knives at school?

There's your "safety" at work. and I asked around in gym class the other day and EVERY person in that class is carrying, yet we've never had a stabbing to my knowledge at my school. I think "kids" are quite a bit more responsible than "fogies" give us credit for, fogies in this case referring to anyone over 25 :D , unfortunately in today's society we really don't get a chance to show this because everyone's too busy "protecting" us from ourselves. Peoples perspectives change as they get older and they forget about all the stuff they were allowed to do when they were kids, they make excuses like "well kids these days...(insert derogatory phrase of choice here)" and that they were much more responsible when they were that age. When in reality teenagers have always been teenagers and some of that entails doing stupid things, but there are quite a few older people that do stupid things so folly is not limited to youth. Maybe if more people stepped back and asked why there are more violent crimes and whatnot by teenagers today then they might see some sort of correlation between when these rules that are "protecting" were enacted and things like columbine. hey might discover a correlation not because the rules were put there because of those things but instead those things are happening because of those rules. Think about it, before all these ridiculous rules, if someone was an a**hole and pissed you off, what happened to him? You'd have a fight after school and let out all your frustration that way. Nowadays if you get in a fight you get expelled and go to counseling, so you bottle it up inside until it is no longer acceptable simply to let out your anger on that one person, no you have to make EVERYONE pay for their transgressions. However, the rules still prevent you, so you keep it inside until even just beating them up is no longer an option, now they must die, and everyone with them. I don't know, maybe I'm just pulling this stuff out of my rear but it seems to make sense to me. I think instead of not allowing “kids” to have knives and guns we should be teaching them the proper respect for them and how to utilize them for what they are, TOOLS.

Sorry for the rant, but it just sets me off when older people look down on me because of my age, and don't give me a fair chance to prove that I'm as responsible and intelligent as the next guy.

I understand your point, but allow me to make myself clear: preventing kids from carrying knives at school doesn't mean that "we" (the old guys) don't trust you. It means that we don't want you, surely a responsible and intelligent kid, to get stabbed and killed by somebody who is not responsible and, indeed, just too young to handle a "dangerous tool".

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this point. I have my opinion and I respect yours, however misguided I may think it. :)

under my school's rules any weapons are forbidden, even though they issue craft knives to the new students. CA state law allows for folding knives in colleges, and i've seen teachers and students alike walking around with knives no problem--so i'll continue to carry.

Wow, why don't we just disarm the entire population!?!?

I carried a knife frokm a bout sixth grade on. Graduated in '98 from HS never had a problem, in my school we had a no weapons policy which meant if you used something for a weapon you could suffer serious consequences, the status of weapon though was not concitered impliced by the object, thus if you have a knife and use it to peal your orange, no problem, if you have a screw driver and try to stab someone with it bug problem. I think this is the most reasonable policy. Almost everyone carried some kind of knife on them at my school and no one has ever been attacked with one. Simply making them illegal because someone might hurt someone with it is like banning cars because so many people die in car crashes
I recently when back to college so I don't really have anything to worry about I regularly use my BM610 at school (workstudy in ceramics studio) but I admit I also carry a 615 in case think someone might really get freaked by the 610 (maybe 1 in two weeks) the main thing is that the only time people see you with your knife out is because you are using it for a tool (as it should be)

and now in england they're making any pointed object illegal. they're going to ban swords, and they've already started replacing pointed kitchen knives with rounded blunt tip ones. and yet people still find objects to kill eachother with.
