Knives you won't buy (and why)

Okay. Then if that's the case....they aren't a smart enough company to create original designs?

?? lol

I prefer a company like ZT to collaborate with great designers instead of putting out a ton of goofy looking knives that no one will ever buy like most of the other brands.

And nearly every major company collaborates with designers, so if you don't like ZT, I guess you don't like Benchmade & Spyderco (there's a lot more)

If you want 100% American made and 100% original designs then Emerson is for you (which is why they're my favorite brand)

Besides, you do know ZT is just a branch of KAI witch is Kershaw, right? Kershaw puts out plenty of original designed knives, not always the best material but when they make an original high end knife, its pretty damn awesome.

Same reason crkt, TOPS, spyderco, benchmade, kabar- basically most major brands use "high name" designers... not only does it provide a more affordable version of what is out of reach to most people, but it also expands their market to fill the gap between "high end" and "cheaper" knives. It's a brilliant move, but that doesn't mean they aren't smart enough to design their own. But think about it, if you're using a design (which is essentially the endorsement of your product by the designer), that means your product is pretty high quality or the designer wouldn't let you use his design and risk his reputation, would they?

Beat me to it!

Another knife I won't by is anything with a combo edge, because I'm not a fan of serrations and they put them right in the blades sweet spot.

Don't like chisel grinds, overly thick blade stock, dainty tips, locking mechanisms requiring feats of acrobatics to use (I'm looking at you, CRKT), and anything over a few ounces.

Tried an m16 I think it was. Needed three hands to close it

That's pretty much my limit too. I'd top out at $200. You can get some really really nice folding knives and excellent fixed blade knives in that $150-200 price point and frankly, FOR ME it's the point of diminishing returns. Anything after that and you're paying for craftsmanship, collectibility, artistic embellishment, etc... that doesn't necessarily add utility. Those are all fine and i do see the improvements. I don't think I'd get more enjoyment from a CRK or a custom than I would from, lets say, a Spyderco Chaparral with titanium handle and CTS-HXP which can be had for half the price.
Again, that's just me. I know a lot of people pay a lot more, and if it means they spend their own money to get the knife they want, who am I to criticize?

Agreed on all points.

Same here. For me, $200 is about my limit for knives. And on the other end of the scale, I also won't buy knives from junk brands like Tac Force or Frost Cutlery, cause even if they do a design I like(which is rare) I simply don't have any trust in their quality(low edge holding I can put up with on a cheap knife, but when I don't trust the lockup, that's a deal breaker). Other than price/quality, the only real matter to me is rather it falls into my personal aesthetical tastes. I don't like combo edges, but it's not a deal breaker, I don't prefer metal handles typically, but it doesn't stop me from owning Leeks and various others, I will never buy something with orange handles if any other color is available, but if I want the design and orange is the only option(ie, the Svord Kiwi Machete), I'll go for it, etc.
