Knives for girls ages 8-16

Ontario rat 2, esee zancudo, your choice of opinel, svord pheasent knife, kershaw scallion chive or leek, (if you want to get a traditional) a trapper peanut stockman or congress pattern, cold steel tuff lite & mini tuff lite, cold steel micro recon 1.

Pretty much what came to my mind

I always recomend my first knife for everyones first knife- a Kamp King. Cheap off the bay ($6) carbon steel so easy to sharpen and a lesson about maintaining, has handy tools. Scales pop right off to spray paint your kids favorite color.

My daughter got her first knife right after becoming a teen. A Keshaw Vapor. That has become her favorite knife.

She later talked me out of a brand new SAK Deluxe Tinker. that I had just recieved in the mail. She has a nicer SAK than I have.

Just get your daughter a knife that fits her hand.

I have four daughters so I have some experience buying knives for girls

First
They really like the Boker Subcoms, they say it does not look like a knife before opening, it one hand opens really easy, and they are very sharp and easy to sharpen and have a lanyard hole so they can clip them somewhere

Next
SAKs,
They all have a Classic along with whistles on their key chains
And Tourists with corkscrews and openers for picnics, BBQs and camping, they like the different color scales
Classic matching with the Tourist

They like small stockman slipjoints

They do not like knife knives
When they go camping, will not take a Mora, or an Opinel
Do not know why

All of them know knife safety and use knives well

WFT does an eight year old need with a cork screw?

My first knife as a kid was a SAK waiter. I used the cork screw tip to poke and scrap things, came in hand at times actually. Never used it to open wine though.

My nine year old nipped a finger whittling with a SAK Executive when she took too deep a bite, it got caught in the wood and she backed it out. Locking or Fixed-Blade knives can be safer for inexperienced users.
At the camp kitchen, I tried to get her to use a BK-24. She thought it was too small - kept going for the BK16 and Fiddleback KE Bushie.
(My 8 year old's been using kitchen knives since she was 4 - until she saw her older cousing tear up his knuckles with a the saw on a SAK - improperly carving a pumpkin - now she's afraid of sharp things.)

They each have an Executive when we go to the woods, and are welcome to use any of mine at home for appropriate tasks under supervision. Neither wants their own just yet.

You don't need to get the one with the cork screw. My first knife was a SAK with a cork screw when I was 10 (I think I was 10). I never used it but it certainly didn't hold me back from using that knife for many years.

My daughter's first knife, at 8, was a red Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD. She loved it and learned the knife basics on it. She moved "up" to an Opinel no.6 this past year. I also love the Svord peasants and she does too!

Hi all.
My Mom wants me to compile a list of recommended knives for girls ages 8-16. Of course when I heard this the first thing that popped into my mind was a Swiss Army Knife. However, just wanted to see what everyone else has to say. Here are some specifications:

- General purpose (camping, adventures etc.)
- Not a huge blade (probably want a blade between 2-3.5 inches long).
- Doesn't have to be locking
- Plus if it has scissors.
- Plus if it is really easy to grip.
- Not a bulky knife.
- Cost preferably below $30.

I understand that the hand sizes will be very different in this age range so you can recommend knives for all ages or knives for a specific age range.

Thanks

These two are small.

+1 that it makes no difference who it's for. What matters is what it's going to be used for. Also not a fan of giving a pink or other "girly" colored knife just because a girl's getting it. Give the person the right tool with the resources you have, let that person's preferences determine the aesthetics. SAK and Opinels get my vote for under $30. If you're willing to go a bit higher and are looking just for a modern folder, I love the Kershaw Emerson series. Nice variety too.

3 daughters. Oldest one has an Endura, middle one has a Lava and the youngest has the etched Dragonfly. All have stated that they will raid the knife box when I am not around which is why it is locked up. When the two oldest come home to visit, I sharpen up their knives - I know that they are using them. Youngest works at the grocery store and is the envy of the male stock boys when she whips out her Dragonfly. They all understand that knives are tools and work much better opening things than fingernails, car keys, etc. Can't see why you would get anything different based on whether the child is male or female - maybe other than color - but that can be their choice.

I think the Kershaw Rainbow Chive looks stunning and would attract anyone who loves bright colours. I am planning on one for me.

I agree. I actually went into this thread just to see how many recommended pink knives. It's ridiculous. Not that the knives are pink, but that they're automatically recommending pink knives for girls/women.

I agree with the automatic linking of pink knives for girls/women - why pink for girls? If it is the girl/woman's favorite color - sure. Get a knife in a color she will enjoy.

For myself, I happen to love the colors pink and purple and many of my knives purchases reflect that preference. However, I have gifted many female friends with knives in a color of their preference, none of which were pink. Blue, Red, Teal.

As a young girl my first knife was a knock-off SAK and I loved it. I used that thing all of the time! I always thought leatherman's were soooooo cool, but we were dirt poor at the time so I didn't get one until I was an adult. I also found myself wishing I had a knife that was a fixed blade (my sister got one and I was super jealous) because even though the SAK had a knife I used it so much that it would have been nice to have a little fixed blade. (now I love my BK11. Judging by my smaller hand size at the time a Remora/BK13 would have probably been an awesome choice when I was 10 or 11)

I saw a bunch of y'all suggesting Swiss Army Knives, which is a great option. A Leatherman Squirt should be in the price range you mentioned too. Someday, it'd be good to consider getting a small fixed blade too if they get bitten by the knife bug, but that's all a personal preference thing.

Once you have a list of options if you can ask the young lady in question what she prefers that would be ideal, if it's a surprise, well I'm sure you know her well enough to get something she'd like.
