Knives of the Blade Show 2013 • Art, Classics, and Community

Great work Coop!!

It's nice to get to see all the great knives that I wasn't able to see on the maker's tables. It was a pleasure working with you and Susan. I really appreciate you working with me on the photo composition. I'm very happy with how the photos of my cut-n-shoot came out.

Amazing photos as always Jim, thank you for sharing them all in one place for all to enjoy!

Edit: I have to say, I was lucky enough to hold a few of these knives in person. Your lighting brings out much more detail and color than the show lighting brought out! Bravo

holy crap! my mind is blown, far too much awesomeness in one thread to come away from without at least a little blood trickling out of my ears.
you should at least post a warning Jim, 'Beware, all ye who enter the thread of awesomenessss'...

You should go to Blade someday, Lorien.....that is what you get to see every year....a lot of awesomeness....those who go there know what to expect in a Blade Show photo thread....those that don't get to drool at the pretty pictures.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I consider myself lucky even to be able to drool over these threads!
I love the intrawebz :)

Great stuff. David`s ivory split ring guard piece is one I would have happily grabbed. And David Sharp is doing just ridiculously nice work.

Congrats to Coop Jr.!

Thanks for the fantastic pictures Coop! I saw these posted last evening and I will admit I welled up. I make knives for fun (love it) to have pictures of my stuff posted along side these makers...never imagined.

Even those who are at the Blade Show looking at all the knives they can don't get the look that Coop can provide.

The detail and beauty of Jim's photography adds a whole new dimension to the show.

I'll keep going back to Coop's photos to study Aaron Wilburn's and Sam Lurquin's five.

Thanks, Jim,

John

Lots of super-cool knives here. That one from Mr. White is very cool, and deserving of a pile of awards... but the "Best Bowie" award tells me that I know almost nothing about what characteristics define a Bowie. ;)
I really dig that Culver too.
Great photos Coop. I look forward to this every year.
Erin

This thread needs more pictures. I just received this one form Coop today. This is a pair of my Yakuza folders.
The top one has copper/niobium superconductor bolsters and thumb disc.
The bottom one has timascus bolsters and thumb disc.
Thank you for looking,
Chuck

Erin,

The Best Damascus and Best of Show were for the L-4 Dagger.

The Best Bowie was for this Feather/Stag Bowie. This one may have more of the characteristics of a Bowie.

John

Hi friends: Thanks again.

Chuck, that set of knives ROCK! (I prodded him again and again to return to making a couple of his Scagel fixed/folder replica's. If you don't know what I'm talking about, so much the point. As good as Charles Gedraitis' progression gas gotten, the Scagel tribute folders will have you staring and drooling!)

John White: Thanks for this 'minor' clarification. ^^ I didn't know the facts, and now I do. I look forward to your posting of Eric's award photo on that scrumptious Bowie!

Back on the game... I exercised this morning, went to breakfast with my buddies, and then settled in for a lonnnnng afternoon of editing. Thirty eight images today is enough to make you bleary. Almost everyone got back to me and barely any touch ups needed.

This one was presented to me and gave me pause and a wrong answer. Harvey Dean has spent time with Bill Ruple, and is yet another of his disciples. Props to STeven for the acquisition. Yes, if that pearl was any more alive, it would be swimming away. ;)

And another delivery to STeven from S.Africa. Neil Schutte shows what 'crisp' is.

Pardon my fingerprints. I was moving too quickly. :)

Shayne Carter has a good eye and a good hand.

Kevin Cross is a part time maker from my neck of the woods, in CT.

What you didn't see ^^^ above!

Ryan Weeks has been talking about this collaboration with Claudio Sobral for months. Here it is:
orig.jpg

Ryan made the guard and handle, and Claudio created the blade. Here's the mark:
orig.jpg

Speaking of collaborations, Jerry Halfrich made a simple lockback, and David Riccardo made it spectacular.
orig.jpg

Harry Holbrook only makes it look simple and easy. There is a lot of experience in this 'classic' three piece knife.
orig.jpg

Tony Hughes and Shayne are best buddies. They BOTH love them big Bowies.
orig.jpg

Tony wanted me to show his steel and the buttcap. Here's why:

Gary Martindale nicely executed what appears to be a Loveless 'Dixon' fighter.
orig.jpg

John Parks makes these wonderful period integrals, and you just have to like them.
orig.jpg

Nice materials, and a little tasteful spine fuller.
orig.jpg

Speaking of period knives: Peter Pruyn made this to replicate a mid-nineteenth century Bowie.
orig.jpg

Dietrich Podmajersky mixed a little W2 and wrought iron to craft this useful utility:

He's inching into larger knives....
orig.jpg

...and still a master at the delicate ones. :D
orig.jpg

Kenny Steigerwalt wanted both of these shot individually. I suggested they were more alike than different; put them together. We think it works!
orig.jpg

A VERY proportional clamshell Bowie by Brian Thie (pronounced 'Tee'. I had to ask. :)) I actually prefer the finished look on the back of the clam. That's an area of controversy.
orig.jpg

Brian does his own engraving, too. Sweet.
orig.jpg

It's not big on embellishment, it's just BIG. Brion Tomberlin rocks it.

I'm awaiting some approvals, and will continue more editing and posting tomorrow. Hope you are enjoying the ride.

Jim

Fabulous knives and fabulous images. Thanks Jim for assembling then all in one place for all to see.

Always wonderful to see your after-Blade images, Coop. It's especially great to keep updated, what with some of the newer makers' stuff.

Great looking knives, and photos! Thanks Coop, another excellent presentation.
David

Jim I see more of the knives of Blade on your thread than I so in person

Thank you
