Knives & Watches

I have seen alot of posts out there with BF members mentioning or selling higher end watches.

I happen to LOVE knives and like nice watches as they really are the only male jewelery I wear. I picked up a Movado Linio a few months back which I also LOVE, fits very nicely into my daily White Collar rags.

So I was wondering if Knives and Watches go hand in hand (no pun intended :D ) for most of you...

...and if so, what do you have to compliment your knives :p

Reaper;

As a man, I enjoy many "male" things: knives, guns, watches, beautiful women, and fine cars to name just a few.

Unfortunately, I do not yet have a fine watch. I have been strongly considering a Breitling but they are a touch expensive. If my father found out I bought myself a $2000 watch, he would be a *little* upset! I want one SO badly, though! But then there's also the problem of WHICH one to get???!!! Breitling has SO many beautiful watches, I could NEVER decide!!!

Have also considered a Stainless Rolex (You have to be over 40 and wealthy to wear a solid gold watch).

*sigh* so many wants, so little $$$. In a few more years...

Dr. Jones. I think that many knife collectors have chosen the hobby because they are perfectionists, who crave precision, perfection, and appreciate the skillful utilization of rare and fine materials, and thus precision and beauty come so nicely together in a fine knife. Fine watches have all of these things, and are therefore a satisfying pursuit/hobby for perfectionists as well, though i would say that it is easier to find absolute perfection in a knife than a watch simply because the watch is a far more complex mechanism, but both objects, more than most fine collectables, do lend themselves to extreme precision, the use of fine materials and thus, its no coincidence that high-end knife collectors also may have an affinity for fine watches.

That being said, you should check out the Breitling Chrono-Avenger. It is of course an automatic movement, a certified swiss chronometer in fact, just like the more famous (infamous?) Rolex. It is a huge, but very appealing watch, beautifully crafted of high-grade Ti, and it can be had brand new for $1500, though retail is about $2500 i believe. Ahhh, the wonders of the internet. :) Also worth looking into are the VERY fine watches by Baume Et. Mercier, the Capeland series are awesome, beautifully crafted timepieces which also can be found in the $1500 range (Retail is about $2500). Cant go wrong with an Omega Seamaster for just over $1,000. If youre a sucker for utilitarian, quasi-military, overengineered designs, check out the German watches by "Sinn". Like an MP5, only its a watch. :) So, to quickly answer your question, it takes the same sort of nutcase to like each respective object, but i wouldnt have it any other way. I love em both.

drjones, here is my everyday and dress watch. i also have a breitling duograph limited edition of 1000 pieces world cup of aerobatics.

Neil Ostroff, thanks for that elishewitz site i did know he was into watches but did not know he made them also the same for rings they are awesome.

As I sit here admiring the Omega Seamaster Pro Chronometer that my wife got me for my 40th this past Saturday, your question hits home. I thought that once I got a nice watch, I could go on with life as a normal person and just be obsessive about pocket knives.

It seems that this is not the case. While I dearly love my new SMP, I have suddenly developed a case of the hots for a Breitling Blackbird with the polished bracelet. I'm afraid of where this is going.

I got an automatic instead of a quartz and have been wearing it every day, but I can see how you might end up with a couple of them. If they're all automatics, all of a sudden you need one of those auto winder devices to keep all your automatics wound up.

Mixing fine knives with fine watches seems like mixing bleach and amonia. A nearly fatal combination.

Help.

Fortunately for my wallet, my disease(s) is still in its infancy stages (Benchmades & Seikos). :D

Next "big" weapon purchase will probably be a Glock and/or Benelli.

Next "big" other purchase will be a new Honda V5.

i like precision made stuff (ie glock/SIG/darrel ralph/bud nealy/emerson/rolex/TAG)

i like a SS GMT11 master rolex w/burgundy/black bezel and oyster band (would like a jubilee band too) my self

If I were a wealthy man, I'd purchase quite a few more vintage and new watches. As it is, I only have my grandfather's fully restored Omega Seamaster DeVille,
myomega.jpg

and my IWC Auto Fliegerchrono
FLIEGER.JPG

which is on my wrist every day.
Mechanical/Automatic movement watches fascinate me. Once you see a balance wheel rotating back and forth in perfect precision, you'll understand the fascination.

