knives for self defense? is it mental?

Running is always a better option, the art of self defence is avoidence, live to fight another day etc etc, you can call it anything you like but you did the right thing, i imagine pulling a knife in that situation would not have been prudent, pulling out a 12 gauge shotgun might have worked though...

In all reality if you are ever in a situation where you need to use a knife then you need to remember not to let them see it if at all possible, carry a small fixed (I use a push dagger and to hell with the law) or something you can open subtly, like a spydie/ermerson/flipper, and keep it down to your side or with your hand slightly behind you, a stab to the stomache is seriously going to take the steam out of anyone, or a slash to the muscle in the arm, stab to the leg and then run will get you out of there.
Just remember you will be shaking like crazy and full of adrenalin, so will not be cool calm and collected, nor steady.
Also remembver that you will most likely be covered in blood and gore, so going straight to the police may not be the best idea, I would get cleaned up, get my lawyer then go to the police.

Give a 12" section of foam pipe insulation to an average teenage girl and tell her to flail it at you wildly while you try to unbutton just the top button of her blouse. Count the number of times she hits you and where those hits are. Imagine each one of them with severed tendons and arteries, then tell me a knife in the hands of an untrained person isn't a force equalizer.

p.s.--you might not want to try the blouse unbuttoning part unless she's your daughter:D

I believe in avoiding trouble for the most part . I always believed that nobody wins a knife fight blah blah . But i spend most of my time in the back country and driving in places that are 50 to 100 miles between towns and a foot or a horse back miles from the truck, i also own lots of guns and am a good practical pistol shooter , but what ive learned is that i always have a knife. Out here there aint no place to "run" to. When you have a familly with babies that have your dying protection over them , all that aviodance crap takes a back seat because yes you may get cut or whatever but some situations out in the country may depend on you and you only to protect them from what could happen to them if you are out of the picture. Dont get me wrong , aviodance and a good gut feeling for it is always your best defense but out here you are your own law for hours or until you get to phone reception in most situations. So yes, right after skinning and boning , personal and family protection are my next reason for carrying aknife everyday.

Well amen to that. However since you live in AK...AKnife, I will assume you would be taking advantage of our very liberal carry laws and have a gun on you.

However I dont think I would take an ass stomping by 8 guys without using everything at my disposal to dissuade them...including a knife. At some point there is full committment and with 8 beating on you, death is almost a certainty.
Still a college kid so no CCW, but once I'm out I'll be exercising my rights.

While we are on the self defense topic. So I have been pondering this to myself for a bit now.So your out walking your dog,And a pit bull or some other vicious dog comes out of nowhere,or gets off it's leash and starts attacking your dog.The owner shows up and he/she can't seem to get their dog to stop attacking your dog.And the whole time your standing there your dog is getting ripped apart bleeding all over, and it's only getting worse.Being the knife nut you are,you have a knife in your pocket. What do you do? Start "shanking" the owner's dog right in front of him/her? Just wondering what you guys would do?

I totally AGREE!!! It's all about TRAINING AND AWARENESS ;). I'm an LEO and I do carry a knife as a backup to my duty weapon and as use for weapon retention. God forbid that if I get taken to the ground or during a wrestling match with a bad guy and they go for my sidearm, they're getting cut somewhere ... I'm going HOME!!!

Like the way many of us are trained with a firearm ... If you HAVE to pull that gun, you better intend on using it ...Same with a knife. I've seen many knife wounds. I gotta say that a knife is just as devistating as any bullet ... if not more.

The knife as a weapon has been with us for a very long time. It's become part of our arsenal for some of us. We teach our military CQC with a knife, LEOs, and citizens have knife training classes. The knife has been used as a tool and weapon for centuries. Before the firearm ...this is what we used. Native Americans fought with them, Romans, Spartans ...

I know that they were all well trained. It's unfortunate that we as citizens also have to be well trained just to walk the streets ...it's so unfortunate that this is what society has become. We all have to have the mindset of a soldier/warrior to survive and walk our own streets.

The knife may not be the best weapon in a situation, but for many that can't carry a firearm ...a knife maybe their only option to survive. I've read many other options to be used ...again it boils down to being well trained with whatever it is you choose to use to protect yourself. Take Very Good Care, Be Safe Always, Be Prepared, and Always Be Aware.

Well said

I also think that you must be mentally capable in the first place and those who are not are the ones that would be unable to effectively defend themselves no matter the weapon.

If the owner cannot get control over its dog then I would kick the dog away. If the dog came after me I would probably punch/elbow it in the nose as hard as I could and if that didn't stop it I would consider taking out my blade. Dogs have sensitive noses, one good punch to it should make it stop. Being a dog lover myself I probably would avoid stabbing it if I could. A better tool for the job would be a gun though, dogs usually know what a gun is even without firing it.

Now there are certain things that are considered animal cruelty, but if the dog is out of control (feral) than I'm sure that whole debate is garbage. Do what you need to do to protect yourself and your family, dogs are family too.

