Knives vs guns when entering police dept

Might be the state and the size of the folder. While CA is generous wrt. knife laws, you are not allowed to carry a folder > 4" length inside a government building. Meaning you have to leave it outside of the building.

Years ago after working on my brothers truck we ran in town to the courthouse for a title. Our pockets were full of everything from wrenches to sockets, zipties and knives. The guard laughed and said he'd keep our tools there for us and handed us our pocket knives back.

The security theater at some courthouses is pathetic. The least they could do is put checkpoints past the administrative areas where people have to go that have no contact or connection with the actual courtrooms or prisoners.
Huge amounts of tax payer money was expended post 911 to basically beef up federal facilities , but most are still vulnerable to actual well equipped nutball terrorists .

But much safer from domestic disgruntled taxpayers .

Presumably , in the bushes ?

A couple years I went to the police department building renew my concealed carry permit. I went without a firearm but did have a folding manual knife. Upon entering the building, I dumped the contents of my pockets into the tray and slid it over to the other side of the metal detector. Behind the security area was a row of lots of little lockboxes for stowing handguns and it was marked as such. Guard picked up the knife, opened it, and told me I can't bring it in.

Me: "Err, could you stow it in one of those lock boxes?"

Guard: "No, that's only for guns."

Me: "So, you're saying I can walk in here with a gun, slide it over to you, and you stow it in one of those boxes?"

Guard: "Yes."

Me: "But not a knife?"

Guard: "Right."

Me: "Okay, so... pretend my knife is a gun." (I was trying to fish for a distaste of stupid rules)

Guard: "Can't do that."

Me: "I'm here to renew a carry permit. Are you sure you can't work with me here?"

Guard: "No."

So I sighed and walked back a couple blocks to my car, hid the knife away, and returned. I just thought that was very strange that I could go into a "secure" location with a gun and have it stowed upon entry, but couldn't do tThehe same with a knife.
Simple, the guy was a complete ass.
A few yrs ago, I donated $1000 worth of Spydercos to our local County Sheriff dept. They were like kids in a candy store. Most cops carry cheap knives, as they are used to dig into bags of drugs, dumps of gump, prying open a door..etc. and they won't bring it home but leave it in their locker.

Had a brick wall argument with an airport security Fudd many years ago, he didn’t know the rules on blade length and just felt that I had “no business with a knife like that!” (3” innocuous Al Mar folder). Then of course 9/11 happened, so any time I *have* to enter a government facility, airport, or bank, I make sure I’ve got nothing but my wallet and phone.

I have a similar story.

My take on the topic is: Everyone is looking for a reason to be outraged and judge you. Government buildings are the best place to do that because the setting carries weight, is heavily policed, and everything is on camera.

I will disagree with the common sentiment here. Carry your knife anyway. Carry you largest, most favorite knife right in there. If they get upset and won't work with you, fine. Make an issue anyway. Cause a stress and problems in their day because you want fair treatment. You want them to lock your knife up in the box and give it back to you because that is their job. Make them do it, or at least make them wish they did. This is freedom type stuff. Never tuck your tail for the government or scared, offended people.

Well, safer from the taxpayers who actually obey the arbitrary and capricious rules. Not safer from people who don't obey rules, like the people who are willing to murder, commit arson, etc.

This is the way. A right not exercised will soon be a right lost.

A couple years ago? It's time to let it go.

The officer probably hears the same argument from 15 people a day and doesn't want to play the game.

Can I put my lighter in a box?

No it's just for guns.

Can I put my lunch in the box?

No it's just for guns.

My Starbucks?

No it's just for guns.

Vape mod?

No it's just for guns.

Poodle?

No it's just for guns.

The security in most places are there just to harass ordinary people ! They do nothing to protect building they secure and most time they are stupid like box full of rocks / if i remember correctly how someone here said to me 🤣 /
Do you want to hear story how I entered the court only with the car keys in my pocket and I came out with a big ax in my hands in front of that stupid security personal??
I had an appointment with one judge , friend of mine .To finish some work for me on some documents for a relative........On enter......beep beep! It's just the car keys, I tell them .No, come back leave that keys and walk through that detector again! WTF is wrong with you , you know me very well I said to them ! No ! Back and follow the rules like everyone ! Ok...................I do what they ask and went to the office of the judge I was looking for.Door open , my friend judge not there , the window is open, there are no bars on window , office on first floor, public street next to the window. I ask in other office and I was informed that he was in a courtroom for a trial and to come back in an hour....
Same ***** on enter with security ! And again I haven't finished the job. Judge still on trial .On the way out , security warned me to respect order like everyone else /they know me very well/ and not to cause them any trouble since they are doing the job for which they were paid ??? You do your job by harassing me? We'll see how you do the job when I get back ! My father lives close to the court so i drive there , took his big ax and put it on the back seat of my car .After one hour I go in court , but this time I parked the car behind the court , where the offices are , WITH OPEN windows on ground floor ! I took ax and put it on windows of office of my friend/judge . at the entrance again the same procedure, the rules are the rules!! Ok , no problem !Then I went to the office, took the ax, put it on my shoulder and come back to those idiots.......they didn't open their mouths for two minutes ,they just stared at me !! I walk out , leave ax in my car and come back ....passed with the keys and they didn't say a word ! Most likely they still don't know what and how it happened!
Long story for me and my English , i hope it make sense

You see a lot of pepper spray and cheap knives stashed in planters around the courthouse. They won't allow then inside.

UGH! Your story is one of many!

In most cases, the building is never even close to secure. Too many people are allowed to bypass the metal detectors one way or another, even if "they" won't tell you that it's possible. Plus all of the law enforcement and many judges choose to be armed on the allegedly secure side of the theater, so there are always going to be weapons on that side.

was too much like a brass knuckle they said.
This is SO precious . :p

So the assumption here seems to be that you are gonna take down a cop shop / court house with a ring . o_O

This kind of crap is beyond ridiculous , IMO .:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

This is just pure police state BS . The founders would have been horrified .
