Knives of the Blade Show 2011 • Art, Classics, and Innovation

The kind comments and spectacularly talented company in this thread are truly humbling. Thankfully, Jim hides my flaws. Thank you, everyone.

Jim, lipstick?!! :D

John White has posted RogerP's 'Best Bowie - Blade 2011' in a standalone thread. As it should be!

John Cohea's work has us ALL oohing and ahhing. So cool! (This layout took just a bit of time and fussing. :D)

I'm REALLY happy for this previously unknown-to-me maker from up here in CT. Dave Loukides accepted his JS merit at the ABS banquet declaring 'Greek power'! ;)

From one of the long-time ABS Mastersmith's: J.R. Cook. Both of them heading to China soon to be followed with a large Jay Hendrickson piece at my home now.

Check out how nice this subhilt is from Canadian maker Alain Desaulniers:

Classics: Jerry Halfrich keeps you guessing on the styles.

Got a bunch more done and to do. Still working and awaiting some approvals.

that Cohea piece is amazing. My favorite Cohea to date. His take on the d guard is so wicked.

With John's table being next to Curt Erickson's, I got many chances to see all the stuff and speak at length with John. Great knives, wonderful appeal and fun talking about stuff in general.

More great stuff.. Wow.

Cohea's knife is just so very interesting.

That last Halfrich slippie is really giving me a case of the "wants". Just fantastic.

Good lord! As much as I love knives and all things sharp, and dream about making some myself, never have I dreamed of beauties like these. It always amazes me how the bar gets raised every year at the show. Especially drooling over the DesRosiers!

Coop, so many different kinds of knives, materials, and lighting, and after a few days you are able to post these finished pictures.. Awesome shots too, Coop.. The quality of the makers work came through great, and there sure is no shortage of craftmanship by these makers.. What a good job selecting what knives to post as well...Thanks, very enjoyable recap! Rich

I'm happy to have heard of him now, too. Very nice set of knives indeed.

Glad to see a shot og Cohea's terrific bowie - his whole table rocked.

Bruce Bump, MS has been wringing his hands in anticipation. So have we!

Kevin Evans passed his JS test easily. His instructions to us: "I want a different layout." This worked for me and him. :)

Scott McGhee has shown these knives to us here before. Like a great song, it deserves to be played over and over and over...

How many Journeyman Smiths are there from Canada? Paul Savage is among them.

He contacted me with this approval:
One thing the photo doesn't capture very well though is the STRESS and drops of SWEAT these submission knives cause all of these Journeyman Candidates. Maybe thats a good thing , because they are real nice just to look at now with a sense of satisfaction.

Tim Tabor passed his JS test last year. Look how smartly his path is taking him:

And a Bladesmith's bladesmith is the respected Brion Tomberlin, MS. He teaches, is a prolific guide on the ABS forums, and was asked to participate in the judging this year. I submit he is climbing the ABS ladder to the top.

Coop,

This thread is a service to the community!

Just in this last group, that massive, beautiful Bump, Scott McGhee's artistic lines, and the sweetest blade ever from Brion, join with a crop of nicely done JS blades.

Hooray for the makers, and thanks to Jim Cooper.

John

Jim, thank you so much for the kind words and the great picture. So many gorgeous knives, the level of talent shown here is amazing. From John's fantastic dogbone to Bruce Bumps amazing fighter, Adam and Haley's knives, just too much to look at in one reading. I always look forward to this thread.

Thank you again Jim.
Brion

I did get a chance to play with that big piece by Bruce - man, talk about making a lasting impression. Knife and scabbard really make for an exceptional combo.

That Tomberlin is, I believe, Brion's finest piece to date.

And all the new JS and MS members get a big salute from me - that is a lot of blood, sweat and tears and an accomplishment to be proud of and build on going forward. Goon stuff!

Bruce Bump ......... if you keep that up, eventually you're gonna make a name for yourself in this business! (laugh) That is truly a spectacular representation of your craft, complimented beautifully by Jere Davidson's very tasteful engraving. Jim Cooper, thanks for the 1000 words! Your images bring even more life to exceptional pieces like this.

Finally a good image of The Judge. As I told the owner earlier this knife will be judge and jury in any fight!! Somewhere around 18 inches, what would you expect!! The ivory is amazing, as is the knife. Great photo Coop!!

Marcel

Coop, you're an artist my friend. Thanks so much for sharing these incredible images.

Oh my goodness! Please keep them coming! I missed the show for the first time in 3 years! This really helps with not making it! You and Buddy are da "men"!

BTW, I want to make known that I size all of my web display images at 900 pixels wide for landscape view (wider) and 640 wide for portrait view (longer).

Unfortunately, all of the landscape view photos get resized down again by the new vBulletin forum software, which shrinks anything over 800, down to 800 wide.

What you are seeing is a smaller and less sharp version. If you really want to see the image as it was presented, right click it and open it in a new tab or browser.

This is why the portrait mode photos appear larger and cleared. Certainly on my end. (And a petition to BF to have the limit raised to 1024 would make MY day!) ;)

Regardless, there is still enough here for quite an impact.

I took a three hour Fathers-Day break, riding bikes with my 8-yr-old son. Enough knives already!

More later....
