Knives you won't buy (and why)

But I agree on the maker/manufacturer and the ravenous enthusiasts that follows said maker/manufacturer being a factor in whether or not to purchase a knife or any product for that matter.

Some guys factor that kind of stuff in and others don't give a flying fart about anything but what is in their hand. To each their own i guess.

I'm saying that for some, the character of the maker is a deal breaker. For some it is the country of manufacture. For some it is a certain type of lock. Or grind. Or blade shape, etc etc etc.

And some people have no deal breakers. But I am not implying that if someone doesn't care about, for example, character of the maker, then they dont care about anything.

That said, sooner or later, somebody in this thread will probably get bent outta shape about somebody else's deal breaker, and let us know all about it.

For me it is any liner lock/frame lock is unacceptable as there are good locks available that do not require you using two hands to close or placing your hand in front of the blade to close. That said I may like the same companies fixed blade offering. I also do not get into the, for lack of a better description, Mall Ninja cheep stuff. I have a beautiful S-curve blade but would not seek out another as I have a heck of a time sharpening it. Most of what many call "Fantasy Knives" as they may be interesting to look at but I have no desire to own one. I take any knife at face value meaning, if I like it then that is where I am. Price is what they want and if I want it then that is what it would cost. Having said that I then have to decide if it means that much to me as most times it will not.
Frank.

I wasn't implying that either and I didn't assume you did.

I take many things into account including the kind of person the maker is. I may not agree with people who don't share my beliefs but I understand were all different. I don't lose sleep over other peoples choices that's for sure.

My examples were polarizing but not meant to be the only too options, just broadly stating how different all of our stances are and can be.

Manix's. I actually held it, didnt like it. Ended up buying it anyways and didnt like it again so I returned it. Its way to wide as wide as a cell pone and I dont like the lock. Beats up my hand. Most importantly the lock is firm cuasing my grip to change with the hilt of the handle going in the center of my palm. It slipped out once and I almost sliced through all 4 fingers. Never again. Dont like the lock, size or grip.

Also I dont like the brand cold steel, I feel you get inferioir parts and steel for a premium. Kershaws I want to like but they always feel quality wise what I paid for them. Not a bad thing but it gripes me. I do love ZT though. Ill pay more for a similarly styled knife with better fit finish and materials any day of the week.

Of course!

That said, what I don't like is perfectly reasonable.

What you don't like is nonsense.

:D

Any by the way....recurves. :barf:

It seems the longer you collect/use knives the larger this list gets:
Chisel grind blades
Tanto blades
California clip blade
Liner lock traditional
Recurved blades
Serrations
Coated blades
Flippers
Anything made by Strider
Butterfly knives
Assisted opening knives
Automatic knives

Features that prevent me from buying, eh?

-Frame/liner locks
-Gaudy designs
-Half-serrated blades
-Cheap steel (ones that don't have their own name essentially)
-Stonewash finish
-Traditionals (classy, a bit too old fashioned imho)
-Knives with drilled out holes through the blade (Spdyerco design would be awesome without that hideous gore through the blade)
-Blade less than 3/4 the length of the handle
-Knives with significant history of poor QC (emerson, gerber)
-Wooden/bone/etc. handles

Serrations/combo edge
Chisel ground
Losing interest in anything with plastic/Mylar washers
Made in China(honestly refrain from anything made outside U.S. these days, prefer to support U.S. companies whenever possible)
Decorated knives/pocket jewelry(I admire the workmanship but it's not for me. That being said, a Native American lg Sebenza would still be most welcome in my modest collection)

I am not a fan of liner locks. But I have some. Just prefer a different locking mechanism.
Partially serrated blades..... I want plain or fully serrated.

I am a poor guy and it may change in the future but for now I will never buy a knife of $500 or more no matter how good it is.

This! I'm DONE with smooth aluminum or other smooth scales that don't provide sufficient grip - and yes! I may need to use my knife in the rain or other damp conditions, so just because it has reasonable grip when I take it out of the box on the couch in ideal conditions... that doesn't count.

... metal grip panels that are uncoated, smooth and slippery ...

• Knives with black coating
• Anything with a skull on it
• Overly large and heavy knives
• Knives with wave features
• Karambits

Well I'm glad we agree what I don't like is perfectly reasonable and what you like is nonsense... And some folks think you're abrasive:p

I like the way a recurve looks but not a fan of sharpening them.

For me, compound grinds are:barf:

All my frame and liner locks need only one hand to open/close. I do occasionaly get my fingers in the way though.

Basically any knife sold at the big box stores (Home Dep. Lowes etc,). Some of the Kershaws are not too bad, but the SOG stuff is shameful.
