Knives for girls ages 8-16

I would suggest giving them a choice of appropiate and legal knives and allow them to choose what fancies them.

With that said, I've picked out a couple for my daughter to give as gifts when I think she's ready:

Bark River Big Mountain Skinner with purple fiddleback maple hande for hunting.
Survive! Knives GSO-3.5 with purple G-10 handle for outdoors/general utility.

She'll also have (not pictured) if she wants it a purple handled Spyderco delica, which I've put away for her.

If very young, leatherman style cs or micra (the models amaze me, and i hold them in high regard). If older, maybe a leatherman wave or a small folding knife up to a 3 in blade. Or maybe a small neck knife.

-A knife is not for girls at that age, IMO.

-An average SAK needs to be opened by nails, and therefore not recommended for most girls.

We have a winner.Single most offensive thing I've ever read on this forum.

Ridiculous. As is the "pink" thing. If I gave my wife a pink knife she'd stab me with it.

You know what kind of knife you get a girl or woman? The same one you'd get a boy or man.

That GSO-3.5 looks great! My wife has the purple Delica. It's all covered in packing tape goo. Great knife!

Seriously, some folks just plain don't get it and never will. On the pink thing, just like preferences for any handle color, people like what they like. I happen to love camo. My daughter loves pink and purple. The color of the handle for her knife was an easy choice. If she liked chartreuse I would have looked for that. We don't have to assume that a girl will want a pink knife but we also must not assume that she wouldn't. Here is her Native that I started teaching her to use during our camping trips this summer and fall:

My girlfriend has had a couple knives. Her first was significantly beyond the price range listed here, it was a Benchmade Mini Griptilian.

At the time that she lost this knife, I couldn't afford to replace it with another Benchmade, so I got her a Sanrenmu 763. She likes the axis style lock in order to spare her finger nails.

I'd be more inclined to hand my daughter at a given age than my son. She would mainly carry it around and store it with her other "treasures". My son on the other hand would have to try it out on every material he comes across.

The amount of sexist nonsense I pick up on weapon forums these days blows my mind. Thankful BF isn't like that.

I would say most of BFC isn't. As you can see from this thread there are still some Neanderthals out there.

Not only that but I'd love to know who all these expert people are who are, apparently, "therefore not recommending" a SAK for most girls.

My daughter loves pink and thinks all pink knives are cool she is 5 though so no knife for her yet. She looks at them online with me and likes all the colored handles yellow blue purple. My wife has a yellow spiderco ladybug in her purse. I like Spyderco for first time knives you get a good knife that they can learn to sharpen they have a wide variety of styles to choose from and most have modern features like clips thumb holes etc. 2c

LOL the pink auto is hilarious.

For a blanket recommendation I pile on with the SAK, incredibly useful and great value, hard to see really whose life could not be improved with a SAK.

There are lots of other great knives but for a one size fits all recommendation the SAK is hard to beat. Pocket tools like the leatherman are good but mostly much heavier, you get more bang for the buck (or per ounce) with a SAK.

I agree with the SAK recommendation. At that price point, variety of tools available, and ease of use/proper knife safety techniques you won't find a better option IMO.
Girl or boy, sex matters not, any youth with proper training and levels of respect for knives are equal, also just my opinion.

I am definitely on the SAK bandwagon, although any number of small folders would do. Personally, I just think it's fantastic that you want to get your little one exposed on the Sickness.

Of course! Some girls and women like pink. But it doesn't mean they have to.

And I would imagine any of us, as knife junkies, would want our wives, daughters, etc etc to become sophisticated knife users and to enjoy knives as much as we do. And just getting them a knife based on color doesn't do that.

Just for the record, my wife owns a Spyderco Kerambit, a Dave Shirley era Northwoods sambar half congress, an AG Russell Woodswalker, and a Mora Clipper. None pink.

And some tough guys like the color pink! And yes, handle color is a terrible way to chose a knife. That said, it is a plus when a knife you like comes in a handle color you also like! Man, this makes me want to get all my camo handle knives together for a family photo, and to play with them all....Quiet is right, this is a sickness.

I freely admit that I love purple, and will probably pick up a purple Endura at some point. Also, I am loving the knives Jmboz shared above. That purple handled GSO 3.5 is the way to go, man.

P.S. I'm married to a woman who is starting to be more into knives, but hates pink, and hates how it's used to market stuff to women. She has one pink Chive, and that's about it. All the rest of her knives are other colors.

Vibrant colored handles can also be cool in terms of breaking the ice with kids or people you're otherwise not familiar with. My oldest daughter has already spotted the pink Griptillian that was out some time ago, needless to say she wants one haha!