Uh, it's especially creepy if she IS your daughter...

this actually happened to my mom a few years ago. some guy thought it would be fun to let his chow off it's leash and let it attack my dog while my mom was walking it.

my mom didn't want to get bit so she let my dog go and stepped back. my dog killed the other dog. the owner was pretty upset but didn't do anything about it.

if it had been me yeah i would have stabbed the other dog

here's what I DID, 2 pit bulls were running alongside my companions Great Dane biting it, I jumped on all 3 took them down, and started pounding on the THE HEAD AND JAWS of the one biting closer to our dog's neck. The IDIOT, DEGENERATE owner of the pits said "stop hitting my dog" my response was to continue beating on the pit bull's head with all I had, and no chit, I had a CZ-75 clone in my belt, under my shirt [urban area, somewhat high crime] but I never pulled it out, the moron came and pulled the other dog off and the one I was interviewing let go of our dog. Our Dane had a couple not very deep incisions near her neck [I was on those dogs PDQ quick] and we didn't take her to the vet. I am a dog lover too and was fearing for the pit bulls life as I was about 2 hairs away from blasting its head off. WHEW!!!!!!!! I also avoided arrest and jail, bail, trial and whatever else our 'system' may have in store for an honest citizen defending LIFE, although there may be some LEO out there who could have put 2 aqnd 2 together and not arrested me [IF I had fired, hypothetically] I just don't trust LEO to see things my way when they show up, seems like they never do. By the way all I had was the gun and my brain, no knife. I think its best to get a knee onto the ribcage of the biter and pound away, as it can't bite you while it's biting something else, oh, and forget about avoiding jail, just do the right thing in a case like this, and while pounding on said dog, explain to the owner that you are a trained martioal artist and his/her dog will be dead soon if they do not help get it off, failing THAT, and if the dogs jaws persist, go for an eye gouge or two before taking that blade out, HOPEFULLY the irresponsible owner who should have contolled the dog will be in the mix by this time but if you gotta stab that dog there's no option, you can try to warn the owner of his dogs impending fate but calm reflection is not exactly a requirement at this time....and be ready for the dog to free his bite up and lunge at you after he takes the first strike from the blade. Probably a throat slash would be best, I hate to say it, really do.
WHEN YOU HAVE A HAMMER, DO NOT LOOK AT EVERYTHING LIKE IT IS A NAIL.

You are one tuff fella for fighting a pit bull with bare hands. I used to have a Great Dane when I was a teen, very good dogs, can have some back leg problems thought.

I've had so many dreams where dogs attack me, and the first thing I do is reach for my knife.

I don't know why I have these dreams; I'm not afraid of dogs. But I suppose I do fear a canine attack. It's nothing I dwell over during the day, though, so I don't know why it's the subject of many of my dreams.

It was instinct, and I dont go around telling this story any old time. That dog our dane was a sweetheart too. I did have a 9mm, [] but I think I would have done the same without it. No way i'm gonna let her go down without some type of act, my own blood, or otherwise. Thanks for the compliment by the way. [our Dane also liked to be scratched on her back....they can't reach there I'm sure you know]

One vulnerable spot on a dog is the flap of skin on where their hind quarters meet their belly. If you pick up a dog by this skin, they will most likely let go of the dog they are attacking, however, they may bite you at that point as well. I unfortunately had a situation with my pit bull. I lost control of her and she attacked my neighbors border collie, and put a hole in its neck. My dog ran out behind my legs as I was taking out the trash. I ran over, and picked her up by the flaps, and she held on to the collie who was also now in the air at this point. She dropped the collie in about 3 seconds. I felt horrible for my neighbor, but I put down my pit. It was heart wrenching because I found my pit as a stray 3 yrs. prior and had no problems until then. I paid for the neighbors vet bill which was a little over $200. He was a stand up guy, and was even a little upset that I put down my dog. I bought an 18 pack of some domestic beer sat in his garage, got drunk and cried about missing my dog. That was 20 yrs. ago, and still remember dangling 2 dogs in the air.

Yeah, I know. I remember tons of good and funny stories about this dog. Her favorite pull was to lay on the long couch where 6 adult could be easily seated, stretch out and take every bit of space.
For some reason she was always hungry and could eat anything, even raw onions, no matter how much she ate. If you give her unlimited amount of food she would eat until vomit.
But besides the weird things, it was the smartest dog I ever met. We bonded so much she could follow the commands without me speaking it out loud, just by looking in my eyes, no kidding.
Sorry for taking it off topic:o

We hunt wild boar here with pit bulls and can tell you that once that dog locks its jaws, it is on there, even if that dog is dead. Any boar hunter will know this. a large boar will at times eviscerate a Pit and it will expire still locked on the Boar. As far as jumping onto 2 pits and a Great Dane in a full on scrap.....well its just extraordinary that you did not get bit....even by your own dog. one person cannot separate 2 motivated pits by oneself with bare hands. You can punch a pitbull square in the head with everything you got and it won't faze it, especially if its in "fight mode". Pound for pound men are very weak compared to the other mammals on this planet. What we do have is a superior brain which we use to develop tools/weapons as the equalizer.

If a knife can be taken away from someone, then a flashlight, pepper spray canister, taser, and a gun can be taken away as well.

Running may not always work - you're assuming that you're faster than an assailant or assailants.

We're also assuming that we're defending ourselves against street thugs. Some people enjoy the outdoors and are at risk of wild animal attacks. You can carry bear spray. But if a cougar attacks you, you don't know anything about it until there's teeth sunk into your skull and claws in your back.
