Knives for girls ages 8-16

My twelve year old daughter would be very, very surprised to hear that, considering she loves the cadet I just gave her. Also loves the Utica girl scout knife I gave her when she was 10. But what does a stupid girl know? She certainly doesn't have your common sense or experience.......

Oh but this is a list for girls 8-10... somehow between 10-12 these knives magically become appropriate for girls, don'tcha know? ;)

The nail nick thing is definitely a valid point IF the girl uses nail polish. I'd look at the ladybug.

Girl, boy, man or woman, it doesn't matter. SAK Super Tinker, and/or Spyderco Dragonfly. It's tiny and my 8 year old loves it, but it also fits in my L/XL paws.

Now, not trying to derail the thread here, but I have to ask.
@Divo As much as I disagree with it, I see your point on a SAK. BUT, in your first statement you said "knife", as in, any and all. Why is a knife not appropriate for girls that age? Is it OK for a Boy?

My 9 her old pulls my Alox Solder open no problem. She also shoots a 25# recurve, and shoots my vintage Daisy single cock BB pistol with no problems. Maybe your experience is YOURS and not everybody else's.

As a girl - much older than 8-16 now, but still a girl, I'd recommend a SAK. If they will need something larger than the classic, I'd go with the executive or the already mentioned tinker. I find for my purposes a SAK has the best variety of tools any girl might need. The scissors and tweezers are a definite plus. And a SAK is virtually indestructible. Let us know what the final decision is.

I would agree with the sak, I gave my daughter a Wenger evo and it is perfect for her.

-An average SAK needs to be opened by nails, and therefore not recommended for most girls.
That's why switchblades were created. To save young ladies' fingernails.

A cute little Piranha Fingerling in the color of her choice would be perfect.

Seriously, though, any small folding knife like a SAK or Dragonfly or Peanut should be fine. Let her pick the color.

The most important thing is that it should be used with responsible adult supervision and she should be taught knife safety.

Ontario Rat folders and the Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite are all available with pink handles. I belueve the Ks Bar Dozier folders are as well. All under the $30 mark.

Victorinox Huntsman or Fieldmaster. Both have scissors and a saw so they would be great for camping or everyday use. Just depends if you want a screwdriver or a corkscrew, otherwise they are identical.

Here's what I'd suggest:

Like Forrest Gump says with stupidity: Misogynistic is as misogynistic does.

Leatherman Sidekick. It's like the "cheap" version of the Wave. Not too aggressive or expensive for a younger person to use. The Leatherman Rebar is a step up from the Sidekick if you are willing to spend a little more. Neither of these multitools has scissors though, so that might be a deal breaker for you. Either way, they come in a nice silver finish. Personally, I can't stand it when products are marketed in pink for girls. It's mildly insulting to suggest they should use a pink version of something when the regular version will do just fine. Good luck.

My 8 year old daughter isn't quite ready for a blade yet, but when she is her first will be a small SAK or Opinel. It will not be pink, her favorite color is black.

I agree. I actually went into this thread just to see how many recommended pink knives. It's ridiculous. Not that the knives are pink, but that they're automatically recommending pink knives for girls/women.

I've actually had the nail thing mentioned to me before by a girl, but that was more because of handling a slipjoint with an exceptionally strong backspring. A SAK likely wouldn't be a problem. I'd throw out the Spyderco Clipitools as possible contenders, as well - the option for a pocket clip if you want it (I do), you can pick the scissors option, and 8Cr13MoV is better than SAK steel (think it's 1.4116?) in terms of edge holding. The ergos are also more useable than a SAK classic. If not, maybe a Boker Subcom or Cold Steel Tuff Lite (Or Mini Tuff Lite).

EDIT: I somehow forgot the Drifter. The Drifter is an amazing value. I'd recommend the Dragonfly, but it's a bit out of your price range.
