knives at school?

I could understand a small folder. I just crawled out from underneath my rock and actually looked at the Falcon and noticed it was fixed blade.

I couldn't justify carrying around a fixed blade at school. I always had my Buck Prince, which is a VERY small folder (2.5" blade, barely 5" OAL i think). A fixed blade seems more suited for SD, and therefore (IMHO) is a more aggressive and threatening knife. I wouldn't advise a fixed blade. Maybe I am just weird, but a small pocket folder is alot more acceptable.

my falcon is a folder.

Strangly enough, the private school my oldest boy goes to (Jr. High) has no restrictions on pocket knives. Kershaw/Onion Baby Boa is his knife of choice. Makes me smile every morning when he slides it in his pocket.:)

What junior high school is that!?!?

i gotta say even though im 101% for carrying a knife (regardless of were you are ) in todays zero tolerance anti-everything society its just not a good idea. since there isnt much use for a knife at school, both due to the fact that you cant be openly working with one, and there isnt much hard utility type work going on at school, it dosnt make much since to carry one. if you drive to school just have one in your car, which at least at my school is fine. i would be for carrying a knife if it wast for the harsh punishment if your caught, and the fact that there isnt much justification for carying one at school. even worse is the fact that even if you are responsible with a knife, that dosnt mean the other students are.

a grim reminder of what can happen if a knife fals into the wrong persons hands:

ultimatly if you understand the risks, and are responsible you shouldnt have any problems.

As a high school student, I can safely say DON'T DO IT.

Here's why:

If you get caught, you WILL be suspended at the very least, expelled and charged at the very most.

It will be a violation seen on college transcripts, can barr you from certain priviledges (such as prom, midterm/final exemptions etc.)

And for what?

If you carry the knife at school, you can't take it out and use it. You should never even think about pulling it in a fist fight. If there is a school shooter/stabber etc. your school will immediately go under lockdown, meaning you'll be locked in the room, and odds are not in the same room as the shooter/stabber- rendering you useless. If the shooter/stabber is in the same room as you, you're not going to do too well for yourself trying to fight.

I love my knives, but I never intentionally bring one to school. I know that because I keep a knife in my hatch in my toolbox I will possibly bring one to school accidentally someday, but even if that happens, it's out of sight and reach. Don't carry on school grounds!

don't take the MOD, you will never see it a gain and there is $80 something down the drain, cary something easly replaceable if you must, and just stay below the radar.

I am in collage now and always have a leatherman on my belt and a spyderco, benchmade or cold steel cliped to my front pocket, love small towns.

When I went to school, I carried an Old Timer from the time I was in 4th grade through most of high school. I then carried a Buck (don;t know the model but it was a 2 bladed folder slightly bigger than the Old Timer). At that time, there was noneed to hide it as it wasn;t prohibited. I graduated from High School in 1976, and I think the issue then was how you acted with a knife, not that you just carried one. If a guy threatened someone with it or was brandishing it in a dangerous way, he'd get in trouble. But just merely carrying one for general use was not only accepted, but not even given a passing thought.

But then, back then, we didn;t have these tactical looking folders and things like we have now....at least, not that I was aware of. A big knife was a Buck 110, not a BM Skirmish. Come to think of it, the Buck 110 is still a big knife :D

Hi. I'm new here and love the boards so far. Great place to learn new things.

But what about the thread "Need weapon for office enviroment."
I couldn't help but notice that even though the consequenses may be the same, it was greatly encouraged for that person to carry at his job, where the rules specifically states no knives allowed. Everytime someone would ask why he needed a knife at an office, or to offer other alternatives to knives, people would get irate, and say get back to the subject.
I would imagine that getting suspended at a high school, would be far less inconvenient, than having to find another job. What's the difference?

The responses seem to vary from individual to individual, depending on who asked the original question. Why is that?

What's the difference?

Kids.

Seriosuly, that is probably the biggest factor. If you hear on the news some dude stabbed another dude at work...it's sad but not incredibly vexing(sp?)

You hear there is a stabbing at the local middle school, suddenly it is a TRADGEDY! And if you have kids of your own, it is very scary. Kids are supposed to be innocent, the school is supposed to a quaint little learning environment where everyone is treated with respect and friendliness (etc. bullspit)

like i said, i dont think i would get punished. its a small school and i know my dean/principal pretty well and he likes me alot. Id just say "oh crap i forgot it was in my pocket" but he would just take it and my parents would need to get it or id go put it in my car. But that wont happen, theres no way they will know i have it inless they search me, which isnt gonna happen eather.

Dude it doesn't matter if your on good terms with them. The whole zero tolerance policy will leave them with no choice but to punish you, maybe even being expelled.

.................The responses seem to vary from individual to individual, depending on who asked the original question. Why is that?

I've often wondered that myself.... "Why are these individuals disagreeing with me? Why is it that they absolutely must have their own opinion? Why is there so much variance from individual to individual? Why can't they just all think the same thing at the same time?

I've pondered these questions, all to no avail. Not only do I not understand why people must think differently but, they continue to do it in almost every post! I've recently decided to throw in the towel. After much cogitation, I've concluded that the only people that I can get to agree with me, all of the time, are me, myself, and I.

Welcome to the boards, KnifeUser1 :D :D :D

same reason why you want your own opinion

I had tons of knives growing up but I never thought once of trying to take one to school with me. All you need is for 1 person to find out you have a knife on you and then they may tell someone else, or tell the administration, a teacher, etc, and you're toast. You think the administration will put their career on the line by letting you get away with having a knife in school just because they like you? Maybe in your area they could get away with letting you off easy, but who knows.

Also what happens if some kid jumps you and starts a fight and they bring in the police and the police search you and find a knife on you? You might be leaving in hand cuffs, even if you didn't use the knife in the fight, you had a "weapon" on you on school grounds. I just wouldn't take the chance, but it's your life so do as you wish. :)

I always love this topic. I, thankfully, grew up at a time when a knife at school was less than a non issue, so, like most other guys, I always carried at school. I was a knife nut at a very young age:). I realize times have changed, but damn. Too bad for you kids.

I'd also have to say that if I was growing up now I'd still do it. I just wouldn't advertise it or let anyone ever see it.

so your speaking on the behalf of everyschool....theres no way you can say that and be sure of it. Because at my school my friend had some kind of CRKT folder on him and they just took it and he didnt get suspended or introuble, he was just out a knife.

When I was still a punk teen, I carried some cheap stilletto's to high school, and sometimes a small .22 semi auto. Never got into trouble though. Thank the Lord I'm outta there.

Nowadays, I carry various knives to college. They vary from twin 6" daggers to 3" folders. I carry the folders (Benchmade, Spyderco) for everyday use, the larger fixed blades just for enjoying the freedom of carrying, which has been taken away by our government
My favorite EDC for college used to be a small nieto fixed blade. Nice looking and pretty cheap, but I gave it away.

Are you SERIOUS? That's FANTASTIC! (I would just make sure that policy can be found somewhere in writing) Now there's a school administration that deserves support. If they sell T-shirts or sweatshirts or ball caps to raise funds, let me know.

My grade school and HS were like that as well. Carrying a knife was a non-issue, but using it as a weapon was. :D
