Ever gifted anyone a knife? What was it, who was it, and what was the occasion?

Yesterday I gifted my dad a yellow Mini Griptilian for his birthday. I told him it cost me pennies so that he keeps it on him and uses it like it's intended to be used. I gave him my Boker Subcom Titan once and he refuses to carry it because it's too pretty and he doesn't want to lose it, so he's been carrying around a combo edge company knife he got 15 years ago that's had up and down blade play for the last 10 years with the weakest liner lock you'd ever have seen. The damn thing closes on his fingers if he isn't really careful, and doesn't hold an edge for poop. Now he's got a nice knife that he'll abuse and I'll even keep it sharp for him. :) The Mini Grptilian was actually the exact same size as the last knife he carried, and its bright yellow colour gets by everyone he's showed it to. No one can tell it's a knife until he starts to cut things with it- which is really good because he keeps his knife on his key chain witch he lets hang off his pants.

It feels good to make sure the people you love have proper sharp things on them.

I gave a very close friend a mini-grip (that he lost about a year later) and then a fullsize grip to replace the mini. I had picked them both up used here on the forum for myself, but gave to him when he expressed an interest in knives.

I got my co-workers Victorinox classics... because they are so darned useful. I made sure they were shaving sharp, too. One of them proceeded to cut himself with my gift.

I have given several knives out to friends that did not EDC a knife. However, specifically for a gift, I have given my brother in law a kershaw tremor, and a BK14 with g10 scales, (both on seperate occasions) and I gave my grandfather a buck 110 to replace the awful butter-knife-dull, pakistani-made, flea market knife he carried.

I've given knives to several gents. Two stand out to me as they brought such a strong response from the recipient.

One of the associate pastors at my church led a marine rifle company in Vietnam. He'd had a KaBar style knife while there and had given it to one of his men when his tour was up. He knows my love of cutlery. A couple of times when we would talk knives, he had mentioned that knife. My church does not celebrate Christmas, but we do give gifts at Tabernacles. One year I gave him a KaBar Marine knife. His eyes got really wide, followed by several non-church (but very Marine) exclamations when I gave it to him. That response will be in my memory for the rest of my life.

The second is a yellow Buck Stockman. I gave one to a gent in his 60'S. His eyes teared up and he told me that he had never really known his Father and that his Grandfathers had held that position in his life. He told me that they both had carried yellow traditional knives and that he had always meant to get one. Mercy.

Every family member or close friend that leaves for the military or mission field, I send off with an SAK. If my count is accurate, I just gave my 30th away last week to my niece who left for the Army.

I gave one of my friends a spyderco d'allara when he was getting ready to deploy to afghanistan.

gave one of my nephews a SYKCO DMDC just for the hell of it, and an ontario TAK-1 for his birthday.

should've remembered to attach coins to the knives, because I'm not on speaking terms with either now.

That's funny...

I've given lots of knives away, I mean sold them

When I first got back in to knives some years ago it was 'cause of this article

http://www.primitiveways.com/pt-antlerhandleknife.html

I'd been to various festivals and seen shoddy knives going for much money and thought "I could do this". I made many antler handled knives by this and other methods and traded the "not best" ones for more antler or gifted them. By the way, I think boiling works best 'cause I think the antler beginning to decay would weaken it more than anything.

Then I went through a period of Opinel modding. Got to where I could go to work and mod an Opi in 10 minutes flat. Quick belt sander work followed by using a long strip of emory cloth like you were shining shoes on the knife clamped upright in a vise.

Gave many away and didn't make people "buy" them at first. Ended up not speaking to a couple people. They were buttheads anyway, and there were others who I kept on getting along with but still...

I tape a penny to any knife I gift now, and actually make people give me a different penny. It's a nice bit of folklore anyway and when you explain that you don't want your friendship "cut" it's a nice thing.

I gave away a Needs Work and a Shallot to two different forum members, because they didn't have any Kershaws or just started to acquire some. I did it in the spirit of ThomasW giving away knives to some other members.

I've gifted a Large Sebenza 21 to our own Gundude73.

I've given away a Paramilitary 2, a Gayle Bradley, Kershaw Turbulence, and some others on my YouTube channel.

Kershaw Rainbow Chive to my daughter.
Spyderco Sage 2 and a Buck 112 to her twin brother.
Leatherman Skeletool to my oldest son.
Spyderco Delicas to my girlfriend, her daughter and my barber.
Becker BK2 and BK9 to my best friend.
Alan Davis Misery Whip to another friend.
CRKT Ken Onion Ripples to two other friends.

Last night I gave my neighbor a knife I recently made. He gave me some steel a while back so i told him i'd make him one. Told him to use it and not to let it be a shelf queen. I need to know if it will hold an edge.

I usually give either books or knives/multitools as gifts. Quite a few of my friends are knife enthusiasts and many of my male relatives like knives as well.

Small multitools and SAKs are great for people who aren't into knives, I've given out more Vic Classics than I can remember, and well as a few LM Micras and Squirts. People end up finding them quite useful and it's an affordable way to keep them from borrowing my knife or tool. :)

I gave a buck rush to a friend at college a while back (his wallet hates me because he is probably gonna get into knives now). I gave my cousin a skyline fixed blade when he told me to get him something from cabelas (He was joking so I did it....if he had been serious and demanding I wouldn't have), he was a bit shocked at that one...

I bought a bunch of Kershaw Leek blems in an auction on ebay for cheap, and started giving them away to friends and family. It's not super expensive, and giving people such a fun knife for their first one often gets them interested in knives. I also made my dad a frankenLeek with a different blade, and an STR deep carry clip for his birthday. I'm giving it to him in 2 weeks.

Years ago my grandpa gave me an Uncle Henry stockman. I decided to give it to my dad for his birthday one year as he use to talk about a similar knife he had. Reportedly ( he never admitted it to me ) he was playing with it at work and cut his finger to the bone and no longer wanted to carry it afterwards.

The other is a safety orange Izula from knifeworks engraved with my girlfriend's nicknamed "Cheddar". She uses the crap out of it. Got it for her for Valentine's day, and yes she loved it.
