Knives of the Blade Show 2013 • Art, Classics, and Community

I've been working all day long on editing, emailing, and starting prints. Susan has prepared the mailers. The show is barely 1/3 of our workload. The remaining work at the studio is formidable, and I'm sure appreciative that my clients can wait for my work. Quality takes time! :D

Let's resume:

Lance Abernathy and Sniper Bladeworks takes NO prisoners with this defensive set.

We met a wonderful senior maker for the first time: Joe Sangster. Simple and good stuff.

Someone YOU have all seen and admired brought me this parade of his work. Mark Knapp and his charming wife Angel bring a smile to our table, and probably to you face! :)
orig.jpg

(a VERY rare SBC criss-cross 'X' format. I have an aversion to this, but today I dropped my defenses. ;)
orig.jpg

Twice as nice?
orig.jpg

Three times a charm!

Jon Christensen, MS. A daring knife and scabbard needs a daring display. When I saw how smart this looked together, I allowed it was THE most visual presentation. Works for Jon and me! (That little hook is the 'frog' to hold it at belt height.)
orig.jpg

The closer you look, the better it gets. (I have been providing makers with these extra detail shots for years. Sometimes you have to see it closer and at a different perspective.)
orig.jpg

A gentleman's carry.
orig.jpg

Look at this great folder from Michael Vagnino, MS. Look at those scales. He tells me it's synthetic from a pool cue manufacturer!
orig.jpg

We haven't seen enough of Stephan Fowler's work lately. Here's the cure:
orig.jpg

You've seen tons of Keith Ouye's work from me. But.... not this type. I loved this lightweight performer.
orig.jpg

The Buchanan family is ALL about quality. Son of Thad, here's Zac Buchanan's latest. WOW!
orig.jpg

Continued...

Steve Randall got his JS credit last year. He's still moving upward! (That was his daughter Maggie who worked with Susan and Kyle Hanson this show.)
orig.jpg

Eugene from Olamic Cutlery distributes this quality folder and others, made in Russia.
orig.jpg

Anders Hogstrom was an opener in this thread, and continues to please.
orig.jpg

Is it any wonder that Ken Onion has gotten so popular? Those 'insets' are machined from the frame sides and inserted into the CF. Serious work.
orig.jpg

The client/collector who brought these to me stole this out of Ken's EDC pocket just for this shoot. We may see this sometime, too.

Rodney Watts has been making big strides in popularity for years. Here's why:

Again...

The first time I saw Andrew Meers' work, I was blown away. I believe he tutored under JD Smith for a period. Andrew was one of the talented new makers who passed his Journeyman Smith testing at this Blade. (I don't have that group shot.) This is his intriguing rustic folder set.
orig.jpg

Enrique Peña is familiar to most, and he brought the pinnacle traditional slipjoint: A five blade stockman with his own jigged bone! Such precision.
orig.jpg

Mace Vitale created this stunning quillion dagger.
orig.jpg

Again, look closely to see the level of work and his enviable steel.
orig.jpg

New to me, young maker Levi Graham surprised and impressed EVERYONE with this series of rustic heritage knives. Paul Long was in the room while I was shooting them and gave him highest of praise for his leather work. THAT'S a vote of approval. I think he's worked with John Cohea. It shows!
orig.jpg

A little rat tail hook!
orig.jpg

I love those crusty scales.
orig.jpg

Ask any photographer who's done these type sets and they will agree: Getting the fringe to lay well takes care.
orig.jpg

CJ Cai tells the stories of Diana and Poseidon on the Warren Osborne folder.
orig.jpg

Here he engraved this cigar tube on every surface. Magnificent!
orig.jpg

And a display box fit for a centuries of coveted ownership.

I'm done with the editing. You've now seen the show from MY visual perspective.

I'm going to post these on Facebook, the CKCA and soon, my website. We try hard. ;)

From all of us who worked this show with you: Myself, Susan, Kyle and Maggie; we appreciate your viewing.

Absolutely stunning work Coop. Your images are top shelf. There are some real beauties but with you magic touch they jump off the screen. Thank you for your hard work.

Chris

Wow, I gotta say... fantastic images (of excellent and worthy knives). This may sound crazy but it's like, at BLADE Show - in that cramped room with all the stress and hurry up, all the chaos and tension - it's a volcano. And your images are like the volcano's diamonds.;) Intense heat and pressure...
My 10 yr old son ran...
And he'll be kickin' your butt in four years! He's handsome and he's a competitor - like his dad

Holy smokes do I ever love that Jon Christensen piece. Mace's dagger is beautiful and this Levi Graham fellow is doing some super nice work.

Very nice photos and knives. I really like what you did with my Ruth Fighter. Thanks for being the man.

Yes, there is something for everyone, and no requirement to choose a fave.

"You cannot win if you do not play!" (That's the radio slogan for the New York Lottery.)

The same notion applies if you don't get shown. :(

Somehow in my haste I left out Kevin Casey's magnificent pearl folder. Let's enjoy it:

orig.jpg

Pink? Yes. Secure men aren't intimidated by 'feminine' colors. Especially when it looks SO good!

Coop

The pink background looks great with the pearl and the anodized blue liners and backbar. But don't ever let me catch you wearing a pink shirt Coop. Seriously.

^^^ LOL! So glad you live four hours away. I own two pink T's. BRIGHT PINK.

One was from a women's rowing charity event, and the other (plain, just purchased) compliments my flourescent orange and green hi-visibility workout T's.

Catch me if you can! :p

Coop

Jon -- if the piece of yours has not been sold, it sure would be nice to see in this weekend. Don't know how I missed seeing it. Wonderful knife and sheath.
