Hi all.
My Mom wants me to compile a list of recommended knives for girls ages 8-16. Of course when I heard this the first thing that popped into my mind was a Swiss Army Knife. However, just wanted to see what everyone else has to say. Here are some specifications:

- General purpose (camping, adventures etc.)
- Not a huge blade (probably want a blade between 2-3.5 inches long).
- Doesn't have to be locking
- Plus if it has scissors.
- Plus if it is really easy to grip.
- Not a bulky knife.
- Cost preferably below $30.

I understand that the hand sizes will be very different in this age range so you can recommend knives for all ages or knives for a specific age range.

Thanks

I think I'd pick the same knife regardless of sex. I don't see why an ordinary small locking folder wouldn't work. A Leek? Or whatever the respected small budget folder is these days.

My girlfriend loves the Pink Kershaw Shuffle, though I'm guessing its more popular with college aged girls.

It might be nice not to have an assisted opening as it can be a little overwhelming to have a knife that just flies out. Since this is most likely the first knife they will be purchasing it would be nice to have a knife that is pretty easy to operate and not going to fly out with a little pressure.

I'm told that a Smatchet works best for children of all ages! :D

My daughter who is almost 8 has a Pink Spyderco Native 5. Great little knife. Over your budget though. Swiss army in whatever configuration you want would be good for non-locking. Ontario Rat 1 or 2 depending on size or the Esee equivalents (Zancudo & Avispa, I would choose the Esee but either brand is good) would be great for a budget friendly knife. Lots of color options for both.

Of course, proper adult supervision and training of how to safely use a knife will be way more important than the type of knife.

-A knife is not for girls at that age, IMO.

-An average SAK needs to be opened by nails, and therefore not recommended for most girls.

Victorinox Bantam, Cadet, Tinker, Pioneer, or Farmer (I am not a fan of scissors on multi tools).

Leatherman PST, Fuse, Sidekick, Wingman (Fuse and Wingman have scissors, Sidekick has a saw which I find more useful).

I grew up in the Scouts and went on many, many outings, including lightweight backpacking trips with a PST backed up by a Tinker. Even when I got older and the outings became longer duration and further from home my PST and Victorinox were all I ever needed.

My twelve year old daughter would be very, very surprised to hear that, considering she loves the cadet I just gave her. Also loves the Utica girl scout knife I gave her when she was 10. But what does a stupid girl know? She certainly doesn't have your common sense or experience.......

SAK

My daughters had SAK ever since they started Brownies.

And they were too active to have 'nails' until they started dating. ;)

Girls have way better nails for opening knives that have nail nicks that need nails to open than guys who also open nail nick knives with their nails dude.
