I agree that you can and would adapt if it were more necessity and find a way ... maybe a dive knife set up strapped to your leg? ...
but we do adapt and improvise when we need too ... I went to the waist pack then shoulder pack for hiking to carry the odd things you end up wishing you had ... and amazing how many holster set ups I tried until I found the right one for me in different situations.
Where I start, there are people walking, hiking, or talking and I don’t want to draw attention to myself as any knife would likely result in some authority being called. About 3 miles in, there are another 50 miles where I’ve never run into another soul. So I would have to carry a pack in anyway, and somewhere after 3 miles could do fixed blade setups, even openly holster my glock 17 (I know, I need to go smaller) without fear of any legal difficulties. I live close to NY/Nj border, and often cross state lines on the trail.