I also own an Omega seamaster pro. It's the midsize stainless model and I've worn it daily for two and a half years. I think the connection with this forum comes with the learning curve that is involved. We all learned or are in the process of learning what makes something a better quality tool. Some of us have done this with watches as well. I'm also fond of fountain pens and learning all I can about those.

Don't get me started on the Breitling. That was one of the brands I was considering before the Omega purchase. At this point I'm okay with only one watch for everyday wear...
Well, maybe a gshock for the next canoe trip.;)

Megalobyte: VERY well put!!! I too enjoy all fine, high-end, precision objects, be they cars, guns, knives, whatever. I'm an equal opportunity collector!:D Thanks also for the reccommendation of "Sinn" watches. Could you please post a link to a site for them? I'd appreciate it!

Also, funny you should mention the Chrono Avenger; that's EXACTLY the watch I've been eyeing for quite some time now!!! And I've actually seen 'em on ebay for around 1200 or so!!!
 However, I think that part of the pleasure of having such a fine watch is the experience of purchasing it in an equally fine jewelry store, where one is guaranteed of the watch's authenticity and warranty. Oh well...
But there are SO many Breitlings that I want!!! I'd HAVE to go to a store just so I could see and feel them all in person.

Krangle: You are a LUCKY, LUCKY man!!! I'm envious!!! Wear your beauty with pride!!! (As if you don't already!;) ) Have any pics of your other ltd. edition??? :D

Thanks you two!!!

Didn't know there were so many Breitling fans here.

My first "nice" (pricey) watch was a Breitling Duograph, black dial, dual time-zones, two date indicators, and a day/night indicator. Still my favorite, and I rarely see any others :)

I like both knives and watches (and fine firearms!) Here's a few of my favorites:

Not the best picture I ever took, but it shows my Johhny Stout custom double action tactical folder (the prototype for a numbered series he did), my Rolex SS/18K Submariner, and my Wilson Combat CQB. Like many others here, I appreciate well engineered and finely crafted toys. (I wish I could take better pictures.) I also have a Rolex TT Datejust and some other gent's folders for more formal wear.

Zytel handles go well with G-Shocks.

Good quality quartz movements (Seiko, Citizen)go well with Spydercos and Benchmades.

Automatics go hand in hand with the finer folders.

Got a Breitling for my High School graduation but where a Soviet made VOtok Tank Commander normally.

This is my favorite duo. I know nothing expensive (less than 500.00 USD for both)... but I like them :).

I collect chrono's and have the Avenger as well as several Tutimas, several Omegas.

The Breitling Avenger's titanium is softer than many other watches and therefore more prone to scratching. The bracelet also exhibits quite a bit of stretch after some wearing.

Now that I've got the SMP, I'm probably not likely to get a Breitling soon as the house needs new windows before any more big toys get bought. But of course a man can dream.

Like you guys I really appreciate precision mechanisms and devices and am generally interested in widgets of all sorts. Unfortunately when I find a new type of widget, I figure that there has to be a varety of that type of widget and of course one must be better designed than the others. This leads to many hours of research which result in a purchase that leave most of my friends scratching their heads. Once the purchase is made, you find out that while the recently purchased widget might on paper be a better widget than all the rest, one of the other widgets in that class has certain desireable traits (missing in the one you already bought)of it's own necessitating yet another head scratching purchase.

Don't even ask about my wife's take on all this. I just point to her purses and shoes and she quiets down a bit. Anyone know who this " Kate Spade" is that she keeps talking about?

If you guys are as bad as I am about this stuff, I'm sure you've all found www.candlepowerforum.com right? It's for flashlight geeks.

Will somebody PLEASE tell me how a basic user can post pics. I've asked before and was always told you have to be a premium or gold member to post pics but I see a lot of basic members posting in this thread.
