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) that won't happen.
She was okay with them as long I was enforcing the law of equivalence: if I got myself a $300 knife, she was entitled to a $300 Lulu or Coach voucher.

Mine gave me a custom from Ray Laconico for a wedding gift, and since then has not discouraged me from getting anything. So far I have been able to say that I have never paid as much for a knife as she has.

She considers it an inexpensive hobby, all things considered, and wants me to enjoy my hobbies.

The title is fitting, as my first wife also allowed me to enjoy the hobby. Her last gift to me before she passed was also a custom from Ray Laconico.

When you do archery, MTB riding, surfing and more, the occasional knife is pretty insignificant.
Plus I need them as a Coastguard (UK) so that usually makes it okay; same with good torches.

She rolls her eyes but she tolerates it. I have my hobbies and she has hers. I have bought her things like a SAK classic but she often does not even have that in her purse. When she wants something cut she usually just asks me for a knife.

I don't smoke, drink, or chase skirts. I guess it is a pretty harmless hobby and she sees it that way.

Wow. I wonder if this isn't the norm as far as our hobby goes.

My wife gets a new purse. $4X the last purse. Holds stuff, has a strap... pretty much the same as the last purse.

I'm betting she sees my hobby the same way.

I got a new knife. $4X the last knife. Cuts stuff, has a handle... pretty much the same as the last knife.

As long as there is reciprocal respect for our indulgences, I guess we'll be okay.

Probably rocking the boat a bit here but I’m seeing some incredibly outdated views of gender inequality here!

My wife and I share jobs, co-run a business, I look after the kids as much as her, we have equal purse strings and more.

It makes for a pleasant, balanced existence.

She hates my knives.....I hate her for that.
“One day i’ll sell all of your knives!” she often yells at me....”please leave one so I can butcher your horse!” I always yell back.

I bought my wife an inexpensive Kilimanjaro DW Folder for work when I bought one to try out three years ago, and it's progressed from there. Last Christmas she got a stepped titanium Spyderco Chaparral that she loves and is her EDC. Real thin profile, and a great knife. For hiking she has an ESEE Izula II on her backpack. Last week she got a Spyderco Mantra as her new every day work knife and has enjoyed using it cutting bailing twine from hay bales and anything else that comes up. For a woods knife she has an ESEE 3. Occasionally she'll question some of my reasoning in buying what I buy, such as why I would need another fixed blade, or why I'd have two of the same knife (discontinued). But it's my money and one of the few ways I spend it, so we really don't ever have disagreements over knives.

She is cool with my knives. She only carries a pink SAK on her keychain.
I might get her something a little larger sooner or later.

Wife has 2 SAK's, 1 Mora, 1 Kershaw Blur, 1 UTX-85. All bought by me of course.

I say they can co-exist.

She was fully aware of my hobby before we tied the knot.

Compared to my other collections and hobbies, knives are much cheaper. I have bought some very expensive competition guns, three guitars and expensive cameras and lenses. Plus my wife is OK with whatever I buy. I worked 50 years and saved enough so that in my retirement I could buy whatever I wanted in reason of course.

Mine thinks it's a bit ridiculous but she say's that about all my hobbies, I just smile. No trying to justify anything anymore, just sounds like an excuse to her and really who can justify the 6th knife purchase of the month? She knows me, I know her, it's a sort of acrimonious topic so I don't bring it up neither does she. She does appreciate knives and when she's approachable on the subject I show her my latest, she oohs and awes and we discuss the merits and then away it goes. She bought me a nice display case for X-mas which is already bulging at the seams with what I already have. She doesn't keep up on what I have so really doesn't know when a new one comes along most of the time (when I can get to the PO before her).

She carries a nice Purple ZT 0609 and a Kershaw Dividend in M390. She's a produce mgr, the Div is a great paring knife and also makes short work of cardboard. She keeps the 0609 nice but it's always in her purse. I touch up her Div about once a month.
