Knives- What is the big deal?

Not my original quote but it sums it up for me. Knives are "Part tool, part toy, and part work of art"

Say's it all.....

Short: Endorphins

Like any addiction, there is an endorphin rush when fed, then a drop afterwards that causes a sort of depression. Just as some folks are addicted to food, sex or drugs, we are continually seeking the next high. For some, it's the search and discovery of the next great thing, or it's finding a long-desired missing piece of a collection, others it's just seeing pictures of really cool things.

I think we all are just using our historical dependence on knives as justification for the object of our addiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm sure the flashlight folks use our historical dependence on fire as justification, or for watches, the need to know the changing of time, as related to survival. Or, for purses (or maxpedition bags, backpacks, etc.) as a need to have something to gather things needed to survive. Sure, the basis of our addiction is rooted in almost genetic predispositions towards survival, but the biological response to the rush of achieving goals is what keeps us coming back for more than our minimal needed requirements.

I think it's been nailed down by the majority of the folks responding. It's an innate need that is satisfied by a man-made object that brings about a good feeling.

Anyway, this is just a bunch of B. S. that I made up on the spot.:D

Wow, some of you guys are really complicated and deep.

I'm a very simple kind of guy so for me it's very simple- Knives are good for cutting things and I think they're cool. Period.

Do ya ever think you might be putting too much thought into something. ;)

I think I heard once that too much time spent on self-analysis is an unhealthy obsession unto itself.

Why do people collect stamps? Or coins? Or rocks? Minitures? Cars? Guns? Pens? Flashlights? Etc...

Personally, I got into knives when I was 5 or 6. Dad carried one, so did his dad, and so did his dad. At that point in your life your dad is the coolest guy ever, and having a knife meant you were cool like dad.

Its a simple and elegant tool, its also in our genes.

I've come to the conclusion that the attraction to knives is intrinsically primal instinct. Cutting tools are definitely what enable our species to take control of our environment and dominate all other species.

We aren't particularly fast or strong, we don't have claws or huge teeth, and we aren't covered by fur, scales, or resilient skin. With a highly developed brain and dexterous hands we can create cutting tools that enable us to feed, shelter, clothe, and protect ourselves. I agree that it's in our genes!

Because they're SOOO different from each-other.
There's alot more to it than just what it looks like.
Different grinds, different shapes.
Craftsmanship.
"The original multi-tool" ......kinda.
Plus, it is knowledge that alot of people don't have. It makes you look smart when around knife-notters. :D

Like y'all have said, man has used knives for thousands of years. I think real men have a subconsciousness need to have a lot of nice knives. Lately I'm finding it hard to justify any more knives, like 15 folders and 10 fixed blades is all you really need, I think what I need now is some swords... I have no need for a sword but our ancestors did and it is ingrained in our very being to have swords.

Hey powernoodle what is that dark blue knife with the bail dead center of that photo? Can I see some more pics of that piece?

I agree with what stabman said - knives are cool!!! GRRRR!

But they also can be a powertrip and that's why i pack mine away, conceal them most of the time except when and where i feel safe i will show the pocket clip at times or even strap on a fixed blade (rarely). Also agree with the primitive connection which [at least for me] means alot.

Thank you for taking the time to comment Daniel Dorn. That was well thought out and insightful. In my opinion, spot-on.

When I was a kid I used to go to the cutlery place and look at all the folders. I never had the money to buy any of them. Now some 25 years later I still like looking at them but now I have the money to buy them as well.

Don't know what it is but I just like compact functional gadgets. Multi tools, knives, flashlights, watches. I've always been someone who likes to be prepared. I think that weighs in a lot on why I like this stuff.

Anyways, I'm sure the answer to this question is much like why my wife owns 20 purses that all seem to look exactly the same to me.

Knives have been my obsession since early childhood, flipping past pages in the childrens Bible to look at the pictures of the Romans swords.

Every blade I come into contact with undergoes the deepest scrutiny.

Knives are mans oldest tool, all other tools were born from the knife. Everything we are, or will be stems from the edge.

We are all children of the blade.

Well, like Tyler Durden used to tell me, "deliver me from Swedish furniture, but let me keep my knives." As far as I'm concerned that explains it pretty nicely.

in the words of Conan's father!
We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts.
[Points to sword]
Conan's Father: This you can trust.

.......or maybe we just like them (GRIN)
