Knives aside, what are your other hobbies??

I like hiking and photography. Here is a pic of the Zion "narrows". It's the nicest pic I ever took.

I'm interested now in fine clothing - bespoke suits and the like. I haven't yet done anything about it, thanks Dog. My full time hobby is to look for a job. As hobbies go, this one sucks.

Oh, and another expensive (and fun!) hobby:

Too many hobbies.
Rocks and minerals and have traveled extensively to climb into caves and old mines to get them.

Whitewater is still a passion for me. (when my back is not falling apart) :D.

Read way too much. (Usually 2 to 3 books a week.)

Dogs and off leash dog parks. (Organize campaigns and write proposals.)

Target shooting. (Now I know why my dad and uncle were complaining about their eyes as they got older.)

great thread...

I have had many hobbies over the years , was into racing pretty heavy , SCCA Auto-X ( 914 , Rx-3 , Rx-7 ) , KART racing ( KT 100 ) and off roading. Racing will always be a passion.

Lately my hobbies have been mainly just shooting , I don't do as many local competitions as I used to , used to shoot IPSC , bowling pin matches , plate matches and Vintage Military Bolt Action Rifle matches ( VMBAR ).

Lately shooting is just recreation , sharing it with my sons is the best ( ages 5 , 8 , 15 ). We hit the range at least once a month , if not twice or more. Being able to go shooting with my sons and my dad , makes it that much better.

I do still compete ( as well as run the timer ) for our local monthly subgun matches , along with my father. This pict is from the UZI Nat's held here in Vegas a couple years ago ( I lucked out and got first ).

Other hobby is archery , I shoot a Hoyt Avenger Compound , my oldest son shoots a Hoyt Game Master II recurve , middle son shoots a small Bear ( youngest one is still building arm strength ). Another hobby I can share with my sons.

Yeah , my form sucks , that left arm just will not go straight ( street bike injuries ).

My other hobby is my digital SLR , photoshop and web surfing.
I seldom watch TV , unless it is UFC , Speedvision or Military channel.

Having 3 sons , heck just getting them to and from school , after school activities , church , youth group and band practices is a full time hobby.

Though for me , knifemaking is my # 1 hobby right now ( ok maybe #2 behind sharing other hobbies with the kids ). My boys are also knife geeks in training. ;)

There is a new hobby looming on the horizon , that should start around spring... I am going to be building a Rat Rod , unsure exactly what , 20's-30's , chopped , channeled & sectioned , no flash , just a daily driver rat rod. Why ? Always wanted one , and it has been many years since I did a project car.

This IS an interesting thread. I also have too MANY hobbies. I have always played a LOT of sports until blowing out my knee in 1985. Since then my basketball, tennis, volleyball and softball activities were ended giving way to windsurfing, cycling(roadbike is a Tomasso full Campy), mountain biking(still have my GT Zaskar), downhill skiing, hiking and motorcycles(I have a sport bike, touring bike and cruiser).

My more leisurely activities are working out, playing pool, throwing a few darts casually, shooting (until the state closed the forests to target shooters), occasionally archery (compound and stick bows), collecting various things that interest me besides knives (tools, carvings, sterling cigarette cases) and learning to engrave.

DDD - I know from your books that you did a lot of Oceanography related work, but what are your hobbies?

Peter

With all these shooters, we should try to get together a members shoot sometime....

FOPA will cover anyone so long as we make it a competition and they drive straight there and back!

Heres what the group I shoot with does for fun a few times a year. Note: a car is for concealment, NOT cover.:

I'm just as passionate about bodybuilding and nutrition as I am about knives and knifemaking. I lift weights 5 days a week, and I'm starting to really focus on grip strength and old time strongman type stuff.

I also dabble in the martial arts. I studied Aikido throughout college, and did some MMA stuff a couple of years ago. I'd like to get back into that.

Oh yea I used to mountain bike alot last bike I built was an Ellsworth Truth thats how long ago that was.

My hobby is women

Understand this now, and you will experience much less grief.

Men play games(martial arts, construction, man against nature..... whatever)...that is what we do.

Women play men....that is what they do.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I just hit it and quit it. no falling in love here!

But thanks for the lesson, it will be remembered.

Hey guys, please don't forget -

The idea was to get you to post pictures too,
With you in the setting/hobby where you spend some of
your spare/fun time.......

And maybe one of these women you are talking about? :)

I think these pictures tell us all who you really are - the guys
that usually just exchange knife talk or knife related philosophies
suddenly appear in a totally different light....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Steven, the photo you posted has inspired me to crack open a beer! Hopefully one day we'll get to drink some together.
Thanks!

I, too, have more hobbies than I should. That's what my wife tells me, anyway. :D

I love pistols designed by J.M. Browning, the 1911 in particular. And I love taking horrible artsy-fartsy pictures of them. ;)

The crown jewel of my collection is a 1943 Ithaca (the idiot scratch was there when I got it! I swear!):

However, I'll take anything designed by JMB in any size. I do have my sights set on getting a 1902 Military some day.

I spend a lot of time in the garage, working on various contraptions. Mostly a rigid Shovelhead that will be finished "some day", but occasionally on my grocery-getter:

On the occasions where I have lots of wind available, I have a variety of stunt kites that I enjoy flying. This one in particular is a quad-liner that pulls about 150# in 20mph winds:

I also study iaido (like STeven, but a different ryu). I've been involved in some form of traditional Japanese or Okinawan art for over 20 years. The only weightlifting I do, though, involves a fork. :D

Most of this stuff has taken a sideline in the past three years though. There is a very good reason for it, though.

We enjoy singing (while I attempt to play the guitar), reading, flying paper and RC airplanes, and watching Pixar films over and over and over.

I've always loved animals and owned a few pets. Here are a few.

Also like rocks/gems. Here is some spectrolite. It plays with light similarly to pearl.

I play drums, though not really actively. This shot was me a few years ago at CBGB's before it closed.

I've always LOVED watching weather. Here is a funnel cloud that formed right near my house last summer (very rare in NY, and I surprisingly snapped this shot)

I've also spent quite a bit of time in a dark room doing basic black and white prints. I love photography and my eye is decent but I haven't yet put the time in to really learn much about it. I have spent alot of time with photoshop also, but sorta forgot how to use it over the past few years.

Nothing is better than enjoying your hobby with someone you love!
