Share some stories about knives you owned, and have given away.

I generally give knives to people who I appreciate. Ones I don't have use for, I have given away to random people on forums.

I gave a Case pen knife to a coworker who was retiring in the Philippines. I thought it would make a nice gentlemen's knife. It was in CV, so I hope it did OK in the humid tropical climate. I have given away two Victorinox Classics, one to my good friend, and another to a coworker who was admiring my knife. They are just handy to have around. Last time I went camping, a stranger helped me when my stove caught fire, soI gifted him my Vic Camper.

During the pandemic, I gave away a SRK-compact, Buck Vantage, and Buck 302 Solitaire on BCUSA because I was slightly losing my mind, like a lot of folks. Kinda wish I hung on to that 302, but I have plenty of knives.

Knives are my go to purchases for gift giving, it is a tradition that I started with my kids, nephews, nieces, my dad, and anyone else that I know enjoys knives. That’s a long various list, but I think we are talking more along the lines of randomly giving away a knife or our own. Off the top of my head:

Spyderco Delica
Spyderco ARK
Cold Steel Tuff lite
Cold Steel Pro Lite
Mora Companions
ESEE Izula (stainless and carbon)
ESEE Candiru
LT Wright Frontier Valley
Ontario RAT 2
CRKT M16
Kabar Dozier
Buck 112 Slim Select
Buck Paklite
Enzo Neck Knife
Various Swiss Army Knives

That’s all I can think of right now. As far as purchases for gifts, everyone I buy for will end up with at least an ESEE, Becker, Buck, LT Wright, SAK’s over the years.

I have give away a lot of knives, primarily to family members and coworkers. I have given SAKs to my son-in-law and a good friend. I have also give other knives to several coworkers.

Funny this topic would come up, as I was just thinking about this.

I've given away a lot of knives over the years, but the story behind this one just recently became more relevant to me.

I acquired a Parker brand boot knife identical to the one below in the mid 1980's. I left home at 16, lived on the street on and off for awhile, and during that time that knife was my constant companion.

Several years later, in 1995, a friend did me a big favor, and out of gratitude, I gave him the knife. He had really liked the knife, so it was the best thing I could think to give him.

My thinking at the time was "It's a Parker, an inexpensive, mass-produced knife. I'm sure I'll be able to find another one to replace it someday".

Wrong.

I got internet in 2002, and that year I started searching the net for another one of these. I searched regularly, year after year, something I've spoken of a few times on this forum in the past. But I never even found a single picture of one.

Until a few days ago. After more that 20 years of regular searching I finally found a picture of one, the picture below. I still can't believe I finally found it. For me, looking at that pic is like looking at a genuine picture of Bigfoot, or some other rare, almost mythological thing. And it sure brings back memories.

20+ years of searching, finally over. I thought about contacting the owner about buying it, but I don't really need it, and "need" is something I consider before buying anything these days. Just finding this picture, and ending my search, is satisfaction enough for me :) .

It is funny this just came up. Two weeks ago I noticed my coworker did not have a pocket knife, so the following day I brought him a NIB Buck Juno.

Within minutes I look over and his hand are covered in blood as are the hand tools and floor. He had cut himself twice in that time and said he didn't feel it right away because of the sharpness. I was kind of surprised because he works with sharp and dangerous tools on a daily basis. My guess is he was unfamiliar with a sharp folder.

I feel a bit bad but I did chuckle a little at the end of the day.

I've never given away any knives. No one to give them to and most are too expensive to give away if I did

In all seriousness, I've given away alot (mostly thanks to generous bundle deals I get off here). I'll categorize as below:

Benchmades: <5
Spydercos: ~10
CiWEvi: ~20
CRKT: ~30
SAKs: lost count
Old kitchen knives: ~20
No name/junk knives: I'm a good friend
Really expensive knives: 1 hinderer, it was not appreciated.

I've given away dozens of Buck folders to co-workers over the years......

no special stories just seen too many keys used and old kitchen knives to open boxes and cut things in the shop warehouses when they lose their box cutters......over the years....so I keep some slim selects and various budget Buck folders to hand out....

I want to be your co-worker!

In all seriousness, I've given away alot (mostly thanks to generous bundle deals I get off here). I'll categorize as below:

I've thrown in a few cheap knives (that I thought that I couldn't sell or that weren't worth trying to sell) in w/certain deals but I don't consider that "giving" a knife away. And, I've sold off a lot of knives in cheap bundles but I've never bought any knives that way.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. Alot of folks bundle a bunch of knives. Sometimes I see a few in the bundle I wanted, I'll keep those and give the rest away. Mostly cheaper (but still good) knives.

A Gordo in 26C3 high carbon steel with sheephorn for the handle. This was one of my own personal EDCs. I gave it to a young man that was helping on our ranch. I'll often give my old knives to young guys that might not be able to afford one of my knives. He even wore it to his wedding, when he married our daughter:

I have given away lots of knives through the years- typically to people I thought would appreciate them. Most recently I gave my TK Steingass Black Thunder to a great guy who left the state. Another really good guy I worked with wanted a ‘fighting knife’ so I gave him my Randall #14.

When I have a junkie knife, too junkie to even give to my kids. I take it to work leave it on a shelf in the stock room. Its always gone next time I check. Nobody ever posts a lost and found note or anything. Lol. Jokes on them its a turd.

I like to give knives to guys on the job. Good solid coworkers that do a good job and aren’t blue falcons or backstabbers, pun intended. I mainly give Victorinox, Buck, Case, etc. My good friend of 20+ years who is our lead driver trained me on the job when I left law enforcement. I gave him a big Camillus VG10 tanto blade knife. He leaves it in his Peterbilt for heavy cutting and still carries his wobbly, broken tip, rusted Old Timer. He’s rough on his knife/screwdriver! Our boss, who is more like a lifelong friend than a boss, I’m going to give him a vintage Buck 303 soon. He doesn’t carry a knife but he’s an all around outdoorsman and he’s taught me a lot on the job and has turned into a very trusted and valued friend as well. As far as birthday and Christmas gifts, I generally gift my dad and brother and my sons knives of all kinds. I get my boys more affordable but quality knives these days and spend more money on ones for dad/brother. If I get a knife off the big auction site and it comes with a cheapie, I touch it up and give it to one of the boys when it’s my weekend to have them. I get lots of joy from giving knives. I even gave one to my fiancée’s ex husband. We get along pretty good and so I gifted him a KaBar folder in D2 that I’d put a high polished hair popping edge on. He took it with a funny look on his face and never mentioned it again. We’re polar opposites so I wasn’t surprised.
