Knives of the Blade Show 2011 • Art, Classics, and Innovation

congratulations Jim, well deserved!

I think that's just terrific that the ABS saw fit to honour both Coop and Eric in this way. Congrats.

Thanks guys. All of you. I enjoy posting this in thread as much as you enjoy viewing. I have more to come, but I'm awaiting some confirmations.

The focus you had going at Blade was quite impressive. Energy was literally radiating from the room. I also witnessed times when you were sitting, almost in a trance, recharging yourself for the next round of work. Would have made a great picture but I did not want to disturb or disrespect your "reflecting" time.
Lol! Rob, thanks. After the second day, I literally decided I'd shoot two knives and then take a short 3-min break. Shoot two knives and sit again... You saw one of those moments.

Soooo...a new Hossom! I'll guess the sister to the second one with the white handle (long and lean one).
You are a close second. It's got lipstick. ;)

Coop

Coop,

Darn, I was going to choose that one but remembered that super cool desk knife Don made for you (yes, I love that knife) and that thought swayed me to the Long Tall Sally. The lipstick really makes the handle pop and I assume you are getting a twin sister with lipstick AND white handles.

Congrats, cool knife!

Rob, the knife in question is on the way home to Coop. I'm sure he'll get a shot of it up soon.

Jim, thank you for these posts and again all you do for us ABS members. The awards for you all and Eric are well deserved.
Thank you also for the great company at the banquet. Diane and I enjoyed having you all there, it was a good evening.
I am looking forward to the rest of the show.

However hard we think Coop works at BLADE can't come close to the reality. It was all Susan and I could do to keep up with him. Part of the fun for me is seeing all the great knives but not having to be responsible for how the images turn out. This year however, somewhere in the great middle of things, Coop had to take a break and I needed to step in for one shot. Wouldn't cha know it would be one of the more challenging pieces - an amazing monster goblin folder by Ray Rybar. Ray laughed with us about it when I asked in desperation if it would be OK if I cut the thing's head off and stuck it back on in a way that would make it easier to photograph! ;)
This one-eyed creature swallows men whole (note the skeleton behind the ribs!) and espouses a new world order on both sides of the big blade. The main thing for me was the eye - I love that eye. Feels like it's looking right into your soul. This is a very complex and magnificent piece of work by a uniquely talented bladesmith.

^^^ Excellent image, completely conceived, shot and finished by Buddy. I work with the best. :D

I got started and literally said, "I've had it; take over." I went into the Show for 15 mins and when I returned he'd taken 20 or so images.

"You shoot it, you own it. Take the files home and show me your style." And he did.

I can't tell you how much I admire Buddy for his steady patience and his willingness to get the job done. At this show, I need a calming presence, and he's just that.

A thousand blessings back to you, man!

OK, since were' talking about Ray's work, I'll add this second image that I finished the show with. By that time, I decided I wasn't going to try to be clever. Three standalone images in one rectangle. Done.

More soon...

Haley DesRosiers has wowed us all with her bladesmithing talents, and even her photography. Wasn't I surprised and flattered when I got a note a month ago from her, asking if I would shoot her set at the Show.

How do you respond to a pretty female from Alaska...? You betcha! :p

Seriously, there were audible oohs and ahhs as I placed this set in some visual sequence. Here they are:

And here is the Grail with a delightful sheath:

All of Adam's knives will be shown sometime tomorrow. In full.

Speaking of accomplished Mastersmiths, Don Hanson III continues proving his Fighter prowess.

I love Ray's unique view at the world. Very out of the ordinary Goblin (even for my taste LOL) and Buddy you did an outstanding job shooting it!! Great images of a very cool knife.

I'm with you guys. Don's style is incredible and he always produces better and better pieces. Wow..! Those two fighters, especially the green/blue crackle one is one of my favorites. I wish it was mine so bad!

Thanks for the great pictures, when you live in Sydney Australia this is the best way to see the good stuff other than jumping on a plane headed for Blade.
