Kukri in 3V, K890, or CruWear

This may very well be what I end up doing unless a maker wants to do something custom. Looks like I can get one for around $400-450 shipped. But then I’ve got to deal with that handle…
I’ve got one of those Cold Steel kukris in 3v and it is an amazing blade. The handle is fine also. Cold Steel has a track record of their rubber handles being beat on for decades and holding up great. Some people claim their handles have loosened up over time but that’s a small number of cases. Beat the hell out of that Kukri and if the handle eventually loosens up, then go the custom handle route. I bet you never get to that point. Oh, and the sheath is excellent too. I got mine for $400. An amazing value

I just ended up picking one up brand new from Midway USA in 3V for under $250 yesterday! After all seeing all these comments and not having any luck finding anyone to make it, I decided it’s the best value for me.

I almost bought one as well, but decided I already had too many toys and not enough time.

Incredible score. These were going for over $600 when first released and I remember Cold Steel boss Lynn Thompson lamenting about how expensive and time consuming these were to make when they were first bringing them to market

You will want to edit this post as you can't have a non-supporting shop, product, and price, in a post.

I think if you edit out the price, you should be okay, or simply "I just ended up with a brand new one!"

I just ended up picking one up brand new in 3V for cheap yesterday! I will break the handle eventually and figure out how to have custom canvas micarta scales made for it. After all seeing all these comments and not having any luck finding anyone to make it, I decided it’s the best value for me.

Thank you. I will let you know if I manage to break it.

Another popular one, albeit with "lesser steel" is the Becker BK21. It's well recieved, people like them. Since they are generally 150, sometimes less, they aren't a gamble for testing out to see if a kurkri is what a person really wants?

Please keep us posted, if you continue to like yours/them....

Thanks.

I’ve owned a kukri for 17+ years that I got as a gift from the local army surplus store when my first son was born. It’s my favorite hacking/chopping/fatwood procurement tool. I’ve done probably hundreds of hours of work with it. I love the kukri. This one is my gift to myself for making it through my son’s childhood. It was not easy.

Out of the 3 steels in the title - go with 3V.

Personally - I'd either stick with good old 5160 or would go for 80CrV2.

Wear resistance is not a huge priority in a blade of that size, but if you ever hit something harder with it - you'll likely get some damage regardless of the steel. And 80CrV2 and 5160 are a lot easier to sharpen and take chips/rolls out of than steels you mentioned.

My understanding is that something like 3V is going to be tougher than something like 80crv2 as well. Additionally it should have better corrosion resistance. So since I’ve budgeted for the steel and extra labor, why not?
80crv2 is tougher than 3v especially with lateral strength and I think impact/shock resistance as well

It arrived this morning, and I am quite pleased. Hair shaving sharp the entire length of the blade. Sh

It arrived this morning and does not disappoint. Hair shaving sharp out of the box, with a secondary bevel that is perfectly even the entire length of the blade on both sides. I appreciate the flat spine for batoning, particularly since it’s a full 5/16” thick and will also be used for splitting wood. The sheath is nice and works very well.
